The annual school magazine is the collection of our memories for the year enabling us to preserve and reflect for generations to come. It is also a tribute to all who made a contribution to this wonderful school of ours. It goes without saying that we age year by year but in a school as young as ours it is very exciting to see the sustained growth and realisation of dreams large and small.

Together we make PV great and this collection of reports, photos and memories now forms part of our history.

Warm PV greetings. David Schenck

Principal: Mr David Schenck Governing Body

The role of the Governing body has come under scrutiny this year with the possible amendment of the School Law. We were encouraged with the support we have received, objecting against the amendment of the law.

Parel Vallei is a proud community school. We are proud to be the best academically. We are proud to be the best in cultural activities. We are proud to be the best on the sport fields. But above all we are proud to produce the most balanced learners in the . This yearbook is again testimony of the balanced learners that Parel Vallei produces.

Governing Body: Dr I Malherbe I would like to extend my thanks to all staff, learners, parents, members of the SGB, all sub-committees and all those who have encouraged our vibrant community and helped make this year memorable.

Trotse Parel Valleier

THANK YOU YVONNE HANDLEY. THANK YOU FOR 24 YEARS OF BRILLIANT SERVICE TO . Yvonne, or Mrs Handley as she is affectionately known to the learners, started at Parel Vallei High School in 1990 when the school was only four years old. She worked with and served loyally under all three headmasters, Mr De Vries, Mr Gouws and Mr Schenck. Mrs Handley retired in September 2005 as the headmaster's secretary and in February 2009 Mr Gouws approached her to come and assist in the LA office for two months. Yvonne agreed but stressed it would only be for the two months. She was so refreshed from her few years away and just slotted back in admirably. The thief

To me, literature is a thief. It is a gleaming, scheming, all- in the stifling silence. An ominous creaking becomes louder knowing, sly trickster of a thief who appears in my mind wearing and louder… ragged beige and black literature livery. The epic tales of heroes and adventurers form his sagging shirt; stories of CRASH! An almighty scream smashes through the stale air suffering in silence and screams of sadness make up his torn and a golden chandelier made of post-book despair splinters trousers, held up by a belt of adjectives describing a thousand through my soaked soul. I draw my weak legs up and irrational forms of fear. He wears an aged hat made up of musty pages sobs wrack through my pathetic body. Through my damp of falling in love and laughing hysterically and in his nimble curtain of hair and swimming eyes I see a golden glow and wrinkled fingers he clutches an all-powerful, incandescent key. crawl over the textbooks and timetables for a closer look. It This sly imp is a thief of my time. is a golden keyhole shining victoriously and I slowly start to smile. The thief will be back again soon and I cannot wait. There is no century, realm or universe that this devious pixie cannot unpick with his stolen key. He skips along the rough by Catherine McNauhgt-Davies (2016) winding roads in my mind, cackling wildly as he tosses glowing seeds along the wayside. These golden beans spring up almost instantaneously, in the form of a deep-rooted longing for the land of literature. And just like that, the thief appears with a Fairy Lights mischievous glint in his dark owl eyes and the golden key begins to turn… knelt down beside the battle plan; the glistening morning dew slowly seeping through my canvas pants. A light cool My responsibilities zoom out of the battered windows, like breeze passed by, rustling the brownish gold leaves on wild birds bursting free from a rusty cage and the thief flings Autumn trees. A beam of light filtered through the rust coloured my plans out like a pail of filthy water. He ransacks my sense canopy. Inside this beam danced specks of dust, swirling on of structure and smashes my internal clock with a hammer as forest air. The sun was scalding my neck through the small heavy as a hundred antique tomes. Only one thing remains chink in the wall of leaves above, and the forest was silent. unbroken: a book burning brightly in the midst of the destruction. The thief perches on it like a guileful raven and No bird tweeted. No squirrel squeaked. Although the forest reaches out his adventure-gnarled hands. “The key has turned,” was teeming, no signs of life came from it; as if preparing for he whispers wickedly. the massacre and destruction that was soon to come. My companions stood around me like statues guarding a sacred Without warning, I slip under the cool surface of a book cover, keep. "Well?" one spoke. 'When do we go?' The crunch of leaves under our soft-soled boots shimmering nouns. I splash delightedly with the sparkling mixed with the clinking of gear was hypnotic. I clashed blades with a beast of a man with broken teeth and a bloody maw. Steel sparked on steel in flashes of lightning I am hauled soaking wet out of the ocean by a wrinkled, across silvery, metal skies. crooked hand. I look around and see that I am back in my mundane mental room of responsibilities and everything is A cut and a slash and the beast-like man fell to the red-soaked repairing itself far too quickly, as if by some cruel magic. The room becomes stuffier I looked up to see his face: a dirty, grimy thing radiating glee. as project forms swoop across the tiny window, blocking out I slid off his blade and fell to the floor. ADVANCED EDUCATION AT PAREL VALLEI HIGH SCHOOL In 1998 advanced education in the form of Cambridge A levels was started at Parel Vallei High School. The A levels proved to be so successful that in 2011 the Parel Vallei Advanced Education Trust added Advanced Programme Mathematics (AP Maths) to its programme. The learners who participate in these programmes benefit greatly from them and many of the learners have gone on to be extremely successful in their careers. Many of them attribute their success to having studied advanced education at the school. Presently the Trust offers AP Maths, AP English and A level Maths as advanced education at the school.

