The study identified most of all the known rivers in Imo State and provided information like relief, topography and other geographical features of the major rivers which are crucial to aid water management for a sustainable water infrastructure in the communities of the watershed. The rivers and lakes are classified into five watersheds (river basins) such as Okigwe watershed, Mbaise / Mbano watershed, Orlu watershed, Oguta watershed and finally, Owerri watershed. The knowledge of the river basins in Imo State will help analyze the problems involved in water resources allocation and to provide guidance for the planning and management of water resources in the state for sustainable development. [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Open dumpsite is the most common way to eliminate solid urban wastes in this part of the world. An important problem associated to landfills and open dumpsite is the production of leachates. The leachates from these dumpsites have many toxic substances, which may adversely affect the environmental health. Thus in order to have a better management of characteristics of Ihiagwa-Nekede waste dump leachates, representative leachate samples were collected and analyzed for Physico-chemical properties and levels of heavy metals in them. Results indicate pH7.38, temperature 28.30 ℃ - 28.40℃, total dissolved solid 124.01mg/l-125.45mg/l, magnesium hardness 4.40mg/l-7.32mg/l, sulphate 3.60mg/l- 3.70mg/l, and nitrate 27.00mg/l-27.60mg/l. Other parameters indicated as follows Conductivity1910휇푠/푐푚-1930.00 휇푠/푐푚, total chloride 891.72mg/l-891.74mg/l, carbonate 1708.00mg/l-1904.00mg/l, Ammonia 9.39mg/l-9.40mg/l, calcium hardness 373.17mg/l- 375.61mg/l, total solid 2423.00mg/l-2454.00mg/l, phosphate 13.52mg/l-13.54mg/l. -

Soil samples were collected from 12 locations across three regions of Imo State (Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu), using completely randomized design. Samples were analysed for erodibility indices: modified clay ratio (MCR), clay ratio (CR), dispersion ratio (DR), and erosion ratio (ER), alongside selected physicochemical properties. Results indicated that the soils are predominantly sand. Soils of Owerri region are loamy sand texture, while Okigwe and Orlu regions are Sandy loam and Sand textured respectively. Bulk density of soils ranged from 1.50Mg/m3 1.81Mg/m3, while soil organic matter (SOM) averages 2.27% for Owerri and Orlu, and 0.92% for Okigwe respectively. MCR varied across the various locations in the order of Orlu (65.23 80.01) > Okigwe (43.11 55.30) > Owerri (15.20 35.65) regions. Least DR (0.58) and ER (0.44) were recorded in Owerri region, while highest values of 0.99 and 0.91 were recorded in Orlu region. A simulated rainfall intensity of 165mm/hr resulted in 1.2 ton/ha and 6.6 ton/ha annual soil loss for Owerri and Orlu respectively. -

The objective of this study was to ascertain the knowledge and practice of food hygiene among food vendors in Ihiagwa, Owerri-West L.G.A. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used in this study as a quantitative research approach. 221 food vendors were selected using the stratified sampling technique. Data was collected with the use of a questionnaire and also with observations of general hygiene and cleanliness. Data was captured in Excel sheet and imported into SPSS version 20.0 for analysis. The results of this study showed that most of the food vendors 99(44.5%) were between 30-39 years of age. Females recorded 166(75%) while males had 55(25%); 183(82.8%) reported that they have not attended any food hygiene training; only 28(12.7%) of the food vendors reported that they always cover their hair while serving food; 188(85.1%) reported that their food premises have not been visited by environmental health officers, only 51(23.1%) of the food vendors said that they go for routine medical examinations and 5(2.3%) said that well water was their main source of water supply. -

Among the poor in developing countries, up to 20% of an infant's life experience may include diarrhea. This problem is spatially related to the lack of potable water at different sites. This project used risk analysis (RA) methods and geographic information system (GIS) technologies to evaluate the health impact of water source. Maps of Imo State, Nigeria were converted into digital form using ARC/INFO GIS software, and the resulting coverages included geology, hydrology, towns, and villages. A total of 11,537 diarrheal cases were reported. Thirty-nine water sources were evaluated. A computer modeling approach called probabilistic layer analysis (PLA) spatially displayed the water source at layers of geology, hydrology, population, environmental pollution, and electricity according to a color-coded ®ve-point ranking. The water sources were categorized into A, B, and C based on the cumulative scores , 10 for A, 10±19 for B, and . 19 for C. T-test showed revealed signi®cant differences in diarrheal disease incidence between categories A, B, and C with mean 6 SEM values of 1.612 6 0.325, 6.257 6 0.408, and 15.608 6 2.151, respectively.
