Portrait Master Template Version 6 – 16 December 2016 The story of ZABIVAKA™, the coolest little grey wolf in Russia begins in Tyumen, Siberia. This document expands on his character and his journey from humble beginnings to 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Official Mascot. Each section here suggests a possible back story that will bring him to life for his millions of followers around the world, and inspire a whole new generation of young football players and fans. ZABIVAKA™ is the youngest in a big family of Siberian grey wolves. He lives with his 4 brothers, 5 sisters, mum, dad, aunts, uncles and cousins. All together there are 19 wolves in his pack. His dad is the leader of the pack and the reason why ZABIVAKA™ is so crazy about football. He used to play when he was a youngster, but hung up his boots many years ago; now he’s just a huge fan of the local team, along with his own brothers and sisters and ZABIVAKA of course. It’s safe to say this is one football crazy wolf pack. ZABIVAKA™ practices his skills everyday with his big bother - what he lacks in skill he makes up for in enthusiasm - and best friend from school. Sometimes, when they’re not busy with their other interests, ZABIVAKA™’s brothers and sisters join him for a 5-a-side match. None of them can keep up with him but they all love playing with him and supporting him. It was ZABIVAKA™’s science mad sister who designed his special glasses that help him target the goal with pin-point accuracy. ZABIVAKA™ has relatives in other parts of Russia, and in the summer he travels with the pack to visit his cousins in the Caucasus. ZABIVAKA™ is sociable and clicks with people easily, this is how he gathered a great collection of postcards from around the world: countless relatives and friends helped him with this. As the youngest in a family he is the most loved grandson. He helps his grandparents, who live close by, to clear the snow from their driveway in winter and to take care of their garden in the summer. When he was a little wolf, his mother read him many bedtime stories. ZABIVAKA™ is a big fan of stories by the famous Russian writer Pavel Bazhov ZABIVAKA™ is from Tyumen in Siberia, which is about 2500km east of Moscow. He is very proud of his Siberian heritage and has learned all about the history of his region at school. Tyumen was the first Russian settlement in Siberia, and his family can be traced all the way back to its earliest days. Being a wolf he is happy to play football in all conditions, but the ground can get a bit hard in January when the temperatures can drop as low as -50℃. 2 Along with all of his friends at school, the environment has become a subject ZABIVAKA™ is very keen to talk about. Part of his job as the Official Mascot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ will be to promote environmental projects happening in Russia. He maybe a cheeky little wolf but he also cares deeply about the world. He can’t wait to raise awareness about his family’s habitat when travelling around Russia and throughout the world in the build up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup™. ZABIVAKA™ lives and breathes football. Most of his family can’t remember a time when they’ve seen him without a ball. His mum sometimes has to tell him off for playing keepy-uppy under the dinner table while they are eating, but even she knows she’s fighting a losing battle. When we tell you that he sleeps with a football, you can get an idea of just how obsessed he is with the game. From as far back as he can remember ZABIVAKA™ has dreamed of being a football superstar, and his parents are happy to support him as much as they can so he can achieve his goal but, in the meantime, they are going to make sure he doesn’t fall behind in his schoolwork. Luckily, as well as having the best football skills in Tyumen, he is also a grade A schoolboy, but you better believe the moment his homework is done he will be back outside practicing ball skills or watching his favourite players on the television. When training alone with the ball in the backyard, ZABIVAKA™ likes to imagine playing with and against his favourite players. He replicates their styles of play – initially doing skillful down-to- earth dribbles and then switching to a more powerful and straight-line style. ZABIVAKA™ is able to successfully combine many styles of play making him incredibly versatile. He also has phenomenal speed and has taken to wearing cool sports glasses (designed by his sister) when he’s in action. He pushes these up onto his forehead and sometimes winks when he scores a goal. He has also developed a cheeky tribute move that he likes to do after he scores - sliding on his knees followed by an excited howl. ZABIVAKA™ is an amazing goal scorer too, often leaving spectators on the edge of their seat. Football helps ZABIVAKA™ stay super healthy, so his parents don’t mind so much when like most young wolves his age, he wants to stay inside and play video games. Obviously there is only one game he plays online with his friends; FIFA! He likes playing online with his football crazy school friends and has even played against other football mascots. He often plays against Fuleco™ the armadillo, who was the Official Mascot of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. They have become good friends and share pictures and stories about their life. They hope to play against each other one day for real. 3 ZABIVAKA™ is a cool young wolf and looking stylish is important to him. You’ll never see a crease in his fresh kit while he is out with his friends. His glasses are his trademark and as well as using them to score goals they complete his cool look. The little wolf loves music, and his fancy footwork isn’t always confined to the football pitch, this wolf can drop some moves on the dance floor too. And yes — he is good at ice-skating and skiing. ZABIVAKA™ loves typical Russian food: borsch and grechka (buckwheat porridge), and his mum knows how to please him with a nice treat: his favourite dessert is syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes). First on the list: to be the best FIFA World Cup™ Official Mascot EVER! Then, to be the best football player. EVER! To be the first grey wolf to captain Russia in a FIFA World Cup™ AND of course to score the winning goal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ If it’s not too much to ask, also to win the Golden Boot in the FIFA World Cup™. Any one will be OK, 2022, 2026… ZABIVAKA™ has come a very long way from playing football with his brothers and sisters to being the Official Mascot of the biggest football event on Earth, but he is ready to make Russia (and his pack) proud. He knows that football can bring people together, no matter where you are from and what pack you belong to. ZABIVAKA™ is a little wolf with a big heart, he is cheeky and loves scoring, but he is the first to celebrate his teammates' goals, and he will be the first to cheer at matches around Russia when he watches his favourite superstar players from around the world scoring goals during the tournament. Like all footballers he doesn’t like losing, but it really is the taking part that matters, and what honour is greater for a football player than playing for your country in the World Cup? ZABIVAKA™ knows that no honour could be greater for a young wolf from Tyumen Siberia than representing his country as the Official Mascot of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. 4 .

    Ville Titoff Looking Green Visual Environmental Framing of FIFA – The Context of the Football World Cup 2014 in Brazil University of Tampere School for Social Sciences and Humanities MDP in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research (history) Master’s Thesis February 2017 Abstract The environment has been studied to have a central role in positively peaceful and sustainable development. Thus, it is important to learn more about the alternative contexts where different actors are shaping the global environmental governance process. My research is mapping these alternative contexts and actors by examining how the global corporation family of the world football federation, FIFA, participated in the environmental framing process in the context of the biggest and the most global popular sports event of the world, the football World Cup. More precisely, the context is the latest World Cup-project in Brazil, between years 2007–2014. As the visual material is a very powerful tool in different framing processes, the focus in this research has been on the visual publications of FIFA. To be more precise, I have analyzed the environment-related photographs published by FIFA in their official website, fifa.com. These photographs have been analyzed with the methods of social semiotics, and by using the contemporary historical approach with a careful source critique and deep understanding of the time period and locational context. Content analysis helped to categorize my findings. I discovered that the visual image of the environmental sustainability campaign of FIFA was not as environmentally responsible as it looks at a first glance. It seems that FIFA selected environmental topics that were easy to make look good, and which were able to receive a lot of media attention.
