Tilte: Need to Start Construction of Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge Over River Brahmaputra
an> Tilte: Need to start construction of Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge over river Brahmaputra. SHRI BADRUDDIN AJMAL (DHUBRI): I would like to draw the attention of the Government towards a long pending public demand for construction of Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge over river Brahamputra which will connect Assam and Meghalaya with the rest of the nation. Presently, people have to travel long distance by road or through water way between Dhubri and Phulbari putting their lives at risk. Several incidents have taken place in which many people have lost their lives. The project was already included under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North East (SARDP-NE) but unfortunately this has been kept pending since several years. Due to importance of this bridge, I have been pursuing this matter for the last six years. I have written several letters as well as I have met concerned ministers and officers on the issue but no development has taken place so far. In February 2013, the then Union Minister of Road & Transport and Highways announced that his ministry had decided to start the construction of a bridge over Brahmaputra to link Dhubri on the north bank and Phulbari on the south bank which will be a part of Rs 1763.27 crore project. However, the project is yet to be started. I humbly request the Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport & Highways with consultation to the Hon'ble Finance Minister to take necessary action to start construction of Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge at the earliest for the larger interest of people. . -

For the purpose of the Study, a survey was carried out in 4 Districts of UP and Bihar in which respondents from over 201 villages were interviewed. Amongst the ASHA and Angadwadi workers, almost all have received some sort of formal education and also hygiene training and all of them are house makers. On the other side, primary occupation of most of the PRI members is farming with very less in business and self- employment. When asked about the time given by these workers and leaders in interacting and solving issues of the fellow villagers, over 57% in Bihar and 52% in UP said to devote somewhere between 1 to 2 hours every day. In the survey conducted, lack of proper facilities was founded to be the major reason behind open defecation with more than 75% of the respondents in both states saying so. -

Profile Community Members 1. Roopesh Rai: Roopesh is our founder and mentor. His ideas always have a fine blend of social equity and business both and that’s what makes his endeavors sustainable. He has this uncanny ability to understand future trends and come up with ideas which are in sync with time. He is also one of the founders of an impact organization – The Green People. This organization has successfully been able to bring meaningful and positive changes in the lives of some villages in Garwahl as well as Kumaon regions of the State of Uttarakhand. He was one of the pre-opening team members of Taj Safari – a safari product offered by Taj group of hotels in Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh. He has worked with Intercontinental Hotels, Taj Group Hotels and Thomas Cook in senior sales and marketing positions. Roopesh believes that there’s always an ‘idea’ in ‘idealism’ and he wears his idealism on his sleeves without fear or apology. Deeply affected by the scenes of death and destruction after the cloudburst at Kedarnath, he walked away from his‘working life’ — at Taj Hotels and Thomas Cook (India) — “to do something pro-climate, pro-people, and for profit”. But although his initial experiments of creating a brand of local goats' cheese ran aground in Uttarakhand — now infamous for outmigration, with over 1,800 ‘ghost villages’ — he didn’t stop looking for a “social engineering solution that also made good business sense”. Somewhere along the way, he started a company that now runs community-friendly farm retreats and homestays in eight Goat Villages, helped revive the traditional, climate-proof koti banal architecture, and began selling farm products under the ‘Bakri Chaap’ label. -
