Finally, I want to thank Drew, who spent way too much time as my second pair of eyes and emotional support. iii ABSTRACT This thesis argues that A Discourse of the Damned Art of Witchcraft by William Perkins, a prestigious Puritan theologian in Elizabethan England, highlights several themes in his witchcraft discourse which reflect his larger theology and more general trends in English theology: a world with an active Devil, predestination, providence, Biblicism, and anti-Catholicism. These central themes shape his understandings of where witchcraft fits within a world where God dominates everything. Witchcraft is an attempt to steal the dominion from God, even though the Devil only tricks witches into thinking they have power. He also tricks them into thinking he has power, since God grants him his ability over humanity. Perkins’ described witchcraft practices mirror this understanding and are circumvented by godly opportunities for Christians to avoid witchcraft. In thus painting witchcraft, Perkins demonstrates a culture he sees as far too permissive of magic in academic settings, popular culture, and Catholicism. Framed and Delivered by M. William Perkins is probably not the first document that comes to one’s head when talking about witchcraft treatises. 1 It is most often overshadowed by bigger names, such as the James I’s Daemonologie. Even in terms of English witchcraft it is often lumped in with general discussions of theology Elizabethan England. 256 pages long, it deals mostly with analyzing the dangers of witches to society, placing witches within a larger religious cosmology, and advising Christians on how to deal with witches. The argument of this thesis is not necessarily that Perkins’ discourse is atypical or incredibly influential in its own right. Though this document circulated widely in England and the continent of Europe, there is very little direct evidence that it increased accusations or shaped the way witchcraft trials were run. 2 The center of this thesis actually hinges on placing this Discourse as a central means of understanding Perkins’ personal theology and larger societal trends. 1 W. Kent Cartwright (Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell, 2010), 40. 1 William Perkins was born in 1558 as lower gentry and was educated at Cambridge where he received as far as an MA. He then worked as a lecturer at St. Andrew’s Church and was a Fellow at Cambridge. He was tutored by Lawrence Chaderton and remained a central theological figure in the moderate Puritan movements of the late 1500s. He is even credited for teaching figures such as William Ames and Robert Cotton. 3 Perkins had a practical Puritan theology, focusing on how Reformation religious values, such as predestination, worked practically for the believers. 4 He sees the importance of Perkins in the proliferation of his work. He notes that Perkins published forty-eight books, twenty-one during his life. Many of these books made their way over to the New World, and many more were translated into the vernacular languages of many different countries. 5 Perkins was a key figure in the early development of Puritan belief through his practical theology and influence as a teacher and writer. Through the Discourse , Perkins contributes to a growing genre of pamphlets and treatises in England regarding witchcraft. Pamphlets and treatises on the witch trials proved a popular and profitable subject for printers and writers at the time, providing an often-salacious subject for readers. Starting in 1566, most witch trials were passed to the public as accounts of the events of the trials with varying levels of accuracy. These pamphlets encouraged the production of lengthier treatises, such as that of Perkins. The first major treatise in a long line of English treatises by theologians in communication with English and European witchcraft beliefs was Henry Holland’s Treatise against 3 William Perkins et al., A Commentary on Galatians (New York: Pilgrim Press, 1989), viii–ix. 4 Patterson, William Perkins and the Making of a Protestant England , 216–17. 5 Patterson, William Perkins and the Making of a Protestant England , 190–91. 2 witchcraft from 1590. 6 Others soon followed: James Mason’s The Anatomie of Sorcerie (1612), Thomas Cooper’s Mystery of Witchcraft (1617), John Cotta’s The Trial of Witch- craft (1616) , and Richard Bernard’s Guide to Grande Jury Men (1627). 7 In compiling these larger works, authors relied on trial records, smaller pamphlets, and other treatises; in each case their information was distanced from the witch herself. Whether it is reading the witchcraft pamphlets or treatises, one cannot ignore that these documents are created documents. Marion Gibson breaks down this belief best in his Reading Witchcraft: Stories of early English witches . The information included, the subjects focused on, and way the author talks about witchcraft are all shaped by what the author and what they want to achieve, where he attempts to read past the flaws in these documents to understand the information beneath. 8 Reading Perkins’ treatise as a created document will help illustrate its importance to historical understandings. This thesis will argue that the importance of Perkins’ treatise is not in an abundance of unique contributions, but in how many different elements of theology and social criticism come together in this work. Perkins sees his world as battleground between the God and Satan, where Satan’s abilities are granted by an omnipotent God to punish sinners. These beliefs display an emerging understanding of predestination and providence

The English Separatist movement provided the background for which John Smyth and Thomas Helwys emerged to reconstitute a biblical ecclesiology. Through the study of the New Testament, they came to the position that infant baptism and covenantal theology could not be the foundation for the New Testament church. Both men embraced believer ’s baptism as the basic foundation in which a recovered church should be built. Unfortunately, Smyth defected to the Mennonites, leaving Thomas Helwys to continue the fledging work known as Baptists. This article will examine the life of Thomas Helwys and his contribution to Baptist ecclesiology; it will also review selected literary works that contributed to the recovery of a New Testament church and the founding of Baptist ecclesiology. KEY WORDS: English Separatism, Puritanism, Baptist, Thomas Helwys, church Introduction Thomas Helwys was the primary leader of the General Baptist Church movement after John Smyth defected to the Mennonites. After investigating into matters of ecclesiology, Smyth sought a true church that had roots back to the apostolic church. Smyth became convinced that there was a true church in existence once he began a dialogue with the Mennonites in Am- sterdam. Reviewing Smyth ’s investigation into the Mennonites doctrine, Walter Burgess states: As there was a true Church in existence at the time when he arrived at a convic- tion of the truth, Smyth concluded that he and his company had acted ‘disorder- ly ’ in assuming baptism for themselves.

