WILLIAMS, GENE GERMANOVICH, STEPHEN WEBBER, GABRIELLE TARINI Unlocking NATO’s Amphibious Potential Lessons from the Past, Insights for the Future orth Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members maintain amphibious capabilities that provide versatile and responsive forces for crisis response and national defense. These forces are routinely employed in maritime Nsecurity, noncombatant evacuation operations (NEO), counterterrorism, stability operations, and other missions. In addition to U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and U.S. Navy forces, the Alliance’s amphibious forces include large ships and associated landing forces from five nations: France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom (UK). Each of these European allies—soon to be joined by Turkey—can conduct brigade-level operations, and smaller elements typically are held at high readiness for immediate response.1 These forces have been busy. Recent exercises and operations have spanned the littorals of West and North Africa, the Levant, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Given NATO’s ongoing concerns over Russia’s military posture and malign behavior, allies with amphibious capabilities have also been exploring how these forces could contribute to deterrence or, if needed, be employed as part of a C O R P O R A T I O N combined and joint force in a conflict against a highly some respects, NATO’s ongoing efforts harken back to the capable nation-state. North Atlantic Treaty Organization www.nato.int/factsheets Factsheet March 2021 Key NATO and Allied exercises in 2021 NATO Allies and partners conduct exercises to test procedures and tactics, develop best practices and identify areas for improvement. Exercises are designed to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction. NATO exercises vary in scope, duration and form. Live exercises can involve thousands of troops; they am to demonstrate and develop the extensive military capabilities that NATO Allies need to keep our nations safe. Computer-assisted exercises take place in a classroom and focus on procedures. In addition to military exercises, the Alliance organises civilian and political training events as well. Allies also train together in national and multi-national exercises. NATO and Allied exercises in numbers In 2020, NATO conducted 88 of the 113 NATO military exercises originally scheduled for 2020. Allies held 176 national and multinational exercises. The COVID-19 pandemic did affect the full execution of the planned NATO Exercise Programme, and some NATO exercises were modified or cancelled. For the others, sensible precautions were taken to ensure participatns’ safety. The overall impact on NATO’s exercise proramme has been limited. For 2021, a total of 95 NATO exercises are planned. According to information provided by Allies, they will conduct 220 national and multinational exercises. The exercises led by NATO and Allies this year include around 20 joint (multi-domain) exercises, 24 exercises primarily focused on the land domain, 24 exercises in the air domain, and 9 exercises focused mainly on maritime operations.

The growth occurred within the commercial lines of business (65 % of the growth), within Sweden and denmark (27 % of the growth) and within change of ownership insurance (8 % of the growth). Protector entered the danish insurance market in 2012, at first focusing on the municipality sector. Cost ratio decreased significantly in 2012. Gross cost ratio totalled 12.7 % compared to 15.0 % in 2011. The decrease was driven by a strong top line development in combination with significant focus on cost efficiency in the commercial sector. The combined ratio was 86.2 % in 2012. This is one of the best ratios among the Scandinavian non-life insurance companies. The return on investments was 8.9 % compared to a negative return of 2.3 % in 2011. Tightening of credit spreads and strong market for equities contributed to the strong result. The operating profit amounted to NOK 393.5 million compared to NOK 82.9 million in 2011. The company’s underlying profitability is strong.
