Yoga is twinned with sāṃkhya as one of the six orthodox darshanas (worldviews) of Hindu philosophy, with Patañjali’s Yogaśāstra having been codified by around the fifth century of the Common Era. A distinct body of texts known as the haṭhayoga corpus appears around the 11th century and emphasizes physical practices most likely used by ascetic communities. The ultimate aim of yoga is described by various words (e.g., kaivalya, samādhi, mokṣa, etc.); it is often described as an experience of an individual soul’s uniting with the divine, and/or becoming liberated from the material world.

As opposed to the official history of Kundalini Yoga that claims it as an ancient and secret tradition prior to Yogi Bhajan’s open teaching of it, this article argues that it was a bricolage created by Yogi Bhajan himself and derived from two main figures: a hatha yoga teacher named Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari (1924-1994) and the Sikh sant Maharaj Virsa Singh (1934-2007). Al contrario della versione uf1iciale del Kundalini Yoga, che lo descrive come una tradizione antica e segreta prima che Yogi Bhajan iniziasse ad insegnarlo apertamente, questo articolo sostiene che si sia trattato di un collage creato da Yogi Bhajan stesso assemblando materiali derivati da due 1igure principali: un insegnante di hatha yoga chiamato Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari (1924–1994) e il sikh Sant Maharaj Virsa Singh (1934–2007).
