X. Unfortunately, 0 the set T op∗(S ;X) of points of X determines no topological information about the space. The same is true in the homotopy category. The set of `points' of X in this case is the set 0 π0X = [S ;X] = [∗;X]0 (1.1) of its path components. As expected, this pointed set is a very coarse invariant of the pointed homotopy type of X. How might we squeeze out some more useful information from it? 0 One approach is to back up a step and return to the set T op∗(S ;X) before quotienting out the homotopy relation. As we saw in the first lecture, there is extra information in this set in the form of track homotopies which is discarded upon passage to [S0;X]. Recall our slogan: it matters not only that a map is null homotopic, but also the manner in which it becomes so. So, taking a cue from algebraic geometry, let us try to understand the automorphism group of the zero map S0 ! ∗ ! X with regards to this extra structure. If we vary the basepoint of X across all its points, maybe it could be possible to detect information not visible on the level of π0. -

We classify the finite groups which are realised as subgroups of the sphere 2 braid group Bn.S /. Such groups must be of cohomological period 2 or 4. Depend- ing on the value of n, we show that the following are the maximal finite subgroups of 2 Bn.S /: Z2.n 1/ ; the dicyclic groups of order 4n and 4.n 2/; the binary tetrahedral group T ; the binary octahedral group O ; and the binary icosahedral group I . We give geometric as well as some explicit algebraic constructions of these groups in 2 Bn.S / and determine the number of conjugacy classes of such finite subgroups. We 2 also reprove Murasugi’s classification of the torsion elements of Bn.S / and explain 2 how the finite subgroups of Bn.S / are related to this classification, as well as to the 2 lower central and derived series of Bn.S /. 20F36; 20F50, 20E45, 57M99 1 Introduction The braid groups Bn of the plane were introduced by E Artin in 1925[2;3]. Braid groups of surfaces were studied by Zariski[41]. They were later generalised by Fox to braid groups of arbitrary topological spaces via the following definition[16]. Motivation An important fact in the cohomology theory of finite groups is that if G is a finite group then Hn(G; M) is killed by #G for any n > 0 and any G-module M. This is not at all obvious from the abstract definition (via injective resolutions, say), nor even from the viewpoint of the explicit \bar resolution" method of computing group cohomology. In this handout we present the proof of this fundamental fact as a marvelous concrete application of the abstract fact that erasable δ-functors are universal (Grothendieck's conceptualization of the \degree-shifting" method that had long been used in earlier versions of cohomology theories throughout algebra and topology). Before we turn to the proof, we record a remarkable consequence: Theorem 1.1. If G is finite and M is a G-module that is finitely generated as an abelian group then Hn(G; M) is finite for all n > 0. Proof. From the bar resolution, we see that Hn(G; M) is finitely generated as an abelian group, as the terms of the bar resolution complex are the abelian groups Map(Gj;M) which are visibly finitely generated (as each Gj is a finite set). Hence, since it is also killed by #G, it must be finite! Actually, the finiteness of such higher cohomologies can be seen in an entirely different way, at the cost of losing the precise information of being annihilated by the specific integer #G (which is very useful in some applications). -

