  • Roger Thompson Weighed His Options and Chose York9
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Sun Sep 26 12:57:51 2021 / +0000 GMT Roger Thompson weighed his options and chose York9 Roger Thompson has signed a multi-year extension with the Nine Stripes, a decision he said was family-based. ?There were a lot of things to look at when it comes to my family and financially,? Thompson said. ?The best decision was to stay here long term and be here with my family. Also, I did leave Sweden to come back in front of my family for my dad and my friends to be able to come and watch me play. I missed that being in Europe.? The Canadian-Jamaican international spent a few years in Sweden playing for Trelleborgs FF and Ljungskile SK before securing a contract with York9 FC for the Canadian Premier League inaugural season. ?My last two years there, I became one of the key guys on the team. You learn a lot there as well and take responsibility for certain things. I think it helped me grow a lot and become a better player in the process.? The 28-year-old missed the entirety of the 2019 Canadian Premier League campaign due to injury and the most important factor heading into this past summer's Island Games was remaining fit. Moving into the project for next season, Thompson says he is excited to be under the tutelage of Jimmy Brennan and Paul Stalteri as well as the ?young project? from Managing Consultant Angus McNab. ?He (McNab) wanted to rebuild the club and go young and help the young boys to get better.

  • York9 FC Preps for Historic First Meeting with MLS Squad
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Tue Sep 28 14:12:33 2021 / +0000 GMT York9 FC preps for historic first meeting with MLS squad By Jake Courtepatte The milestones just keep coming in the short history of the York9 FC: yet none have been greater than the challenge that awaits the club on Wednesday night at York Lions Stadium. For the first time in franchise history, the Canadian Premier League club kicks off against a Major League Soccer foe, in an attempt to slay the giant that is the Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship ladder. ?It's been a heck of a ride,? said York9 FC midfielder Ryan Telfer. The York Region club got through both Quebec's A.S. Blainsville and Edmonton FC to reach the third round of the Canadian Championship tournament, the first round to feature MLS clubs, including the Impact who earned a bye on the ladder. A surprise win against the Montreal club could set up a date with the powerhouse Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in the penultimate round. ?Finally, to have a CPL team playing against an MLS team, for me and the rest of the guys we're very excited,? said Telfer. ?To be able to display our talents and see how we match up against an MLS team.? The historic meeting will be the second major milestone the York squad will have set in the inaugural season of the CPL: apart from being the first CPL team to take on an MLS opponent, York also kicked off the first-ever league game against Hamilton's Forge FC in May.

Held at the University of Prince Edward Island's (UPEI) artificial turf field in Charlottetown, its 35-match tournament began on August 13between Forge FC and Cavalry FC. Already dubbed a unique tournament by York9 FC head coach Jimmy Brennan, the League's presser prior to the first official kick-off informed fans, players and media of a creative beginning to the games. ?The Mi'Kmaq Community blessed land for the commencement of the Canadian Premier League Island Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Blessing and Ceremony were performed by the first Mi'Kmaq Poet Laureate of PEI, Julie Pellissier Lush and The Mi'Kmaq Heritage Actors, a group established in 2011 and made up of Indigenous youth,? said the League. They also mentioned that every team will honour Black Lives Matter before every match, making a statement at the centre of the pitch, where Black Lives Matter is written. Forge and Cavalry tied their match 2-2 on the Friday and it was time for the Nine Stripes head coach Jimmy Brennan to address the media before his club's heavy-weight tilt last Saturday against newcomers to the league; Atletico Ottawa. Brennan said everyone is in the same boat. Fitness levels are as good as they can be, but it will all be about making the right adjustments at the right time and bringing in the right guys off of the bench.
