For our lovely 11-year-old Winnie Foster, that proves to be a very difficult question. It’s not an easy question About Tuck Everlasting and 11 for any of us. As I grow in age and (hopefully!) grace and watch the challenges Its Creators my own children face in the current world, I wouldn’t want to be their age again. If I had frozen at 11 years old, would I still be reading all night under the covers 12 Director’s Notes and waking up to the challenges of being the big sister in charge? I realize that I like becoming a little wiser each year, with a little more perspective and a gradual increase in the choices I get to make about who I am and want to be. But then I notice that I don’t walk as fast, or do math in my head; I realize that age has robbed me of some quickness and innocence, and I miss that little girl who thought she could change the world. Winnie’s decision isn’t easy or obvious—but it is truly thought provoking, provid- ing all of us an opportunity to take stock of what’s important. What does she decide? If you are reading this as you wait for the show, you’ll find out very soon! In the meantime, let me ask you: If you had the chance to live forever, would you take it? THE WHEEL OF LIFE “It’s a wheel, Winnie. Everything’s a wheel, turning and turning, never stopping… People always coming in new, always growing and changing, and always moving on.” presents – Angus Tuck, from Natalie Babbitt’s Tuck Everlasting At TheatreWorks we consider our holiday shows a special gift to our community, a chance to share the joy, energy, and good will of the season with our friends throughout the Bay Area. This year’s gift is a UCK VERLASTING time-traveling journey to an enchanted wood alive with possibilities: growing up, love, maturity, and even T E immortality. Full of mystery, chicanery, and wisdom, Tuck Everlasting invites us to discover the circle of life, a wheel that tonight we may choose to ride or to abandon. Adapted from Natalie Babbitt’s popular Book by Claudia Shear & Tim Federle 1975 novel, this glorious musical asks us all a haunting question: “If you could live forever, would you?”

Y G A N O Tuck Everlasting the musical began life at TheatreWorks in 2010. Composer Chris Miller and lyricist Music by Chris Miller

T E R Nathan Tysen joined our annual Writers’ Retreat with a special project—a new musical. They wrote two captivating songs that week, “Top of the World” and “My Most Beautiful Day,” and shared them with a room full of Lyrics by Nathan Tysen entranced TheatreWorks supporters. You’ll hear those songs today, seven years later. That workshop launched the show on a journey to Broadway, and launched my dream that it would one day come to TheatreWorks. Based on the novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt I saw Tuck at Broadway’s in 2016. The music was astonishing, full of country guitars and backwoods energy. Focused on young, spirited Winnie Foster, the story was tender and captivating; even the lemon-hued villain was Directed by Robert Kelley hilarious. When I heard the pivotal song, “The Wheel,” the inspiring truth of Tuck Everlasting overwhelmed me. I knew it would bring the joy and light of the holidays to TheatreWorks. Musical Direction by William Liberatore Tuck asks us to consider life as a whole—birth and death, good and evil, love and family—and determine its value. Many Choreographer Alex Perez religions accept the progress of life, while postulating an everlasting future: in heaven, in paradise, in rebirth. But what if you could live forever in the present? Endless excitement and opportunity, or merely endless repetition? As we contemplate SScenic Designer Joe Ragey this season of joy and fulfillment, it is a choice full of both possibility and question. What would you choose? Costume Designer Fumiko Bielefeldt To the warmth of this holiday season, we add the love of music, the ring of laughter, and the dreams of youth. We offer Lighting Designer Pamila Z. 12 THEATREWORKS Director’s Notes by Artistic Director Robert Kelley

Based on the novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt I saw Tuck at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre in 2016. As we contemplate Scenic Designer Joe Ragey this season of joy and fulfillment, it is a choice full of both possibility and question. What would you choose? Costume Designer Fumiko Bielefeldt To the warmth of this holiday season, we add the love of music, the ring of laughter, and the dreams of youth. We offer LLighting Designer Pamila Z. Gray a festive toast to everyone in our extended theatre family: May the wheel of life always turn your way.