A Symplectic Resolution for the Binary Tetrahedral Group
A SYMPLECTIC RESOLUTION FOR THE BINARY TETRAHEDRAL GROUP MANFRED LEHN & CHRISTOPH SORGER Abstract. We describe an explicit symplectic resolution for the quo- tient singularity arising from the four-dimensional symplectic represen- ation of the binary tetrahedral group. Let G be a nite group with a complex symplectic representation V . The symplectic form σ on V descends to a symplectic form σ¯ on the open regular part of V=G. A proper morphism f : Y ! V=G is a symplectic resolution if Y is smooth and if f ∗σ¯ extends to a symplectic form on Y . It turns out that symplectic resolutions of quotient singularities are a rare phenomenon. By a theorem of Verbitsky [9], a necessary condition for the existence of a symplectic resolution is that G be generated by symplectic reections, i.e. by elements whose x locus on V is a linear subspace of codimension 2. Given an arbitrary complex representation V0 of a nite group G, we obtain a symplectic representation on ∗, where ∗ denotes the contragradient V0 ⊕V0 V0 representation of V0. In this case, Verbitsky's theorem specialises to an earlier theorem of Kaledin [7]: For ∗ to admit a symplectic resolution, the V0 ⊕ V0 =G action of G on V0 should be generated by complex reections, in other words, V0=G should be smooth. The complex reection groups have been classied by Shephard and Todd [8], the symplectic reection groups by Cohen [2]. The list of Shephard and Todd contains as a sublist the nite Coxeter groups. The question which of these groups G ⊂ Sp(V ) admits a symplectic res- olution for V=G has been solved for the Coxeter groups by Ginzburg and Kaledin [3] and for arbitrary complex reection groups most recently by Bellamy [1]. -

Schneider Abstract The largest finite subgroup of O(4) is the non-crystallographic Coxeter group W(H4) of order 14,400. Its derived subgroup is the largest finite subgroup W(H4)/Z2 of SO(4) of order 7200. Moreover, up to conjugacy, it has five non-normal maximal subgroups of orders 144, two 240, 400 and 576. Two groups [W(H2) × W(H2)]Z4 and W(H3) × Z2 possess non- crystallographic structures with orders 400 and 240 respectively. The groups of orders 144, 240 and 576 are the extensions of the Weyl groups of the root systems of SU(3) × SU(3), SU(5) and SO(8) respectively. For this, L/K does not need to have finite degree. For example, for a finite field Fp with p elements (p a prime number), the algebraic closure Fp is Galois over Fp, and has infinite degree. We define in this general situation Definition 1.1 Let L/K be a Galois extension. Then the Galois group of L over K is defined as Gal(L/K) := AutK (L) = {σ : L → L | σ field automorphisms, σ(x) = x for all x ∈ K}. But the main theorem of Galois theory (correspondence between all subgroups of Gal(L/K) and all intermediate fields of L/K) only holds for finite extensions! Introduction (Lecture 1) February 3, 2009 One of the basic problems of manifold topology is to give a classification for manifolds (of some fixed dimension n) up to diffeomorphism. In the best of all possible worlds, a solution to this problem would provide the following: (i) A list of n-manifolds fMαg, containing one representative from each diffeomorphism class. (ii) A procedure which determines, for each n-manifold M, the unique index α such that M ' Mα. In the case n = 2, it is possible to address these problems completely: a connected oriented surface Σ is classified up to homeomorphism by a single integer g, called the genus of Σ. For each g ≥ 0, there is precisely one connected surface Σg of genus g up to diffeomorphism, which provides a solution to (i). Given an arbitrary connected oriented surface Σ, we can determine its genus simply by computing its Euler characteristic χ(Σ), which is given by the formula χ(Σ) = 2 − 2g: this provides the procedure required by (ii). Given a solution to the classification problem satisfying the demands of (i) and (ii), we can extract an algorithm for determining whether two n-manifolds M and N are diffeomorphic. Namely, we apply the procedure (ii) to extract indices α and β such that M ' Mα and N ' Mβ: then M ' N if and only if α = β. For example, suppose that n = 2 and that M and N are connected oriented surfaces with the same Euler characteristic. Then the classification of surfaces tells us that there is a diffeomorphism φ from M to N. -

It is suited for formalising mathematical defini- tions and theorems, which can help bridge the gap between the abstract aspect of mathematics and the practical part of informatics. My project focuses on using Lean to formalise some essential notions of group cohomology, such as the 0th and 1st cohomology groups, as well as the long exact sequence. This can be seen as a performance test for the new theorem prover, but most im- portantly as an addition to the open source, as group cohomology has yet to be formalised in Lean.
