Annual savings in excess of €80,000 and a reduction of C02 emissions by at least 215,000KG per annum can be achieved by Cork County Council following its involvement in the development of energy saving technology for personal computers.

Cork County Council’s ICT Department began collaborating closely with the EnergyWatchIT team over a year and a half ago when it was still in UCC’s Incubation Centre.

Launching the EnergyWatchIT initiative, Cllr Tim Lombard, Mayor of said, “The Council takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and we have now adopted EnergyWatchIT as our flagship project for the new Energy Map partnership process signed with the Sustainable Energy Authority of (SEAI).

“We expect to save in excess of 400,000kWh of electricity p.a. which will contribute greatly to our National target of a 33% saving in energy by 2020. We will also reduce our C02 emissions by at least 215,000 kg p.a. aiding our commitments of a 21% reduction in emissions by 2020 as agreed when joining the European Covenant of Mayors Initiative,” said Cllr Lombard at the launch in County Hall

Cllr Lombard paid tribute to the Council’s Information Technology staff, adding that “as the principal partner for the product, the trials that they have completed and the innovative suggestions that they have made have led to many product improvements.”

Project Coordinator, Declan Connolly said “we are delighted to have played a key part in bringing to market a new innovative green IT product which will save organisations money as well as reducing their carbon footprint. We are also proud of the fact that the expertise that we have provided during application development has resulted in a great product and is supporting a Cork based company giving employment locally.”

An awareness campaign centred on email, posters and the use of EnergyWatchIT champions will encourage CCC staff to buy into the idea of energy saving. In particular, the Green Button Poster Campaign which promotes the concept of sleeping machines while at meetings, breaks, etc will boost total Council saving to €80,000 in the first year.

Cllr. Lombard said he looked forward to EnergyWatchIT becoming a great success for the Council and wished 3PRO Energy Watch every success in their future endeavours.

Sean Cronin, CEO of 3Pro Energy Watch Ltd, the EnergyWatchIT product developers, thanked Cork Co Council for their commitment to the validation of the early product releases. ‘The Green Button Campaign, which promotes the use of the EnergyWatchIT Software kit, is already saving companies’ approx €65 per p.c. per year and Schools over €50 for a 10 month School year.
