South Africa's Defence Industry: A Template for Middle Powers? 1 Greg Mills and Martin Edmonds Introduction The South African arms industry employs today around half of its peak of 120,000 in the 1980s. A number of major South African defence producers have been bought out by Western-based companies, while a pending priva tisation process could see the sale of the 'Big Five'2 of the South African industry. This much might be expected of a sector that has its contemporary origins in the apartheid period of enforced isolation and self-sufficiency. -

As I am not a member of History and Heritage Branch-Air Force, all Air Force history or heritage queries should be directed, in the first instance, to [email protected] n this day, the Australian Air Corps (AAC) – O a temporary Army unit raised 15 months earlier – was disbanded and replaced by the Australian Air Force (AAF) as a separate service. Although the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) was disbanded after WW I ended in 1918, Australia was committed to retaining a military air service. Britain had gifted 128 surplus aircraft to Australia to establish an air force, and some of these planes - along with training machines already at Point Cook - were operated by an interim army unit, the Australian Air Corps, during 1920-21. The AAF immediately took possession of existing aircraft and equipment at Point Cook, Victoria, but not all the AAC’s personnel were transferred across. At its formation the new Service had 21 officers and 128 other ranks, and even six months later this strength had barely doubled. The 153 aircraft which initially came into the AAF’s possession were mainly war surplus machines received under an ‘Imperial Gift’ arrangement. -

Signature:…………………….. Date:………………………….. iii ABSTRACT The use of military force to suppress internal unrest has been an integral part of South African history. The European colonisation of South Africa from 1652 was facilitated by the use of force. Boer commandos and British military regiments and volunteer units enforced the peace in outlying areas and fought against the indigenous population as did other colonial powers such as France in North Africa and Germany in German South West Africa, to name but a few. The period 1912 to 1945 is no exception, but with the difference that military force was used to suppress uprisings of white citizens as well. White industrial workers experienced this military suppression in 1907, 1913, 1914 and 1922 when they went on strike. Job insecurity and wages were the main causes of the strikes and militant actions from the strikers forced the government to use military force when the police failed to maintain law and order. -

Providing for the Royal Australian Air Force in the Defence of Australia 1934-1944 Meeting the political and economic challenges in strengthening Australia’s defences Myriam Sarah Geneviève Amar A thesis submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy University of New England, 12 March 2015 1 ABSTRACT This thesis examines Australia’s defence preparedness when Japan threatened its northern shores in 1941-1942. Although according to historian Andrew T. Ross the local industries were producing quantities of ammunition and military equipment at this time, my thesis asks why, when on 19 February 1942 the Japanese launched their air raids on Darwin, defenders were unable to counter the enemy due to a severe lack of machine-gun fire and rifles. In this I draw attention to the massive deficiencies in transport systems, the tyranny of distance and bumpy roads which made delivery of bulk stores to the northern forces a challenge. A positive aspect of this was the emerging need to deploy and sustain forces in northern Australia, which led to a decision to upgrade overland links and infrastructure. While taking a broad view of influences and events relevant to policy development and implementation on Australia’s armed services, my thesis focuses closely on the formation, development and role of the RAAF. I also draw upon the difficulties the Air Board experienced in obtaining suitable aircraft for the RAAF at a time when the British Air Ministry was dealing with its own modernisation problems. Australia’s cooperation with Britain on Imperial defence policy promoted a false sense of security based on the assumption that Britain would remain the dominant power. -

Chapter 10 The SA Air Force: mandate, activities, main equipment and key personalities The SA Air Force (SAAF) is the second-oldest air force in the world. It was founded in 1920 by Sir Pierre van Ryneveld, a pioneer of aviation in South Africa. The world’s oldest air force, the Royal Air Force, was established two years previously, partly at the instigation of General Jan Smuts, then a member of the British War Cabinet. Australia’s Royal Australian Air Force is the third oldest and was also established in 1920. The SAAF is the second-most senior service in the SANDF. What is the mandate of the SAAF? To provide and manage the air defence capability of the Department of Defence on behalf of the DoD, thereby participating in the service to ensure: • The sovereignty and protection of the Republic's territorial integrity. • Compliance with the international obligations of the Republic to international bodies and states. In plainer language, the SAAF exists to defend South Africa’s airspace from unfriendly or unauthorised incursion, to support its sister services and to support government’s foreign and domestic policies. Vision The South African Air Force intends achieving the following ten strategic objectives by 2012: Declaration 1 The SA Air Force is able to maintain an affordable and sustainable balance between the structural elements of air power: Equipment, People, Doctrine – each element developed to its full potential and employed with maximum efficiency. Declaration 2 It can conduct all operations entrusted to it with an exceptional degree of dependability and skill. Declaration 3 It can afford its force design, sustain all required force preparation and force employment, and maintain high standards of aviation safety. -

