Hello all Starting off with some rather sombre news, it is with great sadness that I notify you all of the recent passing of Rayma Wilson. Rayma became our President back in 2017 and was very enthusiastic about becoming part of shaping the future of the LBC, sadly she became quite ill and had to relinquish her role after a few months at the helm. On behalf of the LBC I would like to convey our sincere condolences to all her family and loved ones. May you now Rest in Peace, Rayma. The sold out LBC Rhythm & Blues Cruise was a great success and everyone I spoke with said they had a great time. A big thank you to John Lovell for doing 99% of the event organising and for acting as the host with the most for the afternoon. Chester Draws and the Lowboys were fantastic and they informed us of another gig coming up at the AIC – The Australian Italian Club, Prospect on 28th April.

Some of our committee members, club members and friends have formed a couple of bands, check The LBC Jammers Blues Band at the Royal Oak on Sunday 10th March at 2pm – free entry. On Saturday 23rd March at 7.30pm the Blues Busters will be performing at Launceston Workers Club 22 Elizabeth St, Launceston. Hoping you can support our local musicians, both first gigs for each band.

The Forth Valley Blues Festival is almost upon us and their committee have organised a discount ticket rate for our current members, this information has been sent to your emails around a month ago (please email if you did not receive the discount code and I can send again), another good reason to become an LBC member. Thank you Forth Valley Blues Festival. They also invited us to showcase what we do at the LBC to help open the Festival on the Saturday morning, so we have rustled up a band of committee members to play a few tunes to promote what we do at our jams. “The LBC Jammers Blues Band” comprises of Susan Crave on vocals, Jean-Charles Crave on guitar, John Lovell on bass and Dave Keller on drums. Also harmonica player, Phil Dean (one of our Corporate members) will be joining on the day. Rehearsals have been going well by all accounts, so get up early on the Saturday to catch their performance, set time 12.10pm. They are also doing a special pre festival performance at the Royal Oak on Sunday 10th March at 2pm. On Friday 5th April, we are combining with the Launceston Jazz Club to bring you all a night of great music with two bands. Venue at the Boathouse on Northbank and will be early start around 5.30 doors for a 6.00pm performance. The band for the Launceston Jazz Club will be the Spike Mason Quartet and for the Launceston Blues Club, we will be presenting the Billy Whitton Trio. Tickets will be $10 for all. Lock this date into your diaries, it will be a real treat.

I would also like to thank David Grey for providing a great CD Review for Pete Cornelius Band’s newest release, don’t miss reading all about it. I also have a copy and it’s fabulous.

Have a great month. Cheers Kaz …… Karin Grant – President

Vale Rayma Wilson

We at the LBC were very saddened to hear of the recent passing of our past president Rayma. She was a very enthusiastic committee member until ill health caused her to relinquish her role. Sincere condolences to all who were close to Rayma.

Below is a snippet from Oct 2017 Newsletter introducing herself, when she took over the role at a time when the LBC was in great need of committee. We were glad she made the decision to come on board.

“I chanced upon the LBC, Sunday Jam Session, about 4 months ago, and knew I wanted to be involved. I have a love of music and dance. In September all members received a notice seeking Expressions of Interest to fill some of the Committee’s roles. I value the importance for LBC to continue to make a contribution to the Launceston community, so I thought I would attend the meeting as see if I could help in some way.” Around April or May 2018 Stephen Phillips took over as acting President.

Special event - Band premiere at the Royal Oak

The LBC Jammers Band will perform on Sunday 10/03 at the Royal Oak in the afternoon, starting at 2pm. Come along for an afternoon of great music and encourage our own Club musicians at their inaugural gig prior to their showcase performance at the upcoming Forth Valley Blues Festival. You will be the first to see this great new band. Café Noir will be providing a support set. The bar will be open as usual. Please support the venue that supports the Launceston Blues Club.

An exciting new event, be part of history in the making FUSION 5th April 2019

We are excited to bring you our first ever combined gig with the Launceston Jazz Club. Volunteers are needed, two able bodied people with a ute who are free on the Friday (5/4) during the day and also on Saturday morning. We need stage sections (4) dropped off and returned. We also need one or two able bodied people to assist with the load in of the sound and stage equipment from JC’s car during Friday afternoon and load out again Saturday morning. No technical knowledge required. Neither of these roles are expected to take up too much of your time. Without helpers the costs of putting such events increase, making them harder to bring to you at an affordable price. We of course will offer you free tickets into the event as a thank you. Please email your contact details to [email protected] and they will be passed on to JC to co-ordinate times etc. Thank you There’s a First Time for Everything

The LBC in conjunction with the Launceston Jazz Club are bringing you for the first time, a special event from both of our Clubs.

A musical extravaganza where Jazz and Blues collide, we present to you the Spike Mason Quartet and the Billy Whitton Trio. Guaranteed to be a great night of jazz and blues.

Put Friday 5th April in your diaries. It will be an early start with doors at 5.30pm and music from 6.00pm. Door charge is just $10 for all. To be held at the Boathouse Function Rooms at 55a Lindsay St, Invermay.

A Bar snack menu will be available and if you would like to make table bookings for you and your friends, please email [email protected] with your name and how many people for the table. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, however the information will be passed on to the Boathouse and they will organise the table arrangements.

The Spike Mason Quartet plays soulful jazz. The great old standard tunes that make you tap your feet. Swinging and grooving – that’s what you’ll hear. www.spikemason.com Joining Spike are Brendon Siemsen (guitar), Nick Hart (bass) and Andy Dennis (drums).

