2H Press Kit En TWO HEADS Richard Palmer-James and Erich Schachtner first met about 10 years ago as members of a Bavarian blues-rock band. After 4 years with this sextet, the two musicians devoted themselves to their duo-programme Blues Meets Classical, playing unplugged instrumental music ranging from classical to folk to jazz. Some 90 concerts and a CD-release later, Erich and Richard are taking a new show on the road under the project name TWO HEADS, presenting songs composed during their recent years playing together, along with a few interpretations of pieces from Richard's decades of activity as a freelance songwriter. • Ecolyrics in Pop Music: a Review of Two Nature Songs
Language & Ecology 2016 www.ecoling.net/articles Ecolyrics in Pop Music: A Review of Two Nature Songs Amir Ghorbanpour [email protected] Ph.D. Student, Department of Linguistics Tarbiat Modarres University, Tehran, Iran Abstract This paper is an ecolinguistic analysis of the lyrics of two nature songs – coined in this paper as ‘eco-lyrics’. The aim was to analyse the underlying stories that lie behind the lyrics, and how they model the natural world. The two songs chosen were We Kill the World by Boney M. (1981) and Johnny Wanna Live by Sandra (1990). In particular, the use of metaphors and appraisal patterns in Boney M.’s song and the use of salience patterns (through personification, naming and activation) in Sandra’s – in terms of Stibbe’s (2015) general classification of the ‘stories we live by’ – were looked at, in order to shed light on how the more-than-human world is represented in each of these songs. Keywords: ecolinguistics, ecolyrics, nature songs, metaphor, salience Language & Ecology 2016 www.ecoling.net/articles 1. Introduction The relatively new discipline of ecolinguistics, as the name implies, aims at studying the interrelationship between language and ecology. Michael Halliday (1990), in his seminal work which is often credited with launching ecolinguistics as a new recognisable form of the ecological humanities (Stibbe, 2015: 83), provided linguists with the incentive to consider the ecological context and consequences of language. In his speech at the AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) conference in 1990, Halliday stressed ‘the connection between language on the one hand, and growthism, classism and speciesism on the other, admonishing applied linguists not to ignore the role of their object of study in the growth of environmental problems’ (Fill, 1998: 43).

Extracts from: TranergyTV Interview Peter Ries July 2013, Wiesbaden Miles: Welcome to tranergy.tv. T oday we´re once again on location in Wiesbaden and one can really enjoy the beautiful view here. Though we´re in the studio today. Now we´re going quite far back…you started your career in the early 80s as a singer. Do you still know the name Gilbert? Peter: No!..yeah..this is the sin of my youth, but it´s not really a sin, because I think it´s all a development and I started like that at that time. It was on a private party, when I was 16. There I “played” DJ and I sang to the records and a friend of my friends was a producer and he said “ You can sing well…wouldn´t you like to come into the studio?” and I said “Hmm…sinning…did you like it?” and he said “ well, yes…this it´s upgradeable!” I was quite curious at that time and I was already into music, since I started playing the piano with the age of 12. Then I studied music at the conservatory, church organ, harmonies and classical piano. So there has always been a connection. And when this producer asked if I wanted to try to sing I said yes and it became a little career with a record deal. Miles: What were your early musical inspira tions? Peter: Well I didn´t run free with my inspirations with my own projects and I even wasn´t allowed to but I loved to listen to Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd…this kind of music, these were my heroes.

  • Routledge, 2001. X, 278 Pp
Timothy D. Taylor. Strange Sounds: Music, Technology, and Culture. New York: Routledge, 2001. x, 278 pp. Reviewed by Albin J Zak III Strange Sounds is among the growing literature concerned with the inter face of technology and musical practice, reception, and use (referred to in this book, as in many others, as "production" and "consumption").1 More specifically, the author is concerned with the ways "that digital technology shapes the three areas that have historically been so affected by technol ogy: music production, storage/distribution, and consumption" (IS), with a particular focus on the latter two. The ability to capture sound as digital information is, of course, an outgrowth of analog sound recording, and is thus only the latest chapter in a history of technological evolution that has both shaped and been shaped by the forces of musical culture. The field of potential inquiry for such a project is vast, and from the complex of relevant topics Taylor takes up a subset focusing on "agency" and "ideolo gies of technology" (9), with the aim of probing the social dimensions of the music/ technology interface. What emerges is a somewhat idiosyncratic investigation that draws attention to several unlikely historical and aes thetic connections. There are, for example, two chapters devoted to so-called "space-age pop" of the 19S0s which, though a fascinating and in scholarly circles un der-reported topic, would seem to have little connection to digital music technology. Or so it appears from the technological and the musical evi dence. But the author is after something else here.

Please tell us about this, and how composing music helped you in a difficult situation. Marc: That’s very true. My older sister, Suzanne, was diagnosed with melanoma cancer in August of 2005 and passed away in February of 2006. It all happened very quickly and was absolutely devastating. The last few years of her life, Suzanne had taken up painting – acrylics and watercolors – and became quite skilled. She left behind over 200 paintings and the artwork has been a source of comfort to the entire family. Aside from her beauty, courage and selflessness as she battled the illness, her paintings are her lasting legacy. This got me thinking that I should follow in my sister’s footsteps and create my own artistic legacy. So, I decided to start composing. Writing music helped me by providing an outlet for my grief: at times an escape and at other times an expression of my sorrow. It also gave me something positive to pour my emotions into. The first song I wrote was a grieving song titled, Taken Away (track 7 on the album).
