MID-SOUTH BANK 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Meeting The Challenge How We Work

Donors: Food and Money to Purchase Food

Agencies Hungry Mid-Southerners Meeting the Challenge 2019-2020 Board of Directors Brooke Balducci The fiscal year that began on July 1, 2019 looked very different from where it ended in June 2020. In CBIZ MHM, LLC & July 2019, we officially moved into our new, beautiful warehouse and office facility on South Perkins in Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C. Memphis. After years of planning, raising funds, working with architects, contractors and designers, the new facility for Mid-South was complete and we were home. Everyone involved knew it Matthew L. Barron was what we needed to take Mid-South Food Bank to the next level of food distribution and service to International Paper our 31-county community. So, when COVID-19 hit in March, 2020, though we didn't know exactly what Clifford DeBerry we were getting into, we knew we had the to handle an MLGW emergency and we felt ready to meet the challenge. Bryan T. Foley But before the pandemic, there was still a lot going on at the Food Bank. We First Horizon introduced the MealConnect program that featured an app so restaurants and other food outlets could notify us when they had excess food to donate. It Joel Goldblatt connects them with volunteers who are ready to get the food and transport it Deloitte & Touche LLP to a partner agency. We began a partnership with Compost Fairy to make the most from the food we had to discard because it did not meet our distribution Eric Gould AutoZone standards. Even though we had to restrict volunteers in the warehouse, due to COVID-19 we still had 7,850 volunteers donate nearly 30,000 hours of time. Cathy Pope Florence Hervery We launched a Mobile Pantry blitz in four counties in Tennessee to increase CMI Healthcare Services the amount of food we were distributing in rural areas and took a critical look at increasing distribution in the 18 counties we serve in north Mississippi, Susan Hunsberger where we do not have access to USDA food that helps us so much in Community Volunteer Tennessee. By increasing the number of Mobile Pantry distributions and recruiting new agencies, we were beginning to see progress, but the big story Rick James in Mississippi was the opening of our warehouse in Batesville in April, 2020. Castle Retail Group/Cash Savers It is 35,000 square feet and includes cooler and freezer space so we are Brent C. Johnson, DDS better positioned to serve north Mississippi with both deliveries and agency Firestone Dental Group pick-ups. Florence Hervery Janet Brueck Lang When the pandemic hit, so much changed. Our food distribution had been around 1.5 million pounds of Community Volunteer food a month. But with kids out of school early, businesses closing, job losses and food shortages, Mid-South Food Bank was needed as never before. Our distribution doubled. Then it tripled. The Jason Martin Mobile Pantry became our workhorse – with trucks leaving every morning, taking food to as many as Tupelo/Lee County Hunger 17 Mobile Pantry sites in one day. The public stepped up as 316 churches and other organizations that Coalition had the space and the volunteers hosted Mobile Pantry food distributions throughout our service area, providing nearly 8 million pounds of food to thousands of individuals and families in need. We began a Keith C. Payet United Healthcare Community program we had only talked about before: home deliveries. Seniors and others who could not get to a Care food pantry or Mobile Pantry needed help, so we partnered with Neighborhood Christian Center in Memphis and with local police and sheriff's departments in small towns and rural areas for home Thomas Rieger deliveries of food boxes, fresh produce and more. The program has been so popular that all partners CBIZ MHM, LLC & want to make it a permanent part of their outreach. Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C.

By June 30, 2020, we had distributed a total of 31,879,757 pounds of food, or more than 26 million Harley Steffens meals – a record unheard of in the history of Mid-South Food Bank. Nearly twice as much as the EVANS | PETREE PC previous record. It is a testament to the incredible staff here, who worked long hours, took on extra duties and did everything possible to stay healthy and safe. But we could not have done it without the LaTina Epps-Thomas ND Authentically Living Natural help of the donors you will see in these pages who gave food, funds and thousands of hours of time. We know we are not finished yet, but we have seen what we can do and we plan to keep doing it. Rebecca Z. Yeung FedEx Corporation

odern day bread lines include hundreds of cars lining up at local churches and community centers. Thousands of families every week are waiting to drive through Mid-South Food Bank Mobile Pantry distributions, where volunteers place boxes of fresh produce and dairy, along with nonperishable food, inside client vehicles. It was in a line outside of the Holly Springs Multi- M Purpose Building where we met 52-year-old Tina Baker.

Ms. Baker drove 30 minutes from her home in Byhalia, MS to get in line before the sun came up, early that July morning. She didn’t want to miss the 10:00 a.m. start time. Mobile Pantries are an extension of brick-and- mortar food pantries, designed to keep clients in their cars for social distancing while providing 40-50 pounds of food to about 500 households per distribution.

