    Working for Peanuts by Mark Matteson Whenever I walked into the room as a kid, my father would say “Hiya, Charlie!” You see, when I was five years old and living in Japan, I looked just like Charlie Brown, the Peanuts character. I had a big round head, a wisp of blond hair with a cowlick, and I could most often be seen in a tee shirt and shorts. I was a dead ringer, complete with the paradox of hope and self- doubt on the inside. As I grew older, there was something about the Peanuts message and characters that really resonated with me. I always felt better after reading the daily strip. It was unlike any other cartoon of the day, thought-provoking, with little kids talking like adults. At age 10, I began my very first journal. I would cut out the daily Peanuts cartoon and paste it into a scrapbook. I bought every Peanuts book I could find. To this day, I draw a mean Charlie Brown. I recently finished listening to the audio book, Schulz and Peanuts, by David Michaelis. It’s an incredibly well-written biography profiling the extraordinary ascent of an American icon. Born on November 26, 1922, he was a great humorist, philosopher, and, of course, world-renowned and beloved cartoonist.     386 Oryx collecting itch' grew, and reinforces his story with pleasing, colourful descriptions of the scenery of the Okavango swamps. His account of the bird life round the Thamalakane river, where he saw kingfishers, pygmy geese, African jacanas, cormorants and fish-eagles, is particularly memorable. The slight jerkiness of style, the occasional cliches and lapses into anacoluthon, and the positioning of photographs, could well be irritating in a book which lacked this one's outstanding merits. The lasting impression is of a charming, likeable man whose integrity and depth of knowledge are indisputable, and whose brief, philosophical dissertations on what conservation really is (particularly effective in his postscript) seem more telling and less pompous than those of many authors who have writ- ten on the subject.     Prologue For a student of geology, fl ying in a small plane for the fi rst time from Nairobi, Kenya, down to Kigoma, a town in western Tanzania at the edge of Lake Tanganyika, must be an exciting experience. Africa can seem like a mythical, magical place to any newcomer; but for someone interested in geology, that fl ight from Nairobi to Kigoma is a real-life classroom lesson at one of the most spectacular geological features in the world: the East African Rift. The Rift! Where immense subterranean forces have slowly, during the last 25 million years, ripped open a deep gash in the crust of the earth. And when, on a clear day, you ride in that small, bouncing plane south- west from Nairobi to Kigoma, you may at some point be able to imagine reaching out and down to touch the rift, which from high enough above can look like a painful wound in the planetary skin. You’ll discover as well, as you begin to move above the western edge of Tanzania, a place where that great wound has fi lled up with water, blue and glistening, and become Lake Tanganyika. You will also recognize that the high escarp- ment rising up so abruptly on the eastern shore of the lake is a stressed, compressed, and eroded edge of that giant piece of torn skin. The airstrip at Kigoma is where you’ll land, and you can walk or be driven down to the lake and take a boat north for a couple of hours until you disembark at one of the biologically richest and best-known forests in the world: the Gombe forest, which grows right there on the rift escarpment.
