The Metaphysical Baggage of Physics Lee Smolin argues that life is more fundamental than physical laws. BY MICHAEL SEGAL ILLUSTRATION BY LOUISA BERTMAN JANUARY 30, 2014 An issue on tme would not be complete without a conversaton with Lee Smolin. High school dropout, theoretcal physicist, and founding member of the Perimeter Insttute for Theoretcal Physics in Waterloo, Canada, Smolin’s life and work refect many of the values of this magazine. Constantly probing the edges of physics, he has also pushed beyond them, into economics and the philosophy of science, and into popular writng. Not one to shy away from a confrontaton, his 2008 bookThe Trouble with Physicstook aim at string theory, calling one of the hotest developments in theoretcal physics of the past 50 years a dead end. In his thinking on tme too, he has taken a diferent tack from the mainstream, arguing that the fow of tme is not just real, but more fundamental than physical law. He spoke to me on the phone from his home in Toronto. How long have you been thinking about tme? The whole story starts back in the ’80s when I was puzzling over the failure of string theory to uniquely tell us the principles that determine what the laws of physics are. I challenged myself to invent a way that nature might select what the laws of physics turned out to be. I invented a hypothesis called Cosmological Natural Selecton, which was testable, which made explicit predictons. This wasn’t my main day job; my main day job was working on quantum gravity where it’s assumed that tme is unreal, that tme is an illusion, and I was working, like anybody else, on the assumpton that tme is an illusion for most of my career. -

California 91125 ABSTRACT A simple picture of jet development in QCD is described. Various appli- cations are treated, including transverse spreading of jets, hadroproduced y* pT distributions, lepton energy spectra from heavy quark decays, soft parton multiplicities and hadron cluster formation. *Work supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC-03-79ER0068 and by a Feynman Fellowship. 18 According to QCD, high-energy e+- e annihilation into hadrons is initiated by the production from the decaying virtual photon of a quark and an antiquark, ,- +- each with invariant masses up to the c.m. energy vs in the original e e collision. The q and q then travel outwards radiating gluons which serve to spread their energy and color into a jet of finite angle. After a time ~ 1/IS, the rate of gluon emissions presumably decreases roughly inversely with time, except for the logarithmic rise associated with the effective coupling con 2 stant, (a (t) ~ l/log(t/A ), where It is the invariant mass of the radiating s . quark). Finally, when emissions have degraded the energies of the partons produced until their invariant masses fall below some critical ~ (probably c a few times h), the system of quarks and gluons begins to condense into the observed hadrons. The probability for a gluon to be emitted at times of 0(--)1 is small IS and may be est~mated from the leading terms of a perturbation series in a (s). -

Among the schools of Hellenistic philosophy, one of much interest for anyone with an interest in epistemology flourished. Skeptics, as they were called, combining the negative1 arguments of the rival- ing schools of Stoics and Epicureans, tried to disprove2 the possibility of knowledge. One of the key works in the tradition of Hellenistic skepticism is Sextus Empiricus’ “Outlines of Pyrrhonism.” As the title shows, in the work, Sextus Empiricus tries to outline the skeptical tradition started by Pyrrho. In this essay, I am going to discuss a certain distinction made by Sextus Empiricus. The distinc- tion is between what the philosopher calls appearances and underlying objects (D)3. I will try to compre- hend the motivation for such a distinction and the logical consequences of it. However, I will try to give some arguments against this distinction, showing how the problems the distinction addresses can be dealt with in other ways. -

Constraints on an external reality under the simulation hypothesis Max Hodak (Originally: 9 May 2020, Last Revised: 14 November 2020) Abstract Whether or not we are living in a simulation has become the subject of much lighthearted conjecture. Despite it being often considered an unfalsifiable question, here I present an argument that places strong contraints on the nature of any universe that contains ours as a \simulation," and I argue that these constraints are so strict that the most likely conclusion is that we are not living in a simulation. The crux of the idea is that almost any external world-simulation interface allows for Lorentz violations, and that these cannot be remedied in a simulation that implements quantum mechanics as we observe it. A Critical Engagement of Bostrom’s Computer Simulation Hypothesis Norman K. Swazo, Ph.D., M.H.S.A. Professor of Philosophy and Director of Undergraduate Studies North South University Plot 15, Block B, Bashundhara R/A Dhaka 1229, Bangladesh Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract In 2003, philosopher Nick Bostrom presented the provocative idea that we are now living in a computer simulation. Although his argument is structured to include a “hypothesis,” it is unclear that his proposition can be accounted as a properly scientific hypothesis. Here Bostrom’s argument is engaged critically by accounting for philosophical and scientific positions that have implications for Bostrom’s principal thesis. These include discussions from Heidegger, Einstein, Heisenberg, Feynman, and Dreyfus that relate to modelling of structures of thinking and computation. In consequence of this accounting, given that there seems to be no reasonably admissible evidence to count for the task of falsification, one concludes that the computer simulation argument’s hypothesis is only speculative and not scientific. Introduction In a paper published in 2003, Nick Bostrom argued that at least one of several propositions is likely to be true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage, i.e., (fp≈0); (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof), i.e., (fI≈0); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation, i.e., (fsim≈1). (Bostrom 2003) Proposition (3) is characterized as the simulation hypothesis, thus only a part of Bostrom’s simulation argument. -

The Problem of Distributed Consensus: A Survey Stephen Wolfram* A survey is given of approaches to the problem of distributed consensus, focusing particularly on methods based on cellular automata and related systems. A variety of new results are given, as well as a history of the field and an extensive bibliography. Distributed consensus is of current relevance in a new generation of blockchain-related systems. In preparation for a conference entitled “Distributed Consensus with Cellular Automata and Related Systems” that we’re organizing with NKN (= “New Kind of Network”) I decided to explore the problem of distributed consensus using methods from A New Kind of Science (yes, NKN “rhymes” with NKS) as well as from the Wolfram Physics Project. A Simple Example Consider a collection of “nodes”, each one of two possible colors. We want to determine the majority or “consensus” color of the nodes, i.e. which color is the more common among the nodes. But it’s potentially much more efficient if we can use a distributed algorithm, where we’re running computations in parallel across the various nodes. One possible algorithm works as follows. First connect each node to some number of neighbors. For now, we’ll just pick the neighbors according to the spatial layout of the nodes: The algorithm works in a sequence of steps, at each step updating the color of each node to be whatever the “majority color” of its neighbors is. -

The mathematics developed specifically for this purpose makes it possible to look behind the scenes of the apparent stage of all events - or better yet: to shed light on the very foundation of reality. What sounds like black magic, is actually incredibly hard physics. Were Albert Einstein alive today, it would have given him great pleasure. For the goal is to fulfil the big dream of a unified theory of gravity and the quantum world. With the new branch of science of quantum geometry, also called loop quantum gravity, Ashtekar has come close to fulfilling this dream - and tries thereby, in addition, to answer the ultimate questions of physics: the mysteries of the big bang and black holes. "On the Planck scale there is a precise, rich, and discrete structure,” says Ashtekar, professor of physics and Director of the Center for Gravitational Physics and Geometry at Pennsylvania State University. The Planck scale is the smallest possible length scale with units of the order of 10-33 centimeters. That is 20 orders of magnitude smaller than what the world’s best particle accelerators can detect. At this scale, Einstein’s theory of general relativity fails. Its subject is the connection between space, time, matter and energy. But on the Planck scale it gives unreasonable values - absurd infinities and singularities. -
