The path of search in this direction is broad, its bends are diverse, its forks numerous; the solutions will be many. Among them, those connected in our art with the name of A. Exter will remain as an ex- ample of courage, freedom, and subtlety. The upsurge of strength and courage in the plastic arts wanes neither beyond the Rhine nor at home, and it is expressed in the high level of pure painting unprecedented in our coun- try, a phenomenon that is characteristic of its contemporary state. The text of this piece, "Kubizm," is from an anthology of poems, prose pieces, and articles, Poshchechina obshchestvennomu vkusu [A Slap in the Face of Public Taste] (Moscow, December 1912 [according to bibl. R350, p. 17, although January 1913, according to KL], pp. 95-101 [bibl. R275]. The collection was prefaced by the famous declaration of the same name signed by David Burliuk, Velimir Khlebni- kov, Aleksei Kruchenykh, and Vladimir Mayakovsky and dated December 1912. The volume also contained a second essay by David Burliuk on texture [bibl. R269], verse by Khlebnikov and Benedikt Livshits, and four prose sketches by Vasilii Kan- dinsky [for further details see bibl. 133, pp. 45-50]. Both the essay on cubism and the one on texture were signed by N. Burliuk, although it is obvious that both were written by David and not by Nikolai (David's youngest brother and a poet of some merit). -

Blanton Professor Mairi McLaughlin Summer 2017 Abstract Serious Play: Formal Innovation and Politics in French Literature from the 1950s to the Present By Aubrey Ann Gabel Doctor of Philosophy in French University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Lucey, Chair Serious Play: Formal Innovation and Politics in French literature from the 1950s to the present investigates how 20th- and 21st-century French authors play with literary form as a means of engaging with contemporary history and politics. Authors like Georges Perec, Monique Wittig, and Jacques Jouet often treat the practice of writing like a game with fixed rules, imposing constraints on when, where, or how they write. They play with literary form by eliminating letters and pronouns; by using only certain genders, or by writing in specific times and spaces. While such alterations of the French language may appear strange or even trivial, by experimenting with new language systems, these authors probe into how political subjects—both individual and collective—are formed in language. The meticulous way in which they approach form challenges unspoken assumptions about which cultural practices are granted political authority and by whom. This investigation is grounded in specific historical circumstances: the student worker- strike of May ’68 and the Algerian War, the rise of and competition between early feminist collectives, and the failure of communism and the rise of the right-wing extremism in 21st-century France. -

Yearly Cycle of Slavic Celebrations – Attempted Reconstruction As a rule, modern Rodnovers use the Gregorian calendar in which the Latin names are substituted with the Slavic ones. The dates of Slavic celebrations come from the Julian (Church) calendar (the new and the old style), however, the timing differences between them are not taken into account. E.g. modern Rodnovers celebrate Veles Day on the Day of St. Blasius, 11th of Feb according to the Gregorian calendar. In the past, the Day of St. Blasius was celebrated on the 11th of Feb of the old style, which corresponds to the 24th of Feb the new style. Rodnovers apply the same rule to most of Slavic celebrations – dates come from the church calendar and names are changed. They explain it by the fact that after the Christianization the Christian celebrations overlapped the pagan ones. That is correct, but it doesn’t mean that reconstruction of the Slavic traditional calendar can be done by only substituting Christian names. A closer look at the folk’s traditional calendar reveals that the overlapping was caused not only by matching dates of celebrations but by semantics of Christian celebrations. Correspondence between names and images of Christian saints and Slavic gods played a significant role too such as Veles/Vlasiy & Juriy/Jarila. Moreover, often pagan rituals are linked to different days of the church calendar. We suggest avoiding linking pagan celebration dates to the church calendar. So, we present our reconstruction of pagan calendar based on yearly natural phenomena and ethnography studies. Spring Traditional spring celebrations are not tightly attached to any particular dates. -

The Russian Folk Calendar: an Ethnolinguistic Perspective∗

The Russian National Calendar: An Ethnolinguistic Dictionary, compiled with academic consultation from Elena Berezovich, is the first dictionary of chrononyms that offers a holistic perspective of Russian folk calendar. It is thematically related to monographs and lexicographic analysis by Svetlana Tolstaya (2005), as well as the works of A.W. Chernyh (2009) and O. V. Vorstikova (2000), all of which are well-known publications in the Slavic milieu. With its systems of temporal divisions and regulations of the annual cycle, the folk calendar is the core of traditional culture since it organizes all aspects of traditional life, not only ritual cycles, agricultural and living practices, but also, to a considerable extent, beliefs, religious rites, obligations and prohibitions followed by a given community, as well as established norms, the breach of which is believed to have negative effects on that community. Therefore, the researcher is confronted here with a complex and multi-stage task of describing the linguistic material, including such elements of the description as linguistic (dialectal) characteristics of the lexicon (including, where possible, phraseology), the characteristics of ethnocultural realia attached to each name, as well as geographical characteristics of the relevant terminology, rituals, and myths. One of the possible ways of providing such thorough descriptions is the ethnolinguistic dictionary, proposed by Svetlana Tolstaya (2005: 23) and applied to the Slavic calendar (in particular to the Polish calendar). -
Slavic and Kazakh Folklore Calendar: Typological and Ethno-Cultural Parallels
http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/FEJF2016.63.vlasova SLAVIC AND KAZAKH FOLKLORE CALENDAR: TYPOLOGICAL AND ETHNO-CULTURAL PARALLELS Galina Vlasova Abstract: The study of multi-ethnic folk typology in the ethno-cultural region of Kazakhstan is of fundamental importance in the context of ethno-cultural typo- logical parallels identifying the holiday calendar and rituals. The mechanism of folk typology is observed in ritual structures that compare the Slavic and Kazakh folklore calendars. There are typological parallels between all components in different Kazakhstan ethnic group celebrations: texts, rites, rituals, and cults. The Kazakh and Slavic calendar systems have a collective character as func- tional and are passed down from generation to generation. The entire annual cycle of Eurasian festivals is based on the collective existence principle. The Slavic holiday calendar represents a dual faith synthesis of pagan and Christian enti- ties while the Kazakh holiday calendar focuses on the connection of the pagan and Muslim principles. Typologically, similar elements of Slavic and Kazakh holidays include struc- tural relatedness, calendar confinement, similar archetypical rituals, and cer- emonial models. Slavic and Kazakh ethnic and cultural contacts are reflected in the joint celebrations, in interethnic borrowing practices, rituals, games, and in Russian and Kazakh song performances by representatives of different ethnic groups. Field observations of Kazakh folklorists suggest the continuing existence of joint Nauryz and Shrovetide celebration traditions. The folklore situation in Kazakhstan demonstrates both the different stages of closely related culture innovation of the Eastern Slavs and the typological relation- ship and bilateral borrowing through contact with unrelated Turkic ethnic groups. The typological and ethno-cultural parallels as well as positive features of this holiday make it a universal phenomenon important for all members of a social or ethnic group. -
