When Jesus heard of the death of , he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

It is important to consider where this Gospel In your daily life are there moments where continues from. The degree of intimacy with love is more evident in some virtues than in others. But with care, more than with any other virtue, its identification with love is unmistakable. When people care for one another, ministering to each other’s needs as a mother cares for her new baby, a doctor cares for a sick patient, or a teacher cares for a struggling student, the connection between love and virtue is evident. I encourage you during the next week to do one act of caring a day. Show someone new every day that you care about them. You can do this by asking how their day is going, offering to help a friend with homework, by being a good friend, or by being a good child to your parents.

Dear Heavenly Father, allow us to be like Your Son, Jesus Christ. Please grant us the courage to express Your greatest gift, that of love, to all those around us. Keep us strong and diligent, and keep us safe from sloth and laziness, that we may stay fervent in living Your will. Amen.

3 Jesus Walks on the Water Week A-19 Matthew 14:22-23

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

1. Explore It!

Many times in the Bible, those who have followed Jesus have expressed doubt in him. This is shown when Sarah and Abraham fail to believe God will give them a son in their old age. When God made his covenant with the couple, He promised them a son and numerous descendants. The two did not believe in God’s promise initially, and God asked, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14) Thomas, one of the Lord’s Apostles, also demonstrated doubt. After the , the other Apostles came to Thomas to tell him that they had seen the Risen Lord. “So the other disciples said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe’ ” (John 20:25). However, when God showed His power to all of these individuals by giving Abraham and Sarah a son and allowing Thomas to touch His wounds, their faith grew tremendously. When Jesus walked on water, He was showing His great power, yet Peter still doubted. Only when Jesus saved him did Peter have true faith. Doubt in God is a normal experience, for even Biblical figures had their moments of doubt. The important thing is that all of those mentioned-Abraham, Sarah, Thomas, and Peter, all in the end had tremendous and unwavering faith in God despite their doubt.

4 2. Connect It!

Trust is one of the hardest things to develop in life for many of us. We’ve learned to trust God, our parents, our friends, and many people around us. Do we completely trust God in everything or have we failed to trust God at times? At first, Peter put his trust in God. He got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened. Have we ever behaved similar to Peter when we don’t completely trust God? We may have started to trust God at the beginning but when facing some trials on our life journey, we immediately give up our trust in God. Let us remind ourselves to cry out to God to save us when we’ve failed to trust Him, just like Saint Peter cried out to God to save him when he began to sink while walking toward Jesus. Do you have some U.S. coins with you right now? Take a look at one of them and what do you see? Do you see the words, “IN GOD WE TRUST” imprinted on the coin? Let us imprint the same words, “IN GOD WE TRUST” on our heart and practice that principle daily.

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! PETER’S CONFESSION ABOUT JESUS

WEEK A-21 Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

1 EXPLORE IT!

Today’s Gospel reading establishes a couple big moments in the Church’s history. First, it shows that the Catholic Church was created by Jesus and entrusted to Peter to oversee. Here, Jesus clearly gives His authority to Peter, along with the future of the Church. The Catholic Church today can trace its line of priests back to this moment of the Gospel. Second, the words “bind and loose” establish the sacrament of Reconciliation. Peter and his successors were given the power to forgive sins in Jesus’ name. “Whoever is excluded from communion, will be excluded from communion with God; whoever is received anew into communion, God will welcome back into his” (CCC 1445). Jesus shows here that the Church and all of her priests on Earth are representatives of His voice in Heaven, and that reconciliation with the Church is the same as reconciliation with God.

2 CONNECT IT!

Have you ever wondered why we have so many Christian denominations and churches? Have you ever wondered which one is the “right” one? God is saying in this Gospel reading that the one true Church is the one that He founded and entrusted to Peter to oversee. God gave Peter and his successors the authority to guard His church on Earth, and all Catholic churches today can trace their heritage, priests, and traditions back to this moment. Other churches trace their origins to men like Luther, Calvin, or Henry VIII. The Catholic Church can trace our origins to Jesus and His rock, Peter.

The world certainly has a lot of opinions of who Jesus is; however, who do you think Jesus is? It can be difficult to form our faith, especially among all the noises, distractions, and troubles we face. Even our sins can cloud the way of becoming stronger in faith. Fortunately, God gives us a beautiful sacrament to start fresh and come back to Him and His bride, the Church. What are other ways that we can come to know Jesus better?

4 LIVE IT! [ SINCERITY ]

Sincerity means being free from deceit or hypocrisy. God invites 5 us to be sincere in our faith and to practice what we preach. He also gives us the sacrament of Reconciliation when we aren’t being as sincere in our faith and daily lives.

