  • Paul Motian Trio I Have the Room Above Her
ECM Paul Motian Trio I Have The Room Above Her Paul Motian: drums; Bill Frisell: guitar; Joe Lovano: tenor saxophone ECM 1902 CD 6024 982 4056 (4) Release: January 2005 “Paul Motian, Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano have celebrated solo careers, but when they unite a special magic occurs, a marvel of group empathy” – The New Yorker "I Have The Room Above Her" marks the return of Paul Motian to ECM, the label that first provided a context for his compositions and his musical directions. The great American- Armenian drummer, now in his 74th year, is currently at a creative peak, and his trio, launched in 1984 with the ECM album "It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago", has never sounded better. Motian, of course, has continued to be an important contributor to ECM recordings over the years -- see for instance his recent work with Marilyn Crispell and with Paul Bley - but hasn't recorded as a leader for the label in almost 20 years. His anthology in ECM’s Rarum series, however, released at the beginning of 2004, served as a powerful reminder of just how original his musical concept remains. As a drummer, improviser, composer of intensely lyrical melodies, and musical thinker, Paul Motian is a unique figure, and a musician of vast and varied experience. As a young man, he played with Thelonious Monk, whose idiosyncratic sense of swing (and stubborn independence from all prevailing trends) was to be a lifelong influence. Motian played with Coleman Hawkins, with Lennie Tristano, with Sonny Rollins, even, fleetingly, with John Coltrane.

  • Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide
Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Overview These six videos are presented and performed by jazz and blues pianist, composer, singer, producer and educator Eli Yamin. The videos vary in length from 3 to 12 minutes. The title of the series aptly denotes the content because Eli Yamin and his group of master musicians truly do “celebrate” 5 songs of Dave Brubeck. Each video examines and performs a specific song and its unique qualities. Although the focus is always the music, the lessons easily apply to literacy and language arts standards, grades 6-12. The amount of time spent on the lessons can be decided by the teachers, depending on students’ interest, needs, and planning. Below is a brief summary of the content of each video to help teachers decide which best suits their curriculum. It is recommended that all the videos be studied in order to provide a full scope of Brubeck’s music, but the lessons and videos can each stand alone. Dave Brubeck Brief Background Dave Brubeck was a famous jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader who lived from 1920 to 2012. He founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 after playing for several years in his group called the Dave Brubeck Octet. His group became very popular in the 1950s, most notably for his combination of great melodies, strong sense of swing, and unusual meters and rhythms from around the globe. Some of his more popular songs are "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." He collaborated with quartet member Paul Desmond on numerous compositions; Desmond’s “Take Five” became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than one million copies.

  • Birth of the Film by Bruce Spiegel
Bill Evans Time Remembered Birth of the Film by Bruce Spiegel There was a crystal moment when you knew for certain this Bill Evans movie was going to happen. And it was all due to drummer Paul Motian. But let me digress for a moment. I have been listening to jazz since I was a kid, not knowing why but just listening. My father had a webcor portable record player and he had a small but mighty collection of brand new 33 rpm albums. There was Benny Goodman in hi fi, there was the Uptown Stars play Duke Ellington. Illinois Jacquet and Slam Stewart; then there was Fats Waller, and with Honeysuckle Rose and the flip side of the 45, Your Feet’s Too Big. How I loved that song. “Up in Harlem there was 4 of us, me your two big feet, and you!” At college level or maybe it was high school, it was Art Blakey and the Jazz messengers, moaning Horace silver, everything of his, and then the cavalcade began with Monk, Trane, and Miles. I bought an old fisher- amp, speaker and record player and got everything possible, all the way from Louis Armstrong to Jelly Roll Morton; from Teddy Wilson to Sonny Clark. For me it was a young thirst for the best in jazz, just a lifetime of searching for the best records, the real records. And making a collection of them. It was a life-long journey. I had heard Bill Evans but it wasn’t until I was older, much older that I was smitten; really hit hard with his music.