    Arminius: a grand divide in theology Reconsidering Arminius The theology of Dutch theologian Jacob Arminius has been misinterpreted and carica- tured in both Reformed and Wesleyan circles. But by revisiting Arminius’s theology, this book hopes to be a constructive voice in the discourse between so-called Calvinists and Arminians. Traditionally, Arminius has been treated as a divisive figure in evangelical theology. In- deed, one might be able to describe classic evangelical theology up into the twentieth century in relation to his work: one was either an Arminian and accepted his theology, or one was a Calvinist and rejected his theology. Although various other movements within evangelicalism have provided additional contour to the movement (fundamentalism, Pentecostalism, and so on), the Calvinist-Arminian “divide” remains a significant one. What this book seeks to correct is the misinterpretation of Arminius as one whose theol- Reconsidering ogy provides a stark contrast to the Reformed tradition as a whole. Indeed, this book will demonstrate instead that Arminius is far more in line with Reformed orthodoxy than popularly believed and will show that what emerges as Arminianism in the theology of Arminius the Remonstrants and Wesleyan movements was in fact not the theology of Arminius but a development of and sometimes departure from it. This book also brings Arminius into conversation with modern theology. To this end, it includes essays on the relationship between Arminius’s theology and open theism and Neo-Reformed theology. In this way, this book fulfills the promise of the title by showing ways in which Arminius’s theology— once properly understood—can serve as a resource for evangelical Wesleyans and Calvinists doing theology together today.

    ABSTRACT One Christian’s Plea: The Life, Ministry, and Controversies of Francis Johnson Kenneth Scott Culpepper Mentor: William H. Brackney, Ph.D. Francis Johnson (1562-1618) served as pastor of the English Separatist congregation that became known as the “Ancient Church” from 1592 until his death in 1618. The congregation was first gathered in London under the guidance of Henry Barrow and John Greenwood before its members fled to Amsterdam in 1593 under Johnson’s leadership to escape persecution by English civil and ecclesiastical authorities. Johnson joined his flock in 1597 after being released from prison. His ministry was filled with strife and conflict as he sought to implement the Separatist ecclesiological ideal of a congregational polity. Despite the turbulence of his early years in Amsterdam, Johnson’s Ancient Church finally enjoyed a period of relative peace and growth from 1604-1608. Johnson caused a split within his own congregation in 1610. This fissure was created by his determination to pursue a more congregational rather than presbyterian polity in response to external conflicts with his former Cambridge pupil, John Smyth. After a self- imposed period of exile from 1613-1617 at Emden, East Friesland, Johnson returned to Amsterdam in 1617 to publish his final polemical work. He died at Amsterdam in 1618. In this research project, the author explored the evolving theological views, career, social context, polemical exhanges, controversies, and writings of Francis Johnson with two primary objectives. The first of these objectives was to analyze the course of Francis Johnson’s ecclesiological views as he transitioned from an early presbyterian position to congregationalism and back to presbyterianism before he finally came to moderate his original hard-line Separatism.

    Richard Bernard and his book on conscience Richard Bernard is one of the lesser known Puritan pastors and writers. Not counted worthy of a place in Joel Beeke's Meet the Puritans he is referenced in the newer Puritan Theology and is included in Benjamin Brook's 19th century three volume work The lives of the Puritans. What I want to do today is to say a little bit about Bernard, something about writing on conscience and then try to summarise Bernard's book on conscience. 1. Richard Bernard Bernard lived 1568-1641 in the reigns of Elizabeth, James and Charles. He was a contemporary of Puritans such as Dod (1555-1645), Perkins (1558-1633), Ames (1576-1633) and Sibbes (1577- 1635). This was an extraordinary period of English history when, following the Reformation, there were a number of godly and diligent men in the country, determined to take forward the work of the gospel as it had been rediscovered shortly before on the continent. Bernard produced mostly practical works, works that were eventually superseded by ones from later writers in the same vein. His most influential volume, on the work of the ministry. The Faithfull Shepheard and his practice was a handbook for ministers. His most popular work The Isle of Man was reprinted many times. His Faithfull Shepheard rivalled Baxter’s Reformed Pastor and his Isle of Man may have inspired Bunyan’s Holy War both better known works. In 1865, James Nichol republished Bernard's sermons on the Book of Ruth, Ruth’s Recompense. Richard was the son of John Bernard (1515-92) and his third wife, Anne Wright and was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, the later birthplace of Methodist father John Wesley.
