Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

    Religious Studies Center Style Guide, 1 October 2018 Authors who submit manuscripts for potential publication should generally follow the guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Style Guide for Editors and Writers, 5th ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2013). This style guide summarizes the main principles in the other style guides and lists a few exceptions to their guidelines. Formatting 1. Use double-spacing throughout the manuscript and the endnotes. Use one-inch margins, and insert page numbers at the bottom of the page. Use a Times New Roman 12-point font for both the body of the manuscript and the notes. Use only one space after periods. 2. If you have images, add captions and courtesy lines (such as courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City) to the Word file. However, do not insert images in the Word files; submit them separately. Images should be 300 dpi or better (TIFF or JPG files). File names and captions should match (Fig. 1.1 = chapter 1, figure 1). Headings 3. Update: Include headings to break up the text. First-Level Headings First-level headings should be flush left and bolded, as in the example above. Capitalize internal words except for articles (a, an, and the), conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet), prepositions, and the word to in infinitive phrases. Second-Level Headings Second-level headings should be flush left and italicized. Capitalize like first-level headings. Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be italicized, followed by a period, and run in to the text; capitalization should be handled sentence-style (capitalize the first word and proper nouns).

    History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phoenix, Arizona Mormon pioneers first settled near Mesa in 1877, but it wasn’t until 1912 that the first official Church meeting took place, when a group of nine members gathered for the first time in a room above Donofrio’s Confectionery in Phoenix. The small congregation continued to meet in various places, including a laundry shop and over a bicycle shop, until the first Church building was constructed in 1918. It was located at Seventh Street and Monroe and was built at a cost of $18,000. Two hundred ninety-eight members attended the dedication of the building, where J. Robert Price was called as the first bishop (the leader of a congregation). By 1927 membership of the Church had grown in the Salt River Valley to the point where a temple, the first in the state, was constructed in Mesa. The Mesa Arizona Temple is still in operation today and anchors a historic district, which has predominantly retained its residential character. The Church has a legacy of humanitarian service in Arizona. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, many businesses experienced great financial stress, and many failed. Good Samaritan Hospital, one of two Phoenix hospitals, did not escape this fate. Hospital superintendent J. O. Sexson needed $75,000 to keep the hospital open and turned to the Church for the needed funds. He subsequently traveled to Utah and met with senior Church leaders, including President Heber J. Grant, who said, “Mr. Sexson, you have a very worthy cause, but we don’t loan money.

This is a work in progress and is constantly evolving. What works for the congregation I serve in will not work in every congregation. This book is not intended to teach ASL signs or grammar. It is assumed that anyone using this as a resource understands the different types of sentence structure with the accompanying NMM’s and can apply that knowledge to the gloss provided. This is intended to be a resource book; a starting place for anyone interpreting congregational hymns. These are NOT intended to be used for choir or any other performance as that requires a different approach. Through the process, my testimony has grown beyond measure. I truly began to understand why the Lord says a song of the righteous is a prayer. Growing up in the church, I sang these hymns at church, at home, in the car, or wherever I was. Even so, it wasn’t until I began to research and pray about them that my love for the hymns grew. As I have studied the lyrics along with the scriptures and the history of each hymn, I am in awe of the wealth of testimony and teaching we hold in our hands with the wondrous gift of music.