Matric learners who participate in the Advanced Education courses are given the opportunity to visit Sutherland for a weekend trip in the June/July holiday.

On the Saturday afternoon we visit the SALT observatory for a guided tour. In the evening we do stargazing with a local astronomer Jurg Wagener in the town. We sleep over at the Sutherland Hotel on Saturday evening. Supper on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning before we depart for home by bus is at the Sutherland Hotel. We make a stop for refreshments on the way there at the beautiful town of Matjiesfontein.

A most memorable and extremely cold experience.

This year's Paul Bothner Music service award was also presented to the 8 matric music learners who formed the core of this band elevating it to its present excellence. A big vote of thanks to the one and only Mr Combe for his continued inspiration in leading this band.

This year our Big Band attended the week-long Grahamstown Youth Jazz Festival where they were given the opportunity to perform, attend workshops, and lots and lots of concerts. The purpose of this festival is to “set the stage for a national search for the finest young jazz talent in the country. Our own Matthew Marais and Luke Verrezen were selected and auditioned for the National Youth Jazz Band, and got the chance to play their hearts out for a prestigious place in this national band. Although they were not chosen in the end, the experience of being part of this process was in itself the opportunity. The enthusiasm with which the Band returned from Grahamstown is still very measurable.

Interact is Rotary International's service club for the youth. Parel Vallei's club strives to make a difference in our local community through various fundraising activities, drives and outreach programmes. These activities help learners develop social awareness, personal integrity, respect and empathy for others and contribute to an understanding of individual responsibility and hard work. In 2017 Helderberg Sunrise Rotary once again sponsored four of our learners to attend RYLA camps. These camps focus on the development of leadership potential. Our Interact members make such an impression at these camps that they are often invited back as team leaders, and this year has been no different! Some of our projects included visits to the Animal Welfare Society, Robari Lodge, Vonke Park, Gabriella Centre, Chilanga Riding School for the Disabled and different preschools and crèches. Interact also organised a toy drive, a dog food drive and raised funds for HART (Helderberg Animal Rescue Team). We volunteered at numerous fundraisers such as Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club's Race Night, Helderberg Hospice's Cycling for Life and Aanhouwen's annual Family Market. We also supported Casual Day and the Community Sleep Out for the Night Shelter. The proceeds from our weekly cupcake sales have been donated to the Gabriella Centre, as has become tradition. We have also made systematic progress with our Tops and Tags project. Interact Committee BACK: C du Plessis; M Smet; R Meyer We look forward to building on the success of 2017. CYCLING /FIETSRY Another great year for PV cycling, with our learners excelling in a highly competitive sport. 2017 started with a bang with our learners taking part in the 24hr relay endurance event at Oak Valley and Carla Steyn taking 1st place in the road race and time trial at the WC Road Championships.

In April we hosted a hugely successful cycling camp in Greyton which gave our cyclists an opportunity to bond as a team and hone their skills on the challenging trails that surround the town.

With the highly anticipated Spur Schools League starting in June a Cycling Big Brag was held at the school to build “gees” before the 1st race of 4 events which was held at our very own track at Southey Vines. At the end of the 4 events PV stood on top of the podium in the Mixed and Girls categories and the boys coming 2nd to Paul Roos. On top of this fantastic achievement PV won the spirit prize for the school which showed the most “gees” over the 4 events. Due to this success 12 of our learners took part in the National Finals of the Spur School league held in Magaliesburg in October. In 2017 our team claimed a 4th place in the Mixed category and 3rd in the Boys category at the National final!! In August on the tour to Pearson our learners dominated the whole event and we won every race.

We salute our learners who have ridden their hearts out and showed guts and Fietsry Spur Schools MTB League National Final determination beyond their years of age. We are so proud of you! Parel Vallei het 'n suksesvolle swemseisoen beleef. Due to the fires in January impacting the swimming pools' water quality, the grade 8 gala had to be rescheduled to a morning gala. Although this limited the amount of spectators, the efficient organization by the prefects combined with irrepressible grade 8 enthusiasm once again made the gala a very enjoyable event. The interhouse gala was once again characterized by maximum learner participation. Our local Helderberg Tri-angular gala was tightly contested with Parel Vallei beating Somerset College and Curro . A successful swimming camp at Curro Hermanus gave swimmers the opportunity to improve times and Interskoleswemspan bond as a team. Two swimmers qualified for level 2 and one obtained medals at the regional championiship gala. Six swimmers qualified to compete at level 3 SA Regional Championship and three achieved medals at this gala. Two of our swimmers also excelled in open water swimming. The school's cricketing history began in 1987 with one team in the WP Schools' League and Fanie Janse van Rensburg as the first ever 1st XI coach.

In 2017, we boast seven teams playing in the Boland Weekday & Saturday league.

Two yearly cricket tours kick off the season with PV's Under 14 and 1st XV touring to Worcester and Mossel Bay in October respectively.

A season of mixed fortunes across the board, ended with 2 from 4 wins over Somerset College, our traditional derby rivals.
