Auckland is paying the most tax so the Govern- ment needs to invest more of it in the country’s biggest city, an MP says. David Seymour has criticised Minister of Transport Simon Bridges for not supporting proposed traffic congestion charging in a Talk Auckland forum in Remuera on August 18. The ACT leader and MP for Epsom also believes the Government should invest more in Auckland’s infrastructure, suggesting GST and tax revenues collected from Auckland construc- tion should be invested back into the city. Seymour called Transport Minister Simon Bridges ‘‘weak’’ for his recent recanting on poten- tial congestion charging. Instead Auckland Coun- cil opted for rates rises to pay for transport projects such as the City Rail Link. Transport and housing were the main themes of the first of two Somervell Presbyterian Church Talk Auckland sessions and the future funding of Auckland’s infrastructure was a key discussion point. The expert panel included Seymour, economist Shamubeel Eaqub, Mission Bay-Kohimarama Residents Association chair Don Stock, and Green Party transport spokesperson . Genter and Eaqub queried where funding for Auckland infrastructure is likely to come from and believe that central government has a role to play in supporting the city’s future growth. There was general agreement, with the excep- tion of Stock, that the Unitary Plan is a positive step forward albeit not perfect. See Deb & Peter’s story at summerset.co.nz Genter believes that Auckland ‘‘has an incred- ible opportunity to be a better city, but that our transport and housing planning in the last 60 years have let us down’’. “Youcanfollowthepassionsyou Villas and apartments However Stock believes an opportunity to move Auckland forward has been missed because had before or discover new ones.” pre selling now* ‘‘the only way to decrease the median house prices in Auckland is to build houses below the current house medium and the Unitary Plan does not sup- DebandPeterhavemadelotsofnewfriendssince SalesOfficeOpen port this’’. moving to Summerset and say the staff work tirelessly The panelists look to having questions about Summerset at Heritage Park Auckland infrastructure development and toensureeveryone’slookedafterandhasagoodtime. funding answered at the Talk Auckland Mayoral 8 Harrison Road, Ellerslie Debate event on August 28. TORIKA TOKALAU-CHANDRA

Mount Albert Grammar have stamped their mark at the top of Auckland School Rugby compe- tition. The school won the First XV 1A title (15-13) in an exhilarating final against Sacred Heart College at Eden Park on Saturday. For a proud sporting school, this ended a six-year drought since last winning the cup in 2010. And while their opponents’ 51-year hunger for the coveted sil- verware was desperate, MAGS’ determination was stronger, even if it took 70 minutes of the game to secure it. MAGS coach Geoff Moon says the intensity of the final shows just how much the competition has grown this year. ‘‘It is really a tough compe- tition and the boys trained really hard, a good 10 months to pre- pare,’’ he says. ‘‘This year has been really exceptional. ‘‘We played 20 games in the competition and we played against an outstanding team in the final.’’ Moon said the final was predictably tough, both teams giv- ing their all and it was anyone’s game for the whole 80 minutes of The team celebrate after the win. ELESHA EDMONDS

A protest against homelessness is heading to Prime Minister ’s neighbourhood. The Park Up For Homes movement is holding its last planned Auckland protest against homelessness and has chosen Parnell as its final destination. The event is expected to attract around 150 people who will park up and sleep in their cars on the night of August 25. Protest organiser Mackenzie Valgre says a draw card for choos- ing Parnell was that the Prime Minister’s house was in the area. ‘‘We are wanting to bring this crisis into reality, take it to his doorstep…not literally of course,’’ she says. The exact location will not be revealed until the morning of the event. The initiative began in Mangere in June which attracted around 1000 people who wanted to show solidarity with those who were facing winter living in a car or garage. Other events have been run throughout Auckland as well as , Wellington, Napier and Hamilton. ‘‘These protests are about showing solidarity with those who are currently facing home- less and rallying the Government to take strong action,’’ Valgre says. ‘‘We hope with Parnell that the Government realises that Kiwis all around New Zealand with dif- ferent socio-economic circum- stances want the Government to do better.’’ National MPs Nick Smith and Phil Twyford are yet to respond to their invitations the Parnell event.
