BIO DOYLE BRAMHALL It’s apropos that DOYLE BRAMHALL’s new Yep Roc CD is titled Is It News because, although they’re absolutely true to his deep roots in the blues, its dozen original tunes mark a turning point that is both ambitious and the logical summation of his artistic evolution. The answer to the forward- thinking, envelope-pushing CD’s title is a resounding yes—and the news is all good! “I wanted to make an all-original record that was big, energetic, intimate, and unpredictable,” Doyle states. “We got a lot of the sounds by pushing everything to the limit and then pulling it back from there.” Fans already accustomed to Doyle’s high standards and willingness to chart new territory will nonetheless be pleased and surprised at just how high he raises the bar. This instant classic is the benchmark of Bramhall’s storied career—which is saying a lot! Continuing the tradition he started with the songs he co-wrote with Stevie Ray Vaughan, which struck a chord with the biggest audience the blues has ever enjoyed, he deftly expands the idiom’s vocabulary and texture. Any discussion of Texas blues, be it T-Bone Walker or Stevie Ray, is incomplete without mention of Doyle Bramhall. As singer, songwriter, and drummer, he has been an integral part of that rich state’s music for almost 40 years and, indeed, one of the founding fathers of the blues/roots resurgence synonymous with the Lone Star state and the migration from Dallas to its musical epicenter, Austin. -

He was most often ahead of the game with regards to deadlines in the process and wanted to make sure he 'got it right'. We had many impromptu meetings or discussions beyond those that were scheduled. He was cautioned to keep it about music and not sociology which he succeed in doing even in the draft. One of the issues we discussed after the draft however was the lack of evidence for his claim of the Blues genre being about breaking rules. I advised him to find a stronger tack and, although he kept some aspects of the former he was able to identify and back up SRV's unique voice and contribution in other ways. Ultimately I feel that this should have been pursued further, with perhaps fewer analyses of songs. seemed a tiny bit reluctant to let go of what he had done. I do know that before the final he had much to cut to keep the size manageable so I presume he delivered the best he had. However, this is why I awarded less on his reasoned argument and why an otherwise excellent undertaking does not score full points on holistic. HAD STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN NOT SUDDENLY SURFACED in the early 1980s, guitar in hand and a nearly uncontrollable urge to play it, then the blues might have willed him into existence. These, after all, weren’t the best times for the blues, which had been the bedrock of all American music for nearly a century. ^ MTV was making pop mu sic more physical and visual: Think Michael Jackson and Madonna. Most of mainstream rock was all about big sound, arena shows, and elaborate stage sets. And new wave, though it rebelled against rock’s more ornate sounds and superstar mindset, was as style-conscious as it was interested in a simpler approach to making records. ’I The blues connected to none of this. The 1960s had been the music’s last golden age, a time when masters like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and B. B. King played to eager young rock audiences fascinated by its emotional power, and guitar kingpins like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Carlos Santana, and Mike Bloomfield - a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - collectively created a new hybrid: blues rock. P® From blues rock came heavy metal and the likes of Led Zeppelin. But in the 1970s, rock also became increasingly diversified, with other new sounds and styles run ning rampant.
