Box 429 Yaba Lagos, Flat 1, Block 1, Plot 1578 No 4, Auyo Close Area 1 (AOI) Garki Abuja Ondo State was originally part of the Western Region in the three-region structure of 1954 and was known as Ondo Province. In 1967, with the creation of twelve federal states by General Yakubu Gowon's military government, Ondo became part of Western State. The military government of General Murtala Muhammed created nineteen states out of the existing twelve in 1976 and Western State was divided into Oyo, Ogun and Ondo states. In 1996, the military government of General Sani Abacha carved out Ekiti State from the then Ondo State. Ondo State covers an area of 15,195.2 square kilometers and lies at latitude 7° 10' north and longitude 5° 05' east. It has a population of 3,460,877 (2006 CENSUS FIGURES) and a population density of 218 people per square kilometer. Administrative Structure There are eighteen local government areas (LGAs) in the state. Each has a chairman as its administrative head. Local Government Areas: •Akoko North-East, •Akoko North-West, •Akoko South-East, •Akoko South-West, •Akure North, •Akure South, •Ese Odo, •Idanre •Ifedore, •Ilaje, •Ile Oluji/Okeigbo, •Irele, •Odigbo, •Okitipupa, •Ondo East, •Ondo West, •Ose, •Owo Ondo State is predominantly tropical rainforest with some areas of forest savannah to its north. There are forest and mangrove swamps in the south of the state. Agriculture is very important, with a significant percentage of the state's labor force engaging in farming. Cocoa is the dominant cash crop grown in Ondo. Other crops cultivated for domestic consumption include yam, cassava and oil palm. The main minerals found in Ondo State include iron ore, granite, quartz,National coal, Patron: tin, His marble Excellency: and Dr. Goodluck petroleum. There is only one road leading into the town. It is the same road that you will pass through if you are leaving the town” . The hill’s flat surface is 3,000 feet above sea level. It is accessible by an intimidating 660 steps laid in concrete along the side of the hill. Climbers are furnished with several resting places to make climbing a pleasurable adventure. “The steps were 460 in number when it was first constructed in 1954, but with the intervention of UNESCO in 2007, when the hill was tentatively listed as a world heritage site, the steps went up to 660. The ancient community of Oke Idanre are in three quarters, occupying a land area of 5km radius.” Idanre hill still retains the Old Igboore Standard School, located in the first part of the hill, known as Udega, established in 1896 by Gilbert Carter, who was a colonial visitor to Nigeria in 1894. It also boasts of the legendary Omiapaara (Thunder River), the Arun River, supposedly possessing healing powers; the court, and the mausoleum, where kings were interred.     European Scientific Journal August edition vol. 8, No.18 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF SOCIO-POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION IN AKURE REGION UP TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD Afe, Adedayo Emmanuel, PhD Department of Historyand International Studies,AdekunleAjasin University,Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract Thepaper examines the political transformation of Akureregion from the earliest times to the present. The paper traces these stages of political development in order to demonstrate features associated with each stage. It argues further that pre-colonial Akure region, like other Yoruba regions, had a workable political system headed by a monarch. However, the Native Authority Ordinance of 1916, which brought about the establishment of the Native Courts and British judicial administration in the region led to the decline in the political power of the traditional institution.Even after independence, the traditional political institution has continually been subjugated. The work relies on both oral and written sources, which were critically examined. The paper, therefore,argues that even with its present political status in the contemporary Nigerian politics, the traditional political institution is still relevant to the development of thesociety. Keywords: Akure, Political, Social, Traditional and Authority Introduction The paper reviews the political administration ofAkure region from the earliest time to the present and examines the implication of the dynamics between the two periods may have for the future. Systematic sampling was used to select forty eight schools from the two hundred and eighty eight public schools in the state during the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sections. Applying the instrument of Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, the study revealed that (i).females are more sensitive to public school enrolment during 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sessions than their males counterparts, (ii).there is significant difference between the female enrolments during the two academic sessions, (iii).there is significant difference between the male enrolments during the two academic sessions and (iv). the trend of male female enrolments in the selected public schools shows improvement during 2013/2014 over that of 2012/2013 academic session. It has been observed that amount, size, nature and complexity of waste generated by man are profoundly influenced by the level of urbanization and intensity of socio-economical development in a given settlement. The problem associated with its management ranges from waste generation, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. The study involves a kind of multi-criteria evaluation method by using geographical information technology as a practical instrument to determine the most suitable sites of landfill location in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo state. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) 2002 and updated 2012 were used to map the most suitable site for waste disposal in Owo LGA. The result indicates that sites were found within the study area. The most suitable sites in the study area are located at 200metre buffer to surface water and 100metre to major and minor roads. The selected areas have 2500metres buffer zone distance from urban areas (built up areas). The study purposes acceptable landfill sites for solid waste disposal in the study area. The results achieved in this study will help policy and decision makers to take appropriate decision in considering sanitary landfill sites.

S. Oyekale* and D. O. Ajesi Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Accepted 17 May, 2011 Exploitation of NWFPs poses serious threat to sustainable forest management in Nigeria. This study analyzed the driving forces for exploiting forest products in Okitipupa Local Government area of Ondo State, Nigeria. Data were obtained through structured questionnaires that were randomly administered to farmers. The data were subjected to descriptive analysis and Tobit regression. Results show that monetary worth of monthly collections of NWFPs is N12,167.50 and fuel wood has the highest average monthly collection worth N 3,576.50. The Tobit regression shows that community variable sex, age of house heads number of dependant farming as primary occupation, having alternative means of meeting the needs for NWFPs and dependants income show statistical significance (p<0.05). It was recommended that efforts to reduce degradation of NWFPs must consider development of research into provision of alternatives to some of the resources, reduction in demographic pressure and keen consideration of some cultural gender factors.     INTRODUCTION Ondo is one of the six states that make up the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It has interstate boundaries with Ekiti and Kogi states to the north, Edo State to the east, Delta State to the southeast, Osun State to the northwest and Ogun State to the southwest. The Gulf of Guinea lies to its south and its capital is Akure. ONDO: THE FACTS AND FIGURES Dubbed as the Sunshine State, Ondo, which was created on February 3, 1976, has a population of 3,441,024 persons (2006 census) distributed across 18 local councils within a land area of 14,788.723 Square Kilometres. Located in the South-West geo-political zone of Nigeria, Ondo State is bounded in the North by Ekiti/Kogi states; in the East by Edo State; in the West by Oyo and Ogun states, and in the South by the Atlantic Ocean. Ondo State is a multi-ethnic state with the majority being Yoruba while there are also the Ikale, Ilaje, Arogbo and Akpoi, who are of Ijaw extraction and inhabit the riverine areas of the state. The state plays host to 880 public primary schools, and 190 public secondary schools and a number of tertiary institutions including the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo, Federal College of Agriculture, Akure and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. Arguably, Ondo is one of the most resource-endowed states of Nigeria. It is agriculturally rich with agriculture contributing about 75 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The main revenue yielding crops are cocoa, palm produce and timber.
