REPORT ON THE STUDENTS’ RALLY AGAINST WOMEN ABUSE HELD ON 07.09.2014

The Rotaract Club of Thiagarajar College organised a students’ rally against women abuse on 07.09.2014. The rally was flagged off from the entrance of the college and went through the streets of Anna Nagar and Teppakulam area near the college campus. The stretch of the rally was about 4 kms during which the students carried signboards, placards and slogan shouting against women abuse. About 250 students participated in the rally which was organised by Dr.S.Rajakarthihan, Staff Coordinator, Rotaract Club, Thiagarajar College and Rotaractors of the college.

The RotaractClub,ThiagarajarCollege organized an ―Road Safety Awareness Rally‖ on11thJanuary 2015, In this rally, around 90rotaractors participated, each wearing a helmet and rode their motorvehicles from our college and went around the lanes of Teppakulam area. The pillion riderscarriedsignboards with messages about road safety. The rally stopped at main junctions where slogans about road safety measures were shouted to capture the attention of the public. The main focus of the programme ws to create an awareness about the methods and measures that should be adopted to prevent injuries and accidents on roads. The programme was well received by the public and had a good impact in the neighbourhood of the college.

REPORT ON THE 11TH ANNUAL TRAINING PROGRAMME ON SAIVA SIDDHANTA HELD FROM 21.11.2014 TO 30.11.2014

The 13th Annual Training Programme on SaivaSiddhanta was held at Thiagarjar College for 10 days from 21.11.2015 to 30.11.2015. Financial support for the programme, conducted every year during November for 10 days, is provided by the Management of the college. The programme starts with a formal inauguration on the first day and ends with a formal valediction on the final day in which the Manage. Classes on SaivaSiddanta are conducted every day from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. according to a prescribed time table. Training on recital of hymns from Saiva literature is taught by eminent recitalist Thiru.RathnasabapathiAiyya of Arulmigu Sri MeenakshiSundareswarar Temple. Classes will be handled by experts at the free residential programme at two levels — general and advanced. Resource persons include eminent SaivaSiddhanta scholars such as SiddhantaVidyanidhiThiruK.Shanmugam, ThiruA.Anandarajan and Dr.M.Arunagiri, former Principal and Head of the Department of Tamil, Thiagarajar College. Those who have already participated in the general level course are eligible to move to the advanced level. Certificates will be distributed to participants on completion of the course. Dr.M.Eyini, Principal, delivered the vote of thanks. 120 participants including those from Sri Lanka, Maylasia and Australia benefitted from the programme.

REPORT ON THE ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA) PROGRAMME ORGANISED JOINTLY WITH CESCI FROM 29.12.2014 TO 31.12.2014

The Rotaract Club of Thiagarajar organised a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards programme jointly with the Central European Services for Cross-border Initiatives (CESCI), Madurai, from 29.12.2014 to 31.12.2014. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where young people can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections. CESCI's primary function is hosting training for the activists and providing an environment in which they can recharge their energies after a spell in the field. About 65rotaractors from our college participated in the above programme and benefitted.

REPORT ON THE PULSE POLIO CAMP HELD ON 18-01-2015 AT ANGANWADI CENTRE, KADACHANENDAL VILLAGE NEAR MADURAI

The Rotaract club ThigarajarCollege organized a camp on ―Pulse Polio‖ on 18th January 2015. This camp was organised at the anganwadi centre of Kadachanenthal, Madurai. Pulse polio is an immunisation campaign established by the Government of to eliminate poliomyelitis (polio) in India by vaccinating all children under the age of five years against the polio virus. In this camp around75 children were vaccinated. The parents were well informed about the importance of pulse polio through mass media and other advertisements. The pulse polio drug was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs at free of cost. In this event around 125 rotaractors and the staff co-coordinator Dr.S.Rajakarthihanparticipated.

REPORT ON BLOOD DONATION CAMP HELD ON 21.01.2015

The Rotaract Club, ThigarajarCollege, organized a ―Blood Donation Camp‖in the college premises on21stJanuary 2015 in association with Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. The camp was organised since there was a need to meet emergency situations due to threat of Dengue fever which prevailed across the city. In this blood donation camp around 130 units of blood were donated by the students of ThiagarajarCollege.The students who donated blood underwent anecessary medical procedure to assess their fitness to donate blood. The Doctors and support staff members of Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, expressed their gratitude to the Management, Principal, Staff and Students for the overwhelming participation from students at a very crucial juncture when the hospital needed blood units to tackle threat due to dengue fever.

