The exhibition is the first ever international showcase of the archive of British architect, Yale School of Architecture professor, and Pritzker Prize laureate James Stirling (1926–1992), presenting the work of one of the most important and innovative architects of the twentieth century. STATEMENT ON A MATTER OF OFFICIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Bailiff: Now we come to a second statement by the Minister for Planning and Environment regarding the appointment of an Architectural Supremo. 8. Senator F.E. Cohen (The Minister for Planning and Environment): It gives me great pleasure to report that I have appointed an Architectural Supremo to advise me on design issues for the Waterfront. I have appointed Hopkins Architects of London, recently voted one of the world’s top 5 most admired architects by his peers. The practice is run by Sir Michael Hopkins. Hopkins Architects have a reputation for creating buildings that combine innovation and popular public appeal often in a sensitive setting. They consistently win major international awards and most notably were awarded the RIBA’s (Royal Institute of British Architects) Royal Gold Medal. Hopkins work across all architectural sectors including master planning in urban regeneration but have become best known for landmark buildings such as Glyndebourne Opera House in Sussex, Portcullis House at Westminster, the Mound stand at Lord’s cricket ground, the Welcome Trust Headquarters and the Aviemore Children’s Hospital. They are also working on several major international projects including a business village in Dubai, campuses at Yale and Princeton Universities and an office, retail and restaurant tower in Tokyo. Sir Michael Hopkins is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland, the Royal College of Art, Nottingham University, London Guild Hall University, University of East Anglia and he is a Royal Academician. He has served as President of the Architectural Association, as a Royal Fine Art Commissioner and as a Member of the London Advisory Committee to English Heritage. -

M i c h a e l M c N a m a r a [email protected] Michael McNamara is a British-American architect with over 20 years’ experience in design, building, and teaching. He has ability in all phases of design and building production, and is particularly skilled in the areas of conceptual design, technical detailing, and digital design. Born and educated in the USA, he moved to London, England in 1987 to take a position with James Stirling and Michael Wilford Assocs. There he worked on the second phase of the Stuttgart arts complex, on an addition to Milan’s Brera Gallery, and on the SWA entry to the Disney Concert Hall Competition. He also worked for Richard Rogers Architects where he gained technical expertise in building structures and exterior envelopes. At Kohn Pederson Fox (Intl.) from 1990-93, he designed and detailed projects in London, Frankfurt, and Hamburg. In 1993, he started in private practice as LaMa Architects, which produced theoretical and practical projects ranging from buildings and cladding systems to urban designs. From1993 until 2001, Mr. McNamara was also a Unit Master at the Architectural Association. During this period he lectured widely in Europe, America, and Asia. In 2001-02 he was invited to return to the USA to serve as a Visiting Critic for the Harvard Design School and at Cornell University, among others. In 2004, he and his Partner, M E LaGess reopened the LaMa Studio in London with a range of office, residential and development projects. Sustainable by Design Hopkins Architects Hopkins Hopkins’ “quest for architectural sophistication dovetails seamlessly with superior environmental performance” Hopkins Architects’ commitment to environmentally-advanced design is remarkable and deeply rooted in strategic commitments made more than a decade ago. They are unquestionably pioneers in this increasingly crucial aspect of architecture. In the United States, the practice recently completed the LEED™ ‘Platinum’ rated, Carbon- Neutral Kroon Hall for Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. That followed completion of Northern Arizona University’s Advanced Research and Development building, one of the highest-scoring LEED™ ‘Platinum’ buildings in the country. In the United Kingdom in 1996, Hopkins was the first practice to achieve the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for their Inland Revenue Centre. Since then they have designed buildings that already achieve the Government’s 2050 target of 80% cuts in CO2 emissions and are designing to the new highest level of BREEAM, ‘Outstanding.’ Crucially, Hopkins’ approach does not produce repetitive, off-the-shelf environmental design: each building is a specific expression of architectural composition, innovation, function, refined detail, materiality and presence. In every case, and in challenging settings, the quest for architectural sophistication dovetails seamlessly with superior environmental performance - and this ambitious fusion of design and performance has set Hopkins Architects apart.
