A Producer's Handbook
DEVELOPMENT AND OTHER CHALLENGES A PRODUCER’S HANDBOOK by Kathy Avrich-Johnson Edited by Daphne Park Rehdner Summer 2002 Introduction and Disclaimer This handbook addresses business issues and considerations related to certain aspects of the production process, namely development and the acquisition of rights, producer relationships and low budget production. There is no neat title that encompasses these topics but what ties them together is that they are all areas that present particular challenges to emerging producers. In the course of researching this book, the issues that came up repeatedly are those that arise at the earlier stages of the production process or at the earlier stages of the producer’s career. If not properly addressed these will be certain to bite you in the end. There is more discussion of various considerations than in Canadian Production Finance: A Producer’s Handbook due to the nature of the topics. I have sought not to replicate any of the material covered in that book. What I have sought to provide is practical guidance through some tricky territory. There are often as many different agreements and approaches to many of the topics discussed as there are producers and no two productions are the same. The content of this handbook is designed for informational purposes only. It is by no means a comprehensive statement of available options, information, resources or alternatives related to Canadian development and production. The content does not purport to provide legal or accounting advice and must not be construed as doing so. The information contained in this handbook is not intended to substitute for informed, specific professional advice. -

The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Introduction
Introduction It was the first week of 1980. Twelve months before, the University of Colorado Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program (ITP) had suspended me for letting my grade point average drop below a 3.0. The ITP had admitted me with a provision that my grade point aver- age not fall below a 3.0. If not for a 750 score on the Graduate Record Exam and solid references from my sales manager, some of my previ- ous customers, and the training manager of Belden Corporation, the electronic cable manufacturing company that employed me, my appli- cation in 1977 to enter graduate school in the ITP probably wouldn’t even have been accepted. I’d previously been a factory sales representative for Belden in New York City in the 1970s. My sales territory predominantly served the national headquarters offices of broadcasters ABC, NBC, and CBS, the national headquarters offices of cable television industry multi- ple system operators (MSOs) Teleprompter Corporation and Warner Cable Corporation, and the two local cable television systems on xxix xxx INTrodUCTION Manhattan Island, Manhattan Cable Company (owned by Time Life Corporation) and Teleprompter Manhattan Corporation (owned by Teleprompter Corporation). In November 1975, I originated and arranged a meeting between Belden’s Vice President of Marketing, Jack McCarthy, and the President of Teleprompter Corporation’s Cable-TV Division, William Bresnan, to discuss a partnership to deploy light-wave technology via fiber-optic glass strands in cable television. On July 9, 1976, the New York Times reported, “TV Begins to Use Fiber Technology,”1 and the Wall Street Journal reported, “Tele- prompter Adds Light-Wave System to Cable-TV Unit.”2 The cable television industry obtained rights to pole attachment in public right- of-way from the FCC in 1978.3 After a summer session and the fall term in 1978 my grade point average slipped below a 3.0 due to a statistics class. -

Aldo Tambellini
Aldo Tambellini 11 March - 6 August 2017 A Portrait of Aldo Tambellini, 2010 • Photo: Gerard Malanga Introduction As a key figure in the 1960s underground scene of New York – a missing link between the European avant-garde and the artistic move- ments that followed Abstract Expressionism – Aldo Tambellini (born 1930 in Syracuse, NY, US) is an experimenter, agitator, and a major catalyst of in- novation in the field of multimedia art. Tambellini took the transformational potential of artistic expression that stems from painting and sculpture and brought it to the experiences of Expanded Cinema. After his early experiments with color in the 1950s, the artist em- braced BLACK as an artistic, philosophical, social, and political commit- ment, and started to use mainly this color in his works. The American Civ- il Rights Movement and the struggle for racial equality, the Vietnam War, and the space-age were influences on his visionary oeuvre, unique in that it demonstrates the fragile balance between an artist’s absorption of the stimuli provided by contemporary new technologies and the social and po- litical environment of his time. Attracted above all by the energetic nature of painting, Tambellini transferred a meticulous expression of the language and power of gesture – first onto slides, and later onto film frames and vid- eo. Over the course of the 1960s he created his Black Project from which emerged: the Black Film Series, 16 mm films focused on philosophical and social facets of black; the Black Performances, multimedia performances he called “Electromedia” which are based on his theories of the integration of the arts; the Black Video Series and Black TV, which took his mode of ex- perimentation further into video and television technologies. -
