This paper looks at how the three come together in YouTube video bloggers’ promotion of queer sex-positive ideology. Sex positivism is the belief that all safe, consensual sex is healthy, while queer theory emphasizes the diversity and instability of sex and gender identities. -

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Simon Says by Gillian Colbert High Court: Florida Death Penalty System Is Unconstitutional. WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) – The Governor, his attorney general, and court officials across the state are all reviewing the decision from the high court that could drastically change Florida’s death penalty system. In an 8-1 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the system Florida courts have used to put inmates on death row for decades, saying it wrongly gives judges more authority than the jury. The ruling centers around Timothy Hurst who murdered his manager at a restaurant in Pensacola back in 1998. In a 7-5 vote jurors voted in favor of death, and the judge made the final decision to give him the death penalty. In the majority opinion, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote, “The Sixth Amendment requires a jury, not a judge, to find each fact necessary to impose a sentence of death. A jury’s mere recommendation is not enough.” Attorney General Pam Bondi issued the following statement regarding Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling: “In light of today’s United States Supreme Court decision holding Florida’s capital sentencing procedure unconstitutional, the state will need to make changes to its death-sentencing statutes. I will work with state lawmakers this legislative session to ensure that those changes comply with the Court’s latest decision. The impact of the Court’s ruling on existing death sentences will need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.” “I don’t think it’s a great surprise this decision came down putting Florida in line with other jurisdictions,” said attorney and former state and federal prosecutor David Weinstein. -

The accessible and engaging format of the YouTube video has helped some sex educators achieve Internet fame among a mass audience of users devoted to watching their web series and interacting with them on social media. Using two sex education channels (Laci Green’s Sex Plus and Lindsey Doe’s Sexplanations) as case studies, this article investigates the ways in which YouTube stardom shapes the production of and engagement with online sex education videos. In doing so, the article uncovers how Internet fame helps to create a brand of sex education salient to audiences across media platforms that rely on the illusion of face-to-face interaction, the development of an authoritative yet approachable identity, and the cultivation of a virtual community. However, with the rise of digital technology, the ability of adults to regulate young people’s access to information about sexuality has minimized significantly. Yet the curriculum in sexuality education classrooms continues to be debated while little research has been done examining the easily-accessible information that lives on the Internet. This thesis analyzes two popular sexuality education channels on YouTube, sexplanations and lacigreen, with subscriber counts ranging from nearly half a million to over 1.5 million. -

Laughing at American Democracy: Citizenship and the Rhetoric of Stand-Up Satire
LAUGHING AT AMERICAN DEMOCRACY: CITIZENSHIP AND THE RHETORIC OF STAND-UP SATIRE Matthew R. Meier A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Ellen Gorsevski, Advisor Khani Begum Graduate Faculty Representative Alberto González Michael L. Butterworth, Co-Advisor © 2014 Matthew R. Meier All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Michael L. Butterworth and Ellen Gorsevski, Co-Advisors With the increasing popularity of satirical television programs such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, it is evident that satirical rhetoric has unique and significant influence on contemporary American culture. The appeal of satirical rhetoric, however, is not new to the American experience, but its preferred rhetorical form has changed over time. In this dissertation, I turn to the development of stand-up comedy in America as an example of an historical iteration of popular satire in order to better understand how the rhetoric of satire manifests in American culture and how such a rhetoric can affect the democratic nature of that culture. The contemporary form of stand-up comedy is, historically speaking, a relatively new phenomenon. Emerging from the post-war context of the late 1950s, the form established itself as an enduring force in American culture in part because it married the public’s desire for entertaining oratory and political satire. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a generation of stand- up comedians including Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Dick Gregory laid the foundation for contemporary stand-up comedy by satirizing politics, racism, and social taboos.