TREKKING & ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANLINESS CAMP UNDER SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN PROGRAMME

The National Cadet Corps, the largest uniformed organization of the country always takes lead to promote National Policies. In the paddle, now NCC has taken up Prime Minister’s ―Swachh Bharat Abhiyan‖ Programme. The NCC Army Wing of Thiagarajar College, Madurai as per the directions of Col K N Prasad, the Officer Commanding, 7 Tamilnadu Battalion has initiated and carried out cleaning process. In continuation, on 10th and 11th March 2015, a team 63 cadets moved to located near Watrap, . This hill comes under Grizzled Squirrel Wild Life Sanctuary established in 1988 to protect the giant squirrel. The hill is a prominent pilgrimage with two Shiva temples, SundaraMahalingam and SanthanaMahalingam at an elevation of 2500 masl and about 7 Km of distance with steep elevations here and there. A large number of devotees gather at the temples during no moon days, full moon days and on the days of importance of Lord Shiva. Every day pooja is being conducted and the devotees are fed and sheltered by the Maths situated at top hills.

Being a sanctuary and a well-known pilgrimage centre, Sathuragiri Hills attracts visitors throughout the year. Despite specific instructions from the Department of Forestry and temple authorities a large quantum of plastic bottles and polythene are thrown by the visitors. This poses serious threat to the wild animals and declines the health of the streams and terrestrial ecosystem. As Clean India along with Green India is the need of the hour, an environmental trekking camp was organized. The cadets reached the foothills at 1230 hrs. After lunch and brief rest, they started climbing up by around 1530 hrs and reached top hills by around 1830 hrs. The cadets stayed in one of Maths in the night. The next morning after breakfast, the team started moving to down hills. While getting down plastic bottles, polythene bags and other non degradable materials were picked up in gunny sacks and brought to foothills. The collected materials were handed over to Forest Department for mass disposal by the Department. The conservationist Dr Parthiban, and Forester Mr.Sivalingam motivated and appreciated the cadets for their service. The Cadets and the ANO thanked Dr. T. Rajasekar, Principal, Thiagarajar College and University Grants Commission for providing permission and travel assistance to undertake trekking expedition.

The NCC Army Wing and NCC Alumni Association of Thiagarajar College, Madurai has joined in hand with Prime Minister’s ―Swachh Bharat Abhiyan‖ Programme. A one day camp was organized at the Residential School for Dropout Children in Konthagai Village. The home houses about 27 abandoned children of both the sex up to the age of 14.

Mr. R. Theriappan, Ex-NCC Cadet (1979 – 1982) of the college inaugurated the camp. Mr. S. Arunagiri, Ex-cadet, a resident of the village made all the local arrangements.

The cadets including alumni cadets of different batches removed the debris and cleaned the campus. They have laid down underground pipeline for water supply. A thatched bathroom was built for the benefit the inmates especially girl children. Firewood stacking was rearranged. The foreground of the home was cleaned and its uneven broken surface was restructured. The home was fenced with thatches and gates made of wooden sticks were installed. Saplings were planted.

Hair dressing was made to a few children. The books in the school were categorized and placed in order. The children were provided with tooth brush, tooth paste and soaps for maintaining their health and hygiene.

The cadets have demonstrated high level Shramdan with true spirit and the programmed rejuvenated the service mindedness of the cadets.

 The students of Thiagarajar College also interestedly volunteer themselves in lifesaving deeds and acts.  The people who are in need will send for blood donors through various hospitals.  The students whose blood group matches with the needed blood group will be sent to the respective hospitals with the permission of the Principal and blood donor officer.  The students of Thiagarajar College are always ready for helping others and render their great service without any further delay.  This kind of blood donation is happening all through the year whenever there is a request letter from different hospitals.  Thus the students are always in readiness to run errands during the time of emergency to save the lives of unknown people.  Request Letters from Hospitals / Patients are filed in Blood Donors file.