"It helps out right now because it's safer," said Baker. She has more of an incentive to stay in her car than most folks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Baker lives with several loved ones with high susceptibility to catching an illness. She takes care of her elderly father, autistic son, and granddaughter. Baker herself is no longer able to work because of her own disability. "It's really important, especially for seniors and the disabled living on a limited income, and families with kids who get free lunch at school," said Baker. This is her first time visiting a Mobile Pantry. At the beginning of the shutdown, her husband broke his leg. He’s now back at work selling parts at a car dealership, but the company cut his paycheck by 10%.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in Marshall County, the unemployment rate was less than 5% before COVID-19. It rose to 11% during the pandemic.

While Baker is thankful she has peace of mind that she can feed her family because of Mid-South Food Bank, she says it warms her heart to see so many generous people giving what they have to help others in a time of crisis.

"It's helping families tremendously," said Baker. "You have to pass blessings to get blessings. If you're able to help, that’s how you get your blessings."

eighborhood Christian Center (NCC) has been a single parents with unreliable transportation, and COVID positive Food Bank partner agency for many years, families. NCC has a dedicated staff of six people answering calls providing a variety of programs to help and coordinating deliveries, 10 staff drivers, and approximately individuals and families move toward stability 200 volunteer drivers. Last Spring, the COVID-19 organization even built its own database to ensure Home Bound crisis gave birth to a fundamental program to Deliveries were made as efficiently as possible. NCC also works help alleviate some challenges faced by many to support smaller agencies that do not have food storage people in our community: lack of mobility capabilities. N and transportation. “We like to do things that are more challenging for our partners who can’t meet those needs because of limitations. We want to make sure those needs are met,” said Johnson.

During the height of the health crisis, NCC was receiving an average of 1,000 calls per week from clients needing help feeding themselves or their families. Six months later in NCC’s Renee Crayton with volunteer Ricardo Harrison September 2020, they were still receiving between 500-600 calls a week. Johnson In March 2020, Mid-South Food Bank President & CEO Cathy Pope says her staff isn’t only keeping bellies full, but also helping to met with Neighborhood Christian Center President & CEO, Ephie feed their souls, especially the seniors. Johnson, about coming together to feed those in our community who were not able to leave their homes. Before the pandemic, "Our staff meet with every client over the phone. We make 'care NCC was serving their food pantry clients through curbside calls' to check in with them, pray with them, and just chat when services. However, they knew the program needed to evolve and they call because they’re lonely," said Johnson. meet folks where they are, in their homes. The answer was home delivery, with food provided by Mid-South Food Bank, packed in NCC’s next goal is to expand the Home Bound Delivery program to boxes and bags by NCC, and delivered throughout the Memphis serve more of Mid-South Food Bank's 31-county service area. area. Johnson says they’re working to develop 2-3 more hubs in the near future. "Home delivery is like Uber or Shipt," said Johnson, "We developed the program because of COVID-19, and it will stay part "This is something we can do for the community and brings me of the organization." warmth because we can partner with the Food Bank," said Johnson. Since the Home Bound Delivery program began in late March, NCC has distributed food boxes to more than 5,000 unique households. The program serves seniors, people with disabilities,

3 Challenge : Food for the Community

"We're a year and half into this partnership and we saw live and work. For the second year, Tyson the same demand before the pandemic," said Welch. "There's partnered with Mid-South Food Bank to provide their employees and the residents of Dyer County, with extra nutrition by sponsoring Mobile Pantry food distributions once a month in NTewbern, Tennessee, where the Tyson plant produces Jimmy Dean Sausage. Since 2019, Tyson has granted the Food Bank a total of $50,000 to support the community.

"I think it's a way to minister to the community. Newbern is a small town and we're the largest employer," said Stan Welch, Tyson plant manager. "It's a hand and a glove; a perfect fit to bring the community together and help."

Restaurants are one of Tyson’s largest customer base, and because they have taken a hit from COVID-19, the plant has a surplus of product, so Welch, along with other managers, have loaded pallets of extra protein on to 4-5 pickup trucks every month and taken the product to the Mobile Pantry distributions.

"Tyson has been wonderful and they bring extra Tyson employees Kim Bullion (l) and Stan Welch (r) with the Food Bank's Lakeisha Edwards food each month to help supplement the Food Bank’s portion," always been a need, the pandemic created a greater need, but the said Cindy Reed, City of Newbern office manager. need has always been here."

This is the first year the church has been involved with the program, providing the majority of the volunteers. "First Baptist has taken the ministry to heart and is very dedicated to helping," said Welch.
