I have been involved with the Lions for 10 years and assisted with marshalling Queensway to the Ridge throughout that time. I am full of admiration for everyone who takes part in the Half Marathon and the Mini Run, the commitment, dedication and effort to complete the course is amazing. The Lions club of Hastings can donate to so many local worthy causes because of your generosity and offer help both nationally and Internationally in times of real need. Last year the Lions Club of Hastings donated £23,764.00 to local deserving causes Including donations to the floods appeal in both Doncaster and Japan. This event would not be possible without the continued support of all our Sponsors, Hastings Borough Council, Area Marshals, Stewards, Computer operators, the scouts and many other unpaid volunteers and our grateful thanks goes out to them all. Finally, I wish all participants the very best of luck and hope you achieve whatever goal you have set for yourselves. To all the marshals a very big thank you. To all spectators I hope the weather makes for an enjoyable time and please cheer on all the runners. Peter Jackson President – Lions Club of Hastings The Local Hastings Lions meet at 8pm every 2nd Tuesday at the White Rock Hotel and most 4th Tuesday’s for a social meal in a local establishment. I know that it is one of the most popular events of its type, and I must again thank Eric Hardwick and his dedicated band of Lions Club colleagues for the tremendous job they do every year. We like to think of ourselves as 'famously Hastings', and so it is quite appropriate that one of the most famous, and popular, half marathons takes place here. It never ceases to amaze me how many dedicated entrants and supporters we have, from re-entering each year, to marshalling the same position for 36 years! This is what give ‘Hastings Half’ its heart and knowing that ALL monies raised from the event go to needy causes. Eric, Val and Princess Anne The event has changed over the years, from when we had the Top British and International Athletes competing at Hastings, to the situation now that so many commercial events pay such big money for Athletes that we cannot as a Charity Event compete with them. We have never paid appearance money, and try to see as much money go to those in need. The Prize Money at Hastings is sponsored by Hastings Direct, for which we are most grateful and therefore enables the maximum monies to go to Charity.

I must confess I know little or nothing about football itself, though I do stand on the touch line and support very enthusiastically. However, what I do know is that there are many young boys and girls that have a talent in this field and I want to be able to help them reach their goals. I will give them every opportunity I can to ensure that they get the very best so that they can do the very best. Not everyone will go on to play football professionally, they may reach National or County standard or end up playing for their University, their future employer’s team or just in a friendly Sunday league. Whichever pathway they take I want to be able to ensure that we give them that opportunity so that they have an outlet that will help them to have that feeling of achievement and fulfilment. Facilities are of course important and every parent looks for the quality of the astro turf (and Buckswood is well equipped for good sport tuition), but more importantly I believe is “esprit de corps”. All teenagers must have strong mentors to guide them and encourage them to be the best and our football coaches and support staff do just that, both inside the classroom and on the field, and it works.

The Buckswood way is very much about family. When you come to the school, you are visiting a home, campus and country estate. You will find a warm, loving family atmosphere in which our students excel in their academic studies. They are supported throughout their development by passionate mentors whose purpose is to inspire their charges, ignite a spark of curiosity and guide them to fulfil their learning potential, using all the facilities, tips and tricks that we have developed over many years. Our passion for creating this haven of learning is rooted in the conviction that every child needs to build confidence and self-belief. It really has to be seen to be believed, but by creating this book I hope to transmit some of the genial Buckswood atmosphere that resonates around the campus and breathes the curiosity to learn into every student. Whether it be myself, the teachers, ICT technicians, cooks, cleaners, gardeners and of course the students, everyone is a valued member of the Buckswood family, a family that extends beyond these walls and spreads across decades and every continent. Buckswood is about achievement, success, and winning.

SURREY COUNTY ATHLETIC NEWS (Issue 54 - February 2008) FROM OUR PRESIDENT It has been a great honour to be Surrey County President for the past year which closes at this years AGM on 14th March. During the year Surrey County athletes & teams have achieved great success in all facets of the sport : track & field, cross country, road running, sportshall & walking. Many thanks to all the athletes who have competed for the County in the past year, those I have met & seen have competed with great enthusiasm & shown there is a huge wealth of talent in the County. I’d also like to thank all the coaches & parents for their help & support especially in ensuring the athletes are so well prepared & assisting them to get to County matches. I hope representing the County has assisted athletes development & for many may be the stepping stone to National success. We are indebted to our team managers who have organised teams & assisted the athletes to enjoy representing the County. I’ve tried to get to most County championships during the year & can only praise the efficiency of our officials. We are very lucky in the County to have so many officials prepared to voluntarily give up their time to enable competitions to take place in all conditions & it is reassuring that we have a large number of new officials taking courses. However we always need more so please contact Michael & Patricia Cole for details of officials courses. I’ve been to the County committee meetings & there is a lot of hard work that goes onto putting on championships & arranging teams with a lot of pre-planning to make sure the day / event goes smoothly.