Try to be more sincere in your actions and in your words. If you love someone, show them. Instead of being “nice,” try to take it another level and be “kind.” Being nice to someone 6 PRAY IT! may involve saying some sort of compliment, but being kind to Heavenly Father, help us to be more someone involves saying and sincere in our words and deeds. Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

Jesus knows beforehand what He must suffer during His death and Passion in order to complete His mission on Earth. When Jesus shares with Peter and the disciples what He is required to do, they are aback and even and scold Jesus for saying such a terrible thing. They speak out of fear for their friend, sadness for what is to come, and selfishness for their own wants. Instead of helping Jesus fulfill His goal, they look for an easier way out from what they know must come true. Jesus then addresses all of His disciples and tells them all what is necessary to be a follower of Christ.

In this scenario, Jesus is not asking His disciples for their sympathy or advice; instead He is sharing with them what He must do in order to fulfill the will of the Lord. Jesus is using His situation as a way for the disciples to understand what is required of them to be His follower.

In your class at school, your teacher gives you a syllabus at the beginning of the year outlining what you need to do to succeed in the class. You may not always want to do your homework or study for your tests, but you know that your teacher “will repay all according to his conduct.” That is, based on the requirements your teacher has set for the class and how well you have met those requirements, you will be rewarded based on your efforts.

If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses’. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.' Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. 4. Live It! [ FORGIVENESS ]

Jesus tells us to forgive others seventy-seven times. When He said this, He did not mean we should only forgive literally seventy-seven times, but that the times we forgive should be unlimited. Forgiveness means not having ill feeling towards someone who has wronged us. When someone hurts us, we should pardon them, for that is what God asks of us. Anger at this person will not help us, but forgiveness will bring us peace. Remember, all of us have wronged God, and if we do not forgive others for wronging us, we might be hypocritical like the unforgiving servant in the passage. God will forgive us as we forgive others. This is what we mean when we say, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

23 Jesus Teaches Us Giving God What Belongs to God

WEEK A–29 Matthew 22:15-21

The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

1. EXPLORE IT! In this passage, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus by asking Him whether they should pay the tax to Caesar, which was often regarded in their time as unjust. They believed this would trap Jesus, for if He said to pay the tax, He would possibly lose the support of His followers, but if He said not to pay the tax, He would be committing treason against the law. Jesus outsmarts the Pharisees, telling them to give to the Caesar what belongs to him and to give to God what belongs to Him.

2. CONNECT IT! We learn from this passage that we should never try to trick others. But most importantly, Jesus teaches us it is imperative to follow the laws given to us on earth. However, we must not forget to also follow the laws given to us by God. It is very easy to think that following earthly laws are enough, but to reach eternal life with God, we must do what He wants us to do in addition to following those laws.

The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus, but He knew better and turned the situation into an opportunity to spread His message. Though we are asked to follow the law here on earth, we should ultimately focus our attention on God. Have you ever focused on earthly concerns over heavenly ones? Have you given all that belongs to God to Him, including yourself?

4. LIVE IT! [ INTEGRITY ] Integrity: the quality of being honest and adhering to sound morals.

Challenge yourself to never be dishonest and to never have the intent of tricking others. Instead, be sincere and kind with others. “Sound morality” in this case refers to morality with God at its center. Remember to keep the law, but do not forget to give yourself to God, for we belong to Him as well. Give him the prayer, worship, and praise that is duly His!

5. REMEMBER IT!

"Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." (Matthew 22:21)

6. PRAY IT! Lord, help us to be honest in all of our dealings. Give us understanding and strength so that we may give to You all that is Yours. Help us to remember that our lives should be centered around You and not earthly concerns so that You may receive from us all that You deserve. Amen.

The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

The Parable of the Ten Virgins speaks about how we must always be ready and prepared, for the Lord may come at any time just as how the bridegroom arrived in the middle of the night. However, the passage also mentions being prudent and having the wisdom to think and plan ahead of time. A simple lamp was all that was needed to greet the bridegroom. But, half of the virgins were wise, and knew that anything could happen and that they might need to stay out longer than expected. Planning ahead of time, five virgins had the foresight to also bring along extra oil. Therefore, they were already prepared when there was an unexpected delay. They were rewarded for their good judgement, whereas the other virgins were caught off guard and locked out of the wedding feast.

In this parable, Jesus wants us to understand the importance of being prepared and vigilant. We do not know the certainty of tomorrow. Because of this we must always be ready for whatever comes our way. How are we going to prepare ourselves for the eventual coming of our Lord? What are we going to do to get ready?

The Gospel of Mark explains to us that God has prepared for us to welcome the Son of God, Jesus, to the world. Jesus is mightier than Saint John the Baptist. According to the Gospel, Jesus will come and baptize us with the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, each of us becomes the children of God and the Holy Spirit washes away our original sin. When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When Jesus was of age, His parents brought Him to the temple to be purified. Upon entering the temple, the family was greeted by Simeon, a prophet, who gave praise to Jesus and blessed them all. Later in the temple, the family was approached by the prophetess Anna, who worshiped in the temple day and night with fasting and prayer. Anna gave thanks to God and spoke about Jesus, who was to redeem Jerusalem.