Wind in the Wires Welcome to the sixth quarterly newsletter from Cross & Cockade International, bringing you all that's new and interesting in the world of WW1 aviation. Doesn't time fly - it's now eighteen months since our first! The autumn edition of the journal landed on my mat this morning. Everyone in the UK should receive theirs over the next few days. If you're overseas and subscribed via airmail, you'll probably get yours next week. If you live outside Europe and subscribe surface mail, I'm afraid you may have a much longer wait - and might want to consider subscribing airmail for 2014. The postal services are positively discouraging surface post - in the US and Australia delivery can up to an extra 10 weeks. As usual we have a fine selection of articles for your delectation - on a wide variety of subjects. First up is a fascinating piece by Michael Kelsey on 47 Sqn's use of the "Little Ack" in Macedonia. Staying with the Macedonian theme, we also have a great piece by Boris Ciglic titled "Premier Serbian Fighters", on the use of French fighters with Serb forces in WW1. We have the second article on Guy Duncan Smith, plus one on his brother, Harold Beaumont Smith. We also have the continuation of Mick Davis' excellent series "Gazetteer of UK Flying Sites" (which gets to Pett) and Paul Leaman's "Atlas of German & Foreign Seaplanes", which reaches Zeppelin-Staaken. -

ISBN 978-1-55753-940-3. In 1967 the reviewer was fortunate to be selected to travel to New Zealand for a Rotary-sponsored study tour. (Photo: By courtesy. SA National Museum of Military History) Above: What was probably the first air attack in Africa took place in 1914, not long after the outbreak of the First World War. The attacker (and photographer) was a lone German piloting a small aircraft. The attacked were troops of the Transvaal Scottish, the Imperial Light Horse, the Pretoria Regiment and the Kaffrarian Rifles. They were camped in the hot South West African (now Namibian) desert at Tschaukaib, near Aus. The German South West African and East African campaigns, 1914-1916 Periodically, the Germans flew over the South African regiments and dropped Howitzer shells, each with a strip of torn sheeting attached to it with thin wire, to ensure that the shell landed nose first and exploded on target. A monkey unwittingly became the first African air raid siren. The monkey, a mascot of one regiment. would hear the aircraft long before any human ears picked up the sound and give warning by squealing and chattering excitedly. 'It was the first time I ever saw an air attack', Tommy Thompson told me. Tommy (Major C R Thompson, DFC) is one of South Africa's pioneer aviators. It's a far cry from the jumbo jets of today back down the years to the goggles and oil-spattered overalls of those pilots who learned to fly, not on beams or beacons or radio fixes, but by the seat of their pants. -

Airpower in the Union of South Africa's First World War Campaign In
Historia 62, 2, November 2017, pp 1-26 Airpower in the Union of South Africa’s First World War campaign in German South West Africa Antonio Garcia* Abstract During the Great War, aircraft were used primarily for reconnaissance and artillery spotting. The Union of South Africa’s First World War campaign in German South West Africa (GSWA) allowed for South Africa’s first employment of military aeroplanes in conventional warfare. The creation and employment of the South African Aviation Corps (SAAC) within the Union Defence Force (UDF) provided ground forces with a substantial force multiplier in terms of forward reconnaissance. The aerial reconnaissance allowed General Louis Botha and his subordinate commanders to gain a better understanding of the tactical picture and facilitated the battle concept. This paper discusses the role and impact of aerial operations during the GSWA campaign. The campaign was characterised by sweeping envelopments which were executed by the Union’s commandos. During the latter part of the campaign aeroplanes provided the UDF with intelligence in terms of the location and concentration of German forces, which assisted in their final encirclement. Die eerste keer wat die Unie van Suid-Afrika militêre vliegtuie aangewend het in ʼn konvensionele rol, was tydens die veldtog in Duits Suidwes-Afrika (DSWA). Die stigting en operasionele aanwending van die Suid-Afrikaanse Vliegkorps, as deel van die Unieverdedigingsmag (UVM), het die magstruktuur en aanwending van die Suid-Afrikaanse troepe ter velde positief beïnvloed, veral in terme van die vergroting van die operasionele verkenningsektor.
