  • Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury Was a Prolific Wicket
Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury was a prolific wicket-taker in county cricket but struggled in his day job in Tests, taking only 20 wickets at large expense. Wisden claimed the leg-spinner’s googly could be picked because of a higher arm action, which negated the threat he posed. Keith Medlycott, his Surrey coach, felt Salisbury was under-bowled and had his confidence diminished by frequent criticism from people who had little understanding of a leggie’s travails. Yet Ian was a willing performer and an excellent tourist. Salisbury’s Test career was a stop-start affair. Over more than eight years, he played in only 15 Tests. Despite these disappointments Salisbury’s determination was never in doubt. Several times as well, he showed more backbone than his supposedly superior English spin colleagues; most notably in India in early 1993. Ian Salisbury also proved to be an excellent nightwatchman, invariably making useful contributions. His Test innings as nightwatchman are shown below. It’s the time for amateur selection committees Ito convene around every barbecue in the land. The moment for dusting off the Baggy Green, white kit and red Kookaburra. Test match cricket is back. This summer promises to be a special one, as Australia host South Africa and then Sri Lanka in back-to-back three-match Vodafone Test series. It’s a final home dress rehearsal before the Ashes in 2013, but it’s too early for Australia to think about England just yet. They’ve got the world’s top Test side and some wily subcontinental opposition to worry about first. Australia have had a quiet Test schedule following their memorable 4-0 demolition of India last summer. Their only assignment since then came against the West Indies in the Caribbean, where they overcame a resilient home side 2-0. Michael Clarke’s inspired first- innings declaration when 46 runs behind in the rain-affected Barbados opener set up a memorable win for his team, who went on to take another hard-fought victory in the third Test at Roseau.

Members Forum Minutes 1st September 2016 Chairman Introduction and Update The Chairman introduced Members to the panel that consisted of: Daniel Gidney, CEO Anthony Mundy, Operations Director Justin Hopwood, Sales & Marketing Director Amanda Fearn, Chair of the Members’ Representative Group Ashley Giles, Head Coach and Cricket Director The Club is in a good position overall. The commercial areas are doing OK but it has got tougher, there is obviously an element in business of people holding back a little until they find out more about what is going to happen and how the economy is going to run, are interest rates going to change etc. That is very important to us as an awful lot of money that is spent here is personal money and with savings rates not being what we would like them to be that is not helping. Overall we are in decent shape. We had the most phenomenal function in The Point on Saturday night for a leading family in the area, an 80th birthday party and the cabaret was Kylie Minogue and Ronan Keating. The event went absolutely brilliantly. It’s the largest private function since The Point opened. Manchester United are with us again this season so those numbers are up again. As far as cricket is concerned (not here but the way cricket is going) I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions the concern that everybody has with Test Match attendances. The Pakistan Test Match here turned out to be very good but it was a hard sell. Correspondingly the T20 that is coming up next week has had phenomenal attraction and is a sell out and should be a very good game.

  • Test Players Step up to Plate but Get Taken out at Whole New Ball Game
Page 1 6 of 1783 DOCUMENTS The Times (London) October 6, 2008 Monday Test players step up to plate but get taken out at whole new ball game BYLINE: Josh Chetwynd SECTION: SPORT; Pg.64 LENGTH: 717 words * Trescothick's team strike out in Taunton A few years ago USA Today claimed that hitting a baseball was the hardest thing to do in sport (the newspaper listed stopping a penalty in football as the ninth hardest). Was the statement American hubris or a fair assessment? On Saturday the claim was put to the test as a team of cricketers, including Marcus Trescothick, Ashley Giles, Geraint Jones and Charl Willoughby, gave baseball a try, taking on the Great Britain team in Taunton as part of Trescothick's benefit year. Ian Chappell, the former Australia captain, who is probably the only person to represent his country in cricket and baseball, once said that the idea of a team of cricketers playing a baseball game "wouldn't be worth it". He added: "There would be no contest, absolutely no contest. Cricket's batsmen would struggle to get bat on ball, never mind hitting a home run." As a member of the Britain baseball team for ten years, I was hoping that Chappell would be proved right and that Trescothick and his crew would struggle to transform themselves from batsmen to batters and bowlers to pitchers. On paper at least, Chappell appeared to be correct in his assessment. The Britain team, who won the silver medal at the European Championships in 2007, won the game 21-1.
