From: WoffordNews [email protected] Subject: Concerning slanderous websites Date: April 13, 2010 at 9:20 AM To: Wofford Staff [email protected], Wofford Students [email protected]

To: The Wofford Community From: President Dunlap

We all know there are hurtful and malicious websites that exist to convey anonymous slander. The sites persist because of prurient and mean-spirited impulses by a few who attack others behind their backs and by many more who gratify such meanness by amusing themselves with what is posted. I trust we also realize that those who merely consume such gossip are, in effect, complicitous with those who skulk and snipe in this cowardly way.

The 1st Amendment teaches us that censorship is not the solution. Only the repudiation of a whole community can effectively end such contemptible behavior. I ask you to keep our honor untarnished by refusing to be part of it.

Wofford Theatre Presents "Big Love" by Charles Mee, Adapted by Kerry Ferguson Date/Time: 4/15/2010 8:00:00 PM Location: Tony White Theater Cost: $12 Adults and $5 Students Details: It’s SPRING, and love is in the air! The final show in Wofford’s 40th Anniversary Season is Big Love by Chuck Mee. Inspired by one of Aeschylus' earliest surviving plays, The Suppliant Women, Big Love tells the story of fifty would-be brides fleeing the Greek marriage contract that binds the women to marry their fifty cousins. Director Kerry Ferguson has crafted a new version of the play to make it into a perfect blend of classical themes and modern twists, filled with pop songs, first kisses, and food fights, and rounded out with just the right amount of body-slamming mayhem. It’s a lot like love: scary, fun, unexpected, beautiful, complicated, and Big. The show runs April 15-17 and 21-24 at 8 p.m., in the Tony White Theater in Wofford’s Campus Life Building. The show on the 21st is free for all Wofford Students. Please call 597-4080 to make reservations! Contact: Lily Lucas Email: [email protected] Telephone/Extension: 864-597-4080

To: All Members of the Wofford College Community From: The Student Affairs Committee of the College Date: April 15, 2010

The Student Affairs Committee, chaired by Dr. Bryan Splawn this year, will be meeting at the end of the month to make their final selections for the College's Annual Awards. Please nominate students and non- students who deserve to be recognized for their contributions to our community. Do not presume that others will nominate a senior just because they made a significant contribution. The submission of more than one nomination provides an important indication to the committee of community respect for that nominee. The nomination form can be found at the following link. You may nominate more than one student for each award. However, you must complete one form per student. http://www.wofford.edu/studentLife/form.aspx?ekfrm=39194

On behalf of the Committee, thank you for your consideration and your thoughtful nominations.

Voice: 864/597-4044 Fax: 864/597-4049 From: WoffordNews [email protected] Subject: 2010 Terrio and Picnic Luncheon Date: April 15, 2010 at 2:54 PM To: Wofford Staff [email protected], Wofford Students [email protected]

All members of the Wofford College Community are invited to the 2010 Terrio and a picnic luncheon on the lawn at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010

A word about the Terrio from Dr. Dunlap:

The inspiration for the Wofford Terrio was the famous Palio in Siena, Italy, the horse race that culminates in that ancient town’s central piazza. Each neighborhood enters a horse and rider (no saddles, but distinctive colors) that gallop recklessly through the narrow streets of the town. The race, which goes back to antiquity, is preceded by a pageant and attended by huge crowds from all over the world, but especially by the Sienese themselves. I would venture to say that, although we Americans tend to think the most famous horse race in the world is the Kentucky Derby and the British tend to suppose it’s the Grand National, the truth is that the Palio is probably the correct answer.

Wofford’s Terrio parallels Siena’s Palio in the following respects: The race occurs in the heart of the Ancient City-State of Wofford and culminates in the great piazza in front of our historic Old Main. Teams of students and professors, often dressed in colorful traditional regalia and representing curricular and extracurricular neighborhoods (departments and organizations), drive fancifully decorated golf carts recklessly and flamboyantly about the oval of Wofford’s green. Trophies are awarded, and winners strut about triumphantly for the entire following year. It goes without saying that huge crowds attend, while passions and good humor are at fever pitch.

Although rumors of souped-up engines have persistently attached themselves to competitors from the hard sciences, there is no reliable evidence other than a legendary cart from the Math Department which, in the initial Terrio, is said to have achieved a maximum speed of 72 mph, leaving its competitors more than three-quarters of a lap behind. No wrong-doing was ever proved, and the team from Mathematics insisted their success derived from their having solved Fermat’s Last Theorem shortly before the race. The pace car this year will again be the Presidential Golf Cart, appropriately decked out to confirm the dignity of office. As in the past, there will be a ceremonial Blessing of the Carts by Chaplain Robinson as well as music, food, and bonhomie. Under penalty of eternal regret, DO NOT MISS THE 2010 TERRIO!

Wofford May Day Whisk Away!! Details: Dear Wofford Faculty, Staff and Students, The Wofford May Day Whisk Away is a fundraising event designed by a Wofford senior for the benefit of the people of Haiti. The earthquake in January is one of the greatest mobility tragedies in recent history as thousands of Haitians have become one of the greatest mobility tragedies in recent history as thousands of Haitians have become amputees as a result of their orthopaedic injuries. To combat this suffering, a rehabilitation clinic is being built at Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, and funding is needed to buy prosthetic limbs and to train personnel to run the clinic. The clinic will be a permanent and sustainable operation. The Wofford May Day Whisk Away is a day filled with activities designed to make our guests feel as if they are students again...completely at ease, having a great time. Your help is needed to spread the news of this event and to encourage people to either register to come and enjoy the fun or make a donation! We also need as much student help that day as possible! It is for a very worthy cause. Please see the following link for more information about the Wofford May Day Whisk Away. http://www.wofford.edu/whiskaway/.
