Sun City is a large resort in the North West Province of . The resort includes four hotels in two of which are five star hotels.

These are the world famous Lost City, Sun City Main Hotel, Sun City Cabanas, Cascades Hotel and the self-catering Sun City Vacation Club.

Facts & Figures 400 000 litres of hot water needed to be heated to 60°C. Three air-to-water heat pump exchangers setups and one water-to- water heat pump exchanger setup were installed.

Need Sun International wanted to reduce its impact on the national grid and work towards Eskom’s aim of reducing demand by 10%. The group also wanted to maintain aesthetics and avoid any noise pollution. Sun International wanted to improve its Heritage® score by participating in an ESCo project.

Solution alt.enerPro designed a solution that is unique to Southern Africa. A Teal and Green Trading (Pty) LTD - South Africa water-to-water Heat Pump system including the plant room and Mail: [email protected] piping for the Lost City Palace was installed. Web: www.solahart.co.za The water-to-water heat exchanger helps to heat the 120 000 litres of 60°C water that the Lost City Palace requires per day. Three air-to-water heat exchangers heats the 120 000, 60 000 and 100 000 litres of hot water for the Sun City Main Hotel, Cascades Hotel and Cabanas hotel respectively. There are several large swimming pools on the property, three of which are electrically heated. Facts & Figures 2x water to water Pool Heat Pump exchanger systems and one air to water exchanger system was installed to heat the 1,2 million litre Lost City Palace swimming pool, 900 000 litre Cascades Hotel swimming pool and the 273 000 litre Sun City Vacation Club swimming pool.

Solution

Selected Energy designed a unique water to water heating solution for the Lost City Palace and Cascades Hotel swimming pools. Teal and Green Trading (Pty) LTD - South Africa Mail: [email protected] The solution draws water from the lakes and cold water pools on the property and extracts heat which is used to augment the immersion Web: www.solahart.co.za elements and maintain the swimming pool water temperature at 28°C. Due to its distance from a large enough water source and the location of the Pool Plant room, Selected Energy designed an air-to-water heat exchanger solution for the Sun City Vacation Club swimming pool.

The combined demand saving, which was partly funded by Eskom through its ESCo Model, was 720 kW. Commercial Solar Thermal Case study Sun City –Staff Village

Sun City is a large resort in the North West Province of South Africa. The majority of the resort’s staff is housed on-site in specially designed accommodation. The accommodation units range from 1-4 bedrooms. alt.enerPro undertook a benchmarking project on a small section of the staff village.

Facts and figures alt.enerPro redesigned and decentralised the boiler/ring main system and installed 14 Solahart 302KF systems. On site, real- time data logging and monitoring systems have been installed.

Solution alt.enerPro redesigned the hot water delivery system and reduced energy consumption by 77% from 7,19kWh/100 litres to 1,62 kWh/100 litres for 44 staff units.

Added to this alt.enerPro also managed to reduce the electricity supply to the staff village by 66%. Commercial Solar Thermal Case study Sun City –Vacation Club

Vacation club is a collection of 148 self-catering units, which have Recently been renovated, on the Sun City’s resort site and are Operated by RCI. The units sleep 4-6 people. Two units share all and are Distributed as 74 standalonesemi-detached buildings.

Solution alt.enerPro replaced the existing 250 litre electrical geysers with 148 Solahart 302 J systems fitted with Colorbond skins.

This solution not only resulted in energy savings for the resort but also managed saving of up to 425 tons of CO2 emissions per year. This makes the resort more sustainable and reduces its carbon footprint.
