Belmont Stakes, First Established in 1867, Is the Longest Running of the Triple Crown Events, and One of the Oldest Stakes Races in North America THE BELMONT Legacy in the Making STAKES The Belmont Stakes, first established in 1867, is the longest running of the Triple Crown events, and one of the oldest stakes races in North America. The 147th Belmont Stakes was run on Saturday, June 6, 2015, and American Pharoah won the race, becoming only the 12th horse in history to win the Triple Crown and the first in 37 years. Following this historic race, The Legacy Lab spoke to Chris Kay, CEO and President of the New York Racing Association (which runs thoroughbred racing at New York’s three major tracks, including Belmont). In this Legacy in the Making interview, Chris talks about how he balances a respect for the traditions of Belmont with a need to reframe horse racing as modern and relevant to a younger generation. Today, the Belmont Stakes is run by the New York Racing Association (NYRA). The NYRA was created in 1955 as a not-for-profit organization. That said, we are a not-for-profit that has been at the cornerstone of the horse racing industry in New York for a long while, contributing heavily to an industry that generates an eco- nomic impact of more than $2 billion annually and adds over 17,000 related jobs to the state of New York. Before the NYRA existed, there were four different entities that owned individual local racetracks, which they later contributed to form the basis of our racing asso- ciation. Under the NYRA, the four tracks became three: the majestic Belmont Park where Triple Crown champions are made; the Saratoga Race Course, one of the oldest sporting facilities in America, which has been described by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 10 Can you tell us about the origins horse racing. New York State Racing Fan Advisory Council Patrick Connors, Chair Kelly Young Michael Amo, Vice-Chair Michael Mills Allan Carter July 2, 2014 Christopher Kay President and CEO The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) 2150 Hempstead Turnpike Elmont, NY 11003 Dear President Kay, As representatives of New York’s diverse array of racing fans, we are compelled to share with you the serious concerns that have arisen with regards to the June 7, 2014 Belmont Stakes Day experience. We are sure you and your executive team have reviewed the day’s experience. The Council wishes to bring to you direct feedback from New York fans in hopes that it might assist and supplement your analysis. The matters addressed below, which range from overall poor customer service issues to potentially dangerous public safety concerns, were witnessed by members of the Council first-hand, communicated to us by other fans who attended, and widely documented in the media. The sheer volume of missteps throughout the day raise serious questions regarding NYRA’s pre-event planning and overall strategy for conducting the event. The Council, and any reasonable fan, understands an event of such magnitude – with more than 100,000 fans in attendance – will inevitably have logistical issues and areas in which to improve for the future. Yet, given the recent history of similarly large crowds at the event over the last 13 years, the hosts should have been far better prepared to accommodate fans attending this year’s Belmont Stakes Day. Our charge is to make the sport more appealing to new and existing fans.
