Narrative and non narrative films pdf Continue Cinema has become one of the most important forms of art in the last 100 years. While most viewers are a friendly fare characterized by a commitment to traditional narrative arcs, formulaic characters, and a particular genre, there is also a strong tradition in film to break the mould and show people something they have never seen before. Below are ten films that prove that non-narrative films can still provoke as much, if not more thought and emotional stimulation, that even the most manipulative plot of storytelling. 10. Decasia (Bill Morrison, 2002) Directed by Bill Morrison is a beautiful and deeply disturbing meditation on time, death and decay at once haunting and deeply moving, combining films at all stages of decomposition with a searing score from composer Michael Gordon to create a cinematic experience unlike anything before him. One might assume to describe this film as a non-narrative psychedelic horror with nitrates based on the film's stock of bubbling, distorting and eventually destroying the images it contains we are inadvertently forced to consider our own mortality in the process. See Decasia, if you have any interest in avant-garde cinema or no narrative cinema, this is arguably one of the best recordings in both genres. 9. Bodysong (Simon Pummell, 2003) Bodysong follows human life from conception to death and everything in between. Watching Bodysong as seeing his own life fast forward and life events conceptually in universally significant images, all accompanied by a hypnotic musical score from Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood. While it is devoid of traditional narrative, busy stock footage, microscopic photographs, pornographic sex scenes, and disturbing images of war and violence do seem to tell the story of collective human existence. The generalization of these images and the collage he created perfectly illustrate both the linguistic power of filmmaking and our common human experience, regardless of class, race, gender or geographical location. 8. Samsara (Ron Fricke, 2011) Samsara is a continuation of Ron Frick Barak's seminal masterpiece. This film uses Barack's timely message as a point of leap to decidedly darker thematic territory, exploring humanity through a juxtaposition of scenes of incredible natural and cultural beauty, as well as the economic and environmental consequences of the modern world. The word Samsara means wheel. Thus, locations, editing and cinematography all illustrate this theme of life, death and rebirth. Although Frick himself said that we just let the image guide flow, and then we started stringing the blocks together themed by a heavy hand in Samsara palpable, but nonetheless incredibly satisfying and at times deeply disturbing. 7. (E. Elias Merhinge, 1990) E. Elias Mehringe writes: and edits this experimental horror film featuring some of the most eerie, intense images of any movie... Never. The film's unique appearance, thanks to Merching's painstaking experiments with the negative supply of film used for shooting, goes through several different processes to collect its grainy, very contrasting images. Begotten is devoid of dialogue or any meaningful narrative drive. These themes are conveyed through the apparently gratuitous actions of the world's grotesque inhabitants, including the supposed god-like figure in the discovery disemboweling himself, only to be sexually pleasure by a then unnamed woman who is subsequently impregnated. The woman then wanders through a nightmarish, almost barren landscape replete with other strange creatures who may or may not want her dead. Begotten is not a carefree affair or for squeamish. 6. Baraka (Ron Fricke, 1992) Ron Fricke, cameraman and editor of the similarly thematic Koyaanisqatsi takes the lead in Barak's epic visual poem. Here we are moved from tribal cultures, religious ceremonies and tranquil natural beauty to teeming metropolises, bubbling industries and scenes of intense poverty and human suffering. Baraka is one of the best non-narrative films of all time because of the incredible power he manages to convey without the slightest dialogue or traditional narrative. Even 20 years after its initial release, Baraka stands as a kind of grandiose statement about humanity, embracing the best and worst that we are capable of. As Roger Ebert once wrote, If a man sends another Voyager to distant stars and can carry only one movie on board, this film could become Barack.
