Working within the School

The post-holder is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young per- sons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact. Job Description

Benenden is looking to appoint a creative, energetic and inspirational Director of Digital Learning and Innovation from Sep 2020 to lead the strategic development of the school. The post will carry significant leadership responsibility and the successful applicant will be responsible to the Head for ensuring that all aspects of the Digital Strategy are in line with the Benenden’s Digital Vision, though they will report directly to the Deputy Head.

Benenden is currently in the process of reviewing its use of digital technology across the school. The Director of Digital Learning will be responsible for leading the next phase of this process: developing the School’s Digital Strategy in depth. The incumbent will have plenty of scope to add their own mark to the School’s digital plan during these early stages. Making sure that the school is ‘on point’ in its delivery of digital education to its pupils and staff is vital to its educational strategy. Innovation in this area is very much encouraged, but not at the expense of the core role of delivery of up to date, relevant skills that enable will the community to work independent and self-sufficiently in the digital world both during their time at Benenden and beyond.

The Director of Digital Learning and Innovation will be responsible for leading the Benenden Digital Team, made up of staff and student representatives from across the school, in the delivery of the Digital Strategy. They will lead on the digital aspects of teaching and learning, working alongside the Deputy Head Academic and Director of Curriculum and Professional Excellence and other members of the management team to ensure that the digital strategy is aligned with the wider strategy across the school. They will be a capable and enthusiastic trainer being able to enthuse, inspire and encourage staff to be inventive and experimental in their use of digital technology in the classroom.

We are looking for a candidate who is able to continually adapt to the rapidly changing digital environment and is able to enable the school, its pupils and its staff to do the same. The school would encourage applications for individuals who are flexible, forward thinkers who are keen to deliver the best possible digital education for the whole school community. Ideally the incumbent will have significant experience of developing, implementing and delivering digital strategy within an educational environment, that said the school is open to receiving applications from across the digital career field.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Digital Strategy and Leadership

• Lead the school in all aspects of its digital development including the formulation and implementation of the school’s Digital Strategy • Lead the Benenden Digital Team • Work alongside the Director of Finance and Operations as part of the IT Committee, leading on ensuring that the software and hardware infrastructure of the school is capable of supporting the digital vision • Work in conjunction with the Head of IT Support to ensure that the IT strategy set by the school is effectively delivered • Line manage the MIS and Data Systems Manager • Proactively research methods of enhancing teaching and learning to ensure that the school is at the cutting edge of its field, staying abreast of developments within other schools and across the technology sector • Play an active role in representing the school externally: taking part in conferences, keeping up to date with digital trends as well as contributing to NESTA, DfE Digital Strategy, case studies, etc • Coordinate further development of the school’s data management software and systems • Manage the use of the school’s VLE, parent and student portals and continue to develop these in line with the needs of the school • Work with Director of Marketing and Communications to improve our global digital presence.

Teaching and Learning

• Work closely with and support the work of the Deputy Head Academic, Executive Director of Curriculum and Professional Excellence in implementing the School’s teaching and learning strategy • Be the expert in and lead on teaching and learning using digital means • Lead on research into digital teaching methods • Work with Heads of Department to support them in the use of digital teaching methods in the classroom, advising on hardware and software to support educational outcomes • Engage with pupils and parents and keep them up to date with changes in the digital technology and opportunities • Work closely with the Careers Department, lead on preparation of students for University courses in all digitally orientated career fields • Work with the Deputy Head Pastoral and Safeguarding Team to implement a digital safety programme within the school

• Research and implement a Digital Learning Platform to enable online courses to be delivered both in the UK and abroad • Ensure that any system implemented is available to be accessed by our Partnership schools and wider Benenden community.

Curriculum Development

• Implement a bespoke whole school Benenden Digital Curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13 embedding this new curriculum within the existing Benenden Diploma, Personal and Professional Development and technology timetable • Work closely with the Director of Strategic Projects and Assistant Head (Co-curricular) in enabling the educational outcomes of A Complete Education Programme to be communicated to pupils, parents and staff • In time, work to accredit the new Benenden Digital Curriculum with an appropriate national body

Training

• Lead and co-ordinate the digital and IT training for all staff. • Provide regular staff training programme that is based upon the Digital Strategy ensuring that training is structured, progressive and starts from the ‘bottom up’ • Provide advice and guidance to all staff on training opportunities available to them

GDPR and Compliance

• Work with the Senior Management to ensure that all policies relating to device use in the classroom are up to date and accurate • Work with the Director of Finance and Operations to ensure that the school maintains legal compliance in all areas of digital strategy

The Campus

Benenden enjoys a beautiful and historic 250 acre parkland setting in the Weald of Kent. Living, learning, sporting and leisure facilities are clustered around the original 19th century mansion which adds to Benenden’s sense of close community and enables students to get the most out of the wide variety of activities on offer every day. Over the last 12 years almost £30 million has been spent on improving every facet of living and learning at Benenden: investing in facilities, widening the curricu- lum, extending activities outside the classroom, and improving its boarding facilities. Most recently we have opened our new All-Weather Pitch, Sports Pavilion and Staff Housing and are now working to build a new School Hall and Music School.

Co-Curricular life

Sport

All girls are expected and encouraged to participate in a variety of sport, exercise and wellbeing re- lated activities at Benenden. Physical Education is compulsory in all year groups and while the pro- gramme remains more rigid in the younger years, as girls’ progress to the upper school, they have a completely flexible programme with numerous option choices. We very much aim to promote both performance and participation, thus we strive to excel on the competitive sports field but also en- deavour to help each girl find something she is good at and enjoys, in order that she may develop a lifelong commitment to keeping fit and healthy.

Our major sports are Lacrosse, Netball and Tennis, and the September 2016 opening of our state-of-the-art all-weather pitch, has enabled us to expand our Hockey provision. There are also a wide range of other opportunities to take part and/or compete and the list includes Squash, Rugby, Trampoline, Athletics, Cross Country, Rounders, Equestrian, Badminton, Cricket, Judo, Karate, Fencing and SCUBA Diving. Benenden competes consistently and with much success in county, regional and national level sports competitions, with staff and students also representing their coun- try. In addition to the incredible sporting programme on offer, girls can benefit from accessing a well- equipped Fitness Gym and 25m Swimming Pool, which are open seven days a week, as well as a plethora of Fitness and Pool-based exercise classes/activities and a host of active sports support services.

MUN has continued to grow into an established and much celebrated activity within the life of the School, with a large number of girls competing in MUN conferences in the UK and abroad. Increasingly Benenden pupils are being given significant roles and awards at national and international conferences.

Drama

Drama at Benenden benefits from a purpose-built 300 seat theatre, which houses an additional 100 seat ‘black box’ Studio Theatre. Nearly 40% of our girls take Extra Drama in one form or another and we mount at least four productions each year. Students of Drama at Benenden have gone on to notable success in the fields of Theatre and Television.
