BOW REHAIRING Offered twice: June 18-22 and June 25-29 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1-4 pm Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm | Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 Instructor: Lynn Hannings; Teaching Assistant: Amanda Kapousouz The most frequent repair needed by string players is the rehairing of the bow. Learning this essential skill will benefit the student who is interested in building a shop of their own or who wish to develop skills that will make them valuable to an existing professional shop. Shop owners can send employees for refinement of skills or send beginners to develop these skills that are so important to the success of all violin shops. This workshop consists of a week of intensive study. Ample time will be allotted for hands-on experience, questions and practice on multiple bows. A solid foundation in rehairing will greatly enhance the students experience before continuing studies in bow repair and bow making classes. Materials and Tools You will need a number of student-level bows that only need rehairing. A complete list of tools and supplies may be found at: www. lahbows.com. If you have any questions about preparation for this workshop, please contact Lynn Hannings at lynnh@lahbows. com.

BOW REPAIR I July 2-6 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1-4 pm | Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 Instructor: Lynn Hannings; Teaching Assistant: Amanda Kapousouz Rather than replacing a bow that needs repair, fix it! This workshop will cover routine repairs that will keep bows in good working order. Often bows that come in for rehairing also need repair; normal wear and tear from regular use. Since all these repairs can dramatically affect the weight and balance of the bow, it is critically important that bow shop employees understand the aspects of playability and the importance of meeting the physical and musical needs of the musicians entrusting them with their bows. Hands-on instruction will include cambering and straightening of the stick, eyelet replacement, tip replacement, pin repairs and winding/leather grip replacements. This workshop, in addition to the Bow Rehairing course, will best prepare you for meeting the needs of your clients who require bows that are well balanced, draw a good sound on their instruments and are comfortable in the hand, to most successfully make beautiful music and to avoid injury. Materials and Tools You will need a number of student-level bows in need of repair (any condition, several if possible). A complete list of tools and suppliers is available at www.lahbows.com. If you have any questions about preparation for this workshop, you may contact Lynn Hannings at [email protected].

BOW MAKING: WITH A FOCUS ON HISTORICAL PRESERVATION Offered twice: July 9-13 and July 16-20 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1-4 pm Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm | Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 Instructor: Lynn Hannings; Teaching Assistant: Mike Brough This hands-on workshop focuses on the French school of bow making; renowned for their playability as well as artistic beauty. Whether restoring a bow or making a new one, it is helpful to know the time-honored techniques used for centuries in France. Under the direction of the instructor, who knows and respects the French bow making traditions, you will learn techniques that are both practical and fundamental. During Bow Making, you will work on your bows independently with personalized guidance from the instructor. The one-on-one instructional format is designed to maximize your time and talents. You may attend one or two weeks, although two weeks is recommended to finish a stick. All skill levels are welcome. It is helpful but not mandatory to take Bow Rehairing in advance of this class. Materials and Tools A complete list of tools and suppliers may be found at www. lahbows.com. If you have any questions about preparation for this workshop, please contact Lynn Hannings at [email protected].

BOW REPAIR II & TOOL MAKING June 25-29 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1-4 pm Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm | Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 Instructor: George Rubino; Teaching Assistant: Kevin Curry Expand your study of common bow repairs and techniques; essential information for the individual or shop that rehairs or repairs bows. FROG & BUTTON MAKING Offered twice: July 2-6 and July 9-13 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1-4 pm Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm | Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 Instructor: George Rubino; Teaching Assistant: Kevin Curry The unique weight and balance of a handmade frog and button, unlike factory parts, are very important factors in the playability of a bow. A frog and button that compliments the stick will ensure that the finished bow plays as well as possible for the musician. Mr. Rubino will present the process of making a hand-crafted frog and button and the students will learn to make a frog and button for their own bows in progress. For those students learning frog and button making for repair and restoration, the same traditional techniques, including ferrule making, ring making and cheval (rebuilding the frog where it meets the stick), can be used to make or restore a frog for an existing stick. This course is for students of all levels of experience, bow makers and those who may be primarily interested in restoration techniques. It is recommended that students (especially those with limited experience) consider attending both weeks of this course because of the amount of information and the time needed to make both a frog and button. Materials and Tools For a complete list of tools and suppliers go to: training.unh.edu/violin under the “Tools & Materials” tab. If you have any questions about advance preparation for this workshop, contact George Rubino at [email protected].

BOW FINISHING July 16-20 | Monday-Friday: 8-11:30 am and 1–4 pm Evenings: Monday-Thursday 4-5 pm and 7-9 pm Tuition: $1,025 | CEUs: 4.4 | Instructor: George Rubino; Teaching Assistant: Kevin Curry Bow Finishing is for advanced bow making students as well as those who are interested in learning or refining restoration techniques for advanced repairs. Experience in bow making or restoration is required. It is recommended that the students have attended the UNH Violin Craftsmanship Institute bow classes or have equivalent experience. Please contact the instructor if you have questions about your experience level and qualifications for this workshop. For students interested in bow making: Many important decisions when making a bow occur during the finishing process. Final weight, balance, strength and varnishing are critical to the playability and marketability of the finished bow. The students will be required to bring sticks, frogs and buttons that are prepared and ready for final finishing. Mr. Rubino will work with each student individually to guide and advise them on the various options each bow presents. To best evaluate the playability of their bows, students are encouraged to bring an instrument on which to play. For students interested in restoration: Students should bring nearly finished restoration projects to class. Mr. Rubino will work with each student individually with guidance and advice on time-honored finishing techniques, tools, materials, schools and the various options that each bow presents. Restoration projects should be discussed in advance with the instructor for the best use of class time. Materials and Tools A tool list and an outline of how to prepare the bow, frog and button for class will be available upon registration. Bow Finishing Restoration projects will require participants to consult with Mr. Rubino upon registration at [email protected].
