Class 4- Week 6 Class 4- Week 6 Five daily prayers: Fardh, Sunnah, Wajib & Nafl Fardh: Of the fardh category are the five daily prayers, as well as the Friday prayer (Salat al- Jumu'ah), while the Eid prayers and Witr are of the wajib category. Fard prayers (as with all fardh actions) are further classed as either fardh al-ayn (obligation of the self) and fardh al-kifayah (obligation of sufficiency). Sunnah: A Sunnah prayer is an optional or supererogatory salah (Ritual prayer) that can be performed in addition to the five daily salah. Sunnah prayer (and other sunnah deeds) are Mustahabb (encouraged) -- those who perform them will earn a reward in the afterlife, but there will be no punishment for neglecting them. Wajib: Witr is an Islamic prayer (salat) that is performed at night after Isha (night-time prayer) or before fajr (dawn prayer). According to the Hanafi Fiqh, witr prayer is wajib. The status of wajib is very close to that of fardh. Nafl: nafl prayer or supererogatory prayer is a type of optional Muslim salah (Formal worship). As with sunnah prayer, they are not considered obligatory but are thought to confer extra benefit on the person performing them. An example is the offering of 4 "nafl" (optional but beneficial) rakats before the compulsory dhuhr prayers. According to the following hadith, nafl not only draws one closer to Allah but also helps one attain the better success in the afterworld. The Five daily prayer i.e., Fajr, Dhuhr, 'Asr, Magrhib and 'Isha are obligatory prayers. It is a sin to intentionally skip a Fardh Prayer. If a prayer is missed because of forgetfulness or due to some unavoidable circumstances, then offering the missed Prayer as soon as possible will rectify this mistake. 2. Sunnah The Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, offered extra Raka'at of Prayer in addition to those of Fardh Prayers. These are called Sunnah Prayers. It is considered necessary by all jurists to offer these prayers. The willful neglect of Sunnah Prayers is censurable in the sight of Allah. Following are the Sunnah Prayers: a. Two Rak'at of Sunnah Prayer should be offered before the Fardh Prayer of Fajr. However, if a person joins the congregation without having offered Sunnah due to circumstances beyond his control, he can offer these after the Fardh prayer. b. Four Rak'at of Sunnah Prayer before Fardh and two Rak'at after the Fardh in Dhuhr Prayer. In case one is unable to perform four Rak'at Sunnah before the Fardh in Dhuhr Prayer, one should offer these after the congregational Fardh Prayer. (Note: Followers of Hanfi school of thought offer two Sunnat while some other Muslims offer four Sunnat after Fardh in Dhuhr Prayer.) c. Two Rak'at of Sunnah after the Fardh of Maghrib Prayer. d. Two Rak'at of Sunnah after the Fardh of 'Isha Prayer.

The work attempts to promote intellectual heritages such as the book of Cahaya Suluh, which could at least give us an idea that in a process of setting certain rules or istinbat, there is a need for flexibility. As can be observed from the whole argument built in this book, the process is completely flexible, not merely following one school of thought. As indicated in this paper, especially in the discussion of his thought, Muhammad Basiuni Im- ran used various references for his propositions. Although he was an advocate of the school of Syafi’i, he was still open to the other schools of thought. As a matter of fact, in the case of Friday prayer, his position was different from the school of thought he supported. He took that position because he considered the socio cultural conditions of Sambas at the time. Intellectual spirit shown by the Grand Imam of Sambas should continue to be emulated and expanded. It is a way to avoid the ‘blind’ taqlid against a certain school of thought, as such attitude can narrow human intelligence and reasoning which will eventually lead to collision with local reality that sometimes contains values that do not contradict with religion.
