The Compilation Toolchain Cross-Compilation for Embedded Systems Prof. Andrea Marongiu ([email protected]) Toolchain The toolchain is a set of development tools used in association with source code or binaries generated from the source code • Enables development in a programming language (e.g., C/C++) • It is used for a lot of operations such as a) Compilation b) Preparing Libraries Most common toolchain is the c) Reading a binary file (or part of it) GNU toolchain which is part of d) Debugging the GNU project • Normally it contains a) Compiler : Generate object files from source code files b) Linker: Link object files together to build a binary file c) Library Archiver: To group a set of object files into a library file d) Debugger: To debug the binary file while running e) And other tools The GNU Toolchain GNU (GNU’s Not Unix) The GNU toolchain has played a vital role in the development of the Linux kernel, BSD, and software for embedded systems. The GNU project produced a set of programming tools. Parts of the toolchain we will use are: -gcc: (GNU Compiler Collection): suite of compilers for many programming languages -binutils: Suite of tools including linker (ld), assembler (gas) -gdb: Code debugging tool -libc: Subset of standard C library (assuming a C compiler). -bash: free Unix shell (Bourne-again shell). Default shell on GNU/Linux systems and Mac OSX. Also ported to Microsoft Windows. -make: automation tool for compilation and build Program development tools The process of converting source code to an executable binary image requires several steps, each with its own tool. -

WinAppDbg Documentation Release 1.6 Mario Vilas Aug 28, 2019 Contents 1 Introduction 1 2 Programming Guide 3 i ii CHAPTER 1 Introduction The WinAppDbg python module allows developers to quickly code instrumentation scripts in Python under a Win- dows environment. It uses ctypes to wrap many Win32 API calls related to debugging, and provides a powerful abstraction layer to manipulate threads, libraries and processes, attach your script as a debugger, trace execution, hook API calls, handle events in your debugee and set breakpoints of different kinds (code, hardware and memory). Additionally it has no native code at all, making it easier to maintain or modify than other debuggers on Windows. The intended audience are QA engineers and software security auditors wishing to test or fuzz Windows applications with quickly coded Python scripts. Several ready to use tools are shipped and can be used for this purposes. Current features also include disassembling x86/x64 native code, debugging multiple processes simultaneously and produce a detailed log of application crashes, useful for fuzzing and automated testing. Here is a list of software projects that use WinAppDbg in alphabetical order: • Heappie! is a heap analysis tool geared towards exploit writing. It allows you to visualize the heap layout during the heap spray or heap massaging stage in your exploits. The original version uses vtrace but here’s a patch to use WinAppDbg instead. The patch also adds 64 bit support. • PyPeElf is an open source GUI executable file analyzer for Windows and Linux released under the BSD license. • python-haystack is a heap analysis framework, focused on classic C structure matching. -

Tutorial for VCS STEP 1: login to the Linux system on Linuxlab server. Start a terminal (the shell prompt). Make sure ese461 is presented when you execute this command. 1.Find the available modules 2.Make sure ese461 is presented 3.This command will set up the work environment for class ESE461 Fig. 2 Build work environment for class ESE461 using module 1 STEP 3: Getting started with Verilog • Creating a new folder (better if you have all the files for a project in a specific folder). • Enter into this new folder and start writing your Verilog script in a new file (.v file). Example code for modeling an counter is here • In addition to model code, Test Bench script has to be given in order to verify the functionality of your model (.v file). Example code of test bench for counter is here. Use gedit to edit the .v files (gedit is a commonly used GUI editor on Linux ) Fig. 3 Open gedit through teminal STEP 4: Compiling and simulating your code • In the terminal, change the directory to where your model and test bench files (Counter.v and Counter_tb.v) are present by using this command: cd <path> For example: cd ~/ESE461/VcsTutorial/ (Remark: ‘~’ means home directory on Linux) • Compile the files by typing in the terminal: vcs <file>.v <file_tb>.v In the above example, it should be: vcs Counter.v Counter_tb.v There should be no error presented in the terminal. -
