Fuller, Heather From: Fuller, Heather Sent: 21 May 2014 09:54 To: Owen, David Subject: FW: Knighton ward changes Stoneygate shops ‐‐‐‐‐Original Message‐‐‐‐‐ From: Andy Ritchie Sent: 20 May 2014 16:15 To: Reviews@ Subject: Knighton ward changes Stoneygate shops I Andy Ritchie write as the owner of Deli Flavour located at As a local business trading currently in Knighton Ward I wish to object to your proposals to move the Stoneygate Shops area (Allandale Road and Francis Street) in to the Stoneygate Ward. To do so would show a total lack of reference to the local communities. We have over many years been well supported by the Knighton community, via the public Community Meetings of the Council. They have supported us to improve our area and to run events. This has included financial support via grants which receive public backing at meetings. In contrast at the Stoneygate Ward Community Meetings such applications have not received support. There have been public expressions, we feel, that are based on ethnicity and class, which has resulted in no support being forthcoming. Moving Stoneygate Shops into the Stoneygate Ward will break a link developed with one community which shows its support in tangible As some of you may know, the local Ward Councils are shifting their boundaries and this directly affects the chance of FUTURE markets at Stoneygate, as your area will now become part of the Stoneygate Ward, as opposed to the supportive Knighton Ward. Those who attended the Stoneygate meeting recently will have witnessed that there is no interest from the Stoneygate Ward in supporting initiatives like the Stoneygate Market and would not help fund it. Thanks Andy Ritchie 1 Fuller, Heather From: Egan, Helen Sent: 20 May 2014 15:24 To: Owen, David Subject: FW: Review of Leicester Ward Boundaries - Aylestone Hi David, Please see the below sub from Leicester. Regards, Helen From: Shirley Rogers Sent: 20 May 2014 12:40 To: Reviews@ Subject: Review of Leicester Ward Boundaries - Aylestone I am writing to you to object to your proposal to split the existing Aylestone ward, in particular combining Aylestone Village with Eyres Monsell. This proposal ignores the lack of any community cohesion between these two areas and separates the long- standing combination of Aylestone Village with Aylestone Park along the Aylestone Road. Such a combination has never been even proposed before in previous reviews of the City boundaries as there is no natural co-affinity, and there is no indication that this has changed since the last boundary review in 2002. I note that proper separation of Saffron and Eyres Monsell is one of the stated aims of this review recognising them as separate communities. This should not be at the detriment of no longer recognising Aylestone Village as a separate community from Eyres Monsell just to equalise the electoral arithmetic. Eyres Monsell and Aylestone have their own community centres and local groups and do not rely on, or look to one another. The previous 2002 review originally proposed a different arrangement of two three-member wards for the Aylestone/Saffron/Eyres Monsell area, but after consultation this was reversed to the current three two- member ward arrangement, specifically because of there being three identifiable community groupings. No case has been made for this now only being two and the arguments made then remain valid today. As the council is not elected by thirds there is no practical need to have three member wards. As this is to to the detriment of representation of distinct communities I therefore request that this is reconsidered. Aylestone was a area long before the other two came in to being. Saffron and Eyres Monsell were created as estates in their own right one before the war and one after,so why change anything we prefer to be called Aylestone.People know us as Aylestone and it it just making it difficult for everyone. We have our own community and we just do not want to be renamed. Hopefully you will take the wishes of the people of Aylestone into consideration when the decision is made. Not sure why they want to do this to the long serving locals of Olde Aylestone but I as a resident I am opposed to it. Aylestone is a lovely little village with mostly middle class citizens, if you are going to split it, then essentially you are making Ayestone into a working class residential area. If this is indeed what you are designing then please let me know and I will move, as I guess when or if it does go ahead most of the locals will move anyway, allowing the working class to move in and downgrade the area. The real issue in Leicester and other cities like it is the boundary of the city itself. The total urban conurbation of Leicester far exceeds the land within the official city boundary and it would make more sense to greatly extend the city boundary outwards in all directions to absorb all of the villages and suburban sprawl within the total conurbation. This would result in savings in local government administration and deliver more accurate political representation. Where is the democracy at Leicester and other cities like it when 52 electoral seats out of 54 are held by a single political party? This clash should have been flagged up earlier before the wheels were put in motion As for the ward boundaries being moved, this is also a major blow to The Allandale Road shopping area as when we attended the Stoneygate ward meeting it was very clear that the people who lived in the Highfields and Evington Road areas were very hostile to us, viewing the area as snobby and wildly expensive! This may have applied long ago but certainly not now. This shopping area is supposed to be 'the jewel in Leicester's crown' but trading here is difficult and we need help with funding for events to help revive and boost the area. We feel that the Knighton ward were much more sympathetic to our plight and fully understood that for these events to happen we needed help with funding. The people of Knighton ward are proud of the Allandsle Road shopping area and are keen to see it survive and improve as we are. The people in Stoneygate ward didn't care if It disappeared altogether!