Billy Whitton is the consummate lounge performer. With his smooth vocal stylings and vast repertoire of Jazz and Blues he has entertained Tasmanian audiences for over thirty years. Joining Billy are Hamish Houston (bass) & Rit Coomber (drums). https://www.facebook.com/Billy-Whitton-138691246639765/

Bo was born on a small farm in Bottleneck, Arkansas, to Joe and Thelma Jenkins. He spent his early years living next door to Levon Helms, future drummer and vocalist for "The Band". After his family moved to Helena Arkansas, Bo grew up hearing his father sing and his grandfather (a full blooded Native American) play guitar.

Bo started his career playing the roadhouses and bars in Helena and up and down Highways 49 and 61. These have produced many renowned musicians such as Sonny Boy Williamson, Conway Twitty, Houston Stackhouse and Willie Dixon. This delta region is where Blues met Country and had a baby named Rock and Roll. Artists such as Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich and Ronnie Hawkins learned their trade in this small town.

Bo spent a few years as a deck hand working on the Mississippi River and was drafted in to the army, serving with the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. After his release, he decided to continue his career in music. His love of playing guitar led him to play many different styles. Over the years Bo has shared the stage with various groups such as Albert King, Reba McIntyre, Earl Thomas Conley, B.B.King and Kansas - thus being one of the few musicians to play major U.S. venues in the three main styles (Rock, Blues and Country).

Bo's music is a combination of Blues, Country and Rock. Bo was raised were music was a part of everyone's life, however it wasn't until later in his career that he began to play Blues. He felt that it actually came rather naturally to him "It was in my blood all along, I just wasn't aware of it".

At this stage in his career Bo was settling down with his Australian wife (Vanda) and family. He and his family took a trip in 1993 to visit Australia, and he liked it so much that he wanted to move here. In 1994 the family uprooted from Arkansas to Melbourne, where he currently resides. He now plays in a trio and is also works solo with acoustic guitar and stomp box.

"His mere talent puts him in the same league as Hendrix and Clapton" is a bold statement to say about someone only few have heard of, but these are the words from "RHYTHMS" magazine about the Bo Jenkins Band on his performance at the, Blues Festival in Australia.

Bo, a left hander, tunes his guitar upside down and plays with the high "E" string on top - allowing him to play some things that right handed players just cannot do. http://www.bojenkins.com/

Do you have a little time to spare? With one of our wonderful committee members recently relocating interstate and some others unable to attend meetings on a regular basis, we would love to have one or two more people come along and join the committee so the LBC can continue to run smoothly. An hour or so on the second Tuesday of the month is all that is required and if you have extra skills that may be of benefit to the LBC, that would be a bonus. Please come along to our next meeting on Tuesday 12th February at 7pm at the Royal Oak Hotel and find out more.

Are you able to help at our next jam? We need some help setting up the stage. We would love to hear from you as we are always on the lookout for helpers to set up the stage prior to the jam (please arrive at 12.00pm) and to help pack away after the jam. Many hands make light work and are appreciated.

Also a jam co-ordinator is required to facilitate the smooth running of the jam and includes some microphone time as next jammers are called up to the stage.

Please let us know if you can help by emailing [email protected] or come by early to help with the load in.

Equipment: Microphones, a guitar and bass amp are supplied, the rest is loaned by our wonderful jammers. The drum kit is loaned, if you have a kit that you don’t mind be used on jam day, please contact us as we don’t want just one person providing their own equipment all the time, we would like others to please share the love [email protected]

New Zealand funk and soul legend Leo de Castro dies at age 70

by PAUL CASHMERE on MARCH 4, 2019 Leo de Castro, who played at the first and second Sunbury Pop Festivals in 1972 and 1973, has died in New Zealand at age 70. de Castro was born on New Zealand’s North Island in 1948. At age 21 he moved to Sydney, Australia in 1969.

Leo became the vocalist of choice for (, 1971), The Johnny Rocco Band (Heading In the Right Direction, 1975) and his own Leo de Castro and Babylon (Suspicious Minds, 1979).

His first band, The Browns, featured Ray Arnott (, Jimmy Barnes) and Rockwell T James). He then formed Friends. Leo was with Friends when he played at the very first Sunbury. Three of their performances ‘Lucille’, ‘Bird On A Wire’ and ‘La La Song’ were included on the ‘Sunbury 1973 – The Great Rock Festival’ live album. Leo also joined Lobby Loyde and the Coloured Balls and Billy Thorpe at Sunbury.

Leo moved to Hobart in 1995 where he formed Leo de Castro and the Cuban Heels. In 2008, in ill health, he returned to live in Auckland.

In the liner notes to the 2017 release ‘Leo de Castro & Friends’, Leo told Ian McFarlane “I’ve got a heart condition now. Some health issues that need looking at”.

He also said, “I can’t really talk for too long, I start to stumble. I forget things, I used to have a good memory, but nowadays, you know…”.

In 2017 Gil Matthews released ‘Leo de Castro & Friends’ on his Aztec Records label. The 2-disc set features selections from Leo’s various band with a second disc featuring the Sunbury, Rock Isle Festival and Moomba performances of 1972 and 1973. This is some very sad news just in, in particular for our wider music community, as he had many ties to Tasmania, Leo de Castro will be sorely missed. May you Rest in Peace and our thoughts go out to all loved ones. Kaz
