ABSTRACT The influence of the pre-Civil War Southwestern humorists on the work of William Faulkner has long been hypothesized. But it has received scant critical attention, much of it erroneous or so general as to be almost meaningless. While Faulkner's total vision is more than merely humorous, humor is a significant part of that vision. And the importance of frontier humor to Faulkner's art is further substantiated by the fact that many of his grotesque passages derive from ele• ments of this humor. Frontier humor flourished from I83O to I860, and while a large group of men then flooded American newspapers with contributions, it now survives in anthologies and the book- length collections of its most prominent writers — Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, Joseph Glover Baldwin, Johnson Jones Hooper, William Tappan Thompson, Thomas Bangs Thorpe, and George Washington Harris. -

DWS 2017 Summer Reading for Rising 5th Grade The Library Committee and Class Teachers are pleased to present the DWS 2017 Summer Reading for students in rising 2nd through 8th grades. Summer is a wonderful time to spread out a blanket and read with your child. The English language has by far the largest vocabulary and most complex code (rules) of any other language. It also has a unique ability to absorb words from other languages. All of this makes English the preferred language of poets and playwrights because subtle shades of meaning can be expressed. Vocabulary becomes essential for proficient reading in this wonderfully complex language. Vocabulary acquisition is best obtained through reading. So... relax, sip a lemonade and READ! Things you can Do: 1. Pick a book! You can use the enclosed suggested book list for some ideas. 2. Read 500 Pages! Write down each book on the log page. 3. Rate it! Did you “Like it,” “Love it”? Would you give it a 10+ or 3 stars, maybe 5 hearts? Would you share or not share? 4. Design a new cover for your favorite book. 5. Write a review on the enclosed index cards. Be sure to include your name, grade and the title of the book. We’ll use these in the library. 6. Make a bookmark. Draw a scene from your favorite story, a favorite character or the joys of reading. 7. Have fun! Rickels, Milton Henry (1920-1997) and Patricia Kennedy (1927-2009)
1 Collection 307 Rickels, Milton Henry (1920-1997) and Patricia Kennedy (1927-2009). Papers, 1950-2007, n.d. 32 feet Milton Henry Rickels was born in 1920, in Terra Bella, California, the son of Henry H. Rickels and the former Elsie Inez Land. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Fresno State College, his master’s degree from Claremont University College, and in 1953 received a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. In 1957, Dr. Rickels joined the faculty at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) as associate professor of English. He was a dedicated scholar and teacher. Dr. Milton taught classes in world literature, American humor, American realism, Mark Twain, comparative literature and American poetry. He retired in 1986 and died in 1997. Patricia Kennedy Rickels was born in 1927 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and grew up in Montana, Alaska, and the Panama Canal Zone. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1948 and received her master’s and doctoral degrees from LSU in 1951 and 1961 respectively. She taught in the military program in the Panama Canal Zone from 1949 to 1952, and did post-doctoral work on Negro literature and culture at Southern University during the summers of 1968 and 1969. Dr. Rickels came to SLI in 1957 as instructor of English. She was a faculty member and administrator for 50 years, and was the director of the Honors Program for 28 years. Her academic interests included American folklore and African American literature. She retired in 2007 and died in 2009. -

English Department Course Bulletin Fall 2017 and Summer 2017 Note to Majors: We are delighted by your interest in our upper level classes, and we look forward to studying and working together. One word of advice: Upper level classes are challenging, with strong reading and writing requirements. Please ask yourself how many upper level classes you can really take well in one semester, without throwing the course reading overboard or writing hastily and regrettably. The department, in general, recommends no more than two upper level English courses in a given semester. Also, we have observed in past semesters the custom of students registering for a number of upper level classes, only to drop them at some point “later” in the process. This practice can clog up registration and create enrollment headaches for your peers and our waitlists. As Hamlet counsels, “Pray you, avoid it.” In any event, we wish you the best on your intellectual growth, and we look forward to sharing our love of great literature with you. Students interested in a great humanities elective are welcome as well. Note to Future Majors: We are happy that you are interested in the English major, and we welcome you to join our community of teachers, thinkers, and writers. If you choose to major in English, please be sure to declare your major with the Registrar and transition to a major advisor in the English department. If you have any questions about the English major, feel free to make an appointment with the department chair. For those starting out on the English major, the best course of action is to make your way through the 300s (the core of our major) to the 400s (our seminars), with good and deliberate order and planning. -

When both of her parents die in a cholera epidemic, Mary is escorted by Mrs. Crawford and Kanchi to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, at his estate called Misselthwaite Manor. Mrs. Medlock, the head housekeeper, makes it clear that Mary should not snoop around the house, and that she is to behave and stay out of the way. Lonely, moody and contrary, Mary adapts slowly to her new surroundings. Housemaids Martha, Betty, and Jane suggest Mary explore the garden with their brother Dickon, the gardener’s assistant. Dickon and his mother, Mrs. Sowerby, explain to Mary that after Archibald’s wife died in an accident in one of the gardens, he locked up the garden, buried the key, and has kept to himself ever since. Over the weeks, Mary thinks she hears crying in the house at night, but no one will speak about it. One night, Mary can’t resist following the sound and discovers a boy her age in one of the rooms. Colin Craven is Archibald’s son, an invalid who never leaves his room. Mary tries to talk with him, but is forced out by Colin’s nurse and by Dr. Craven, Archibald’s cousin. Mary grows closer with Colin and the Sowerbys, and begins to discover what it means to be part of a family. -

CULTURAL POLARITIES IN FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT’S CHILDREN’S BOOKS Andries Wessels Department of English University of Pretoria Pretoria, South Africa [email protected] ABSTRACT Frances Hodgson Burnett was the product of two cultures, British and American. An interest in the relations between these two cultures pervades her work and forms a significant thematic thread. This article investigates the articulation of such tensions in Burnett’s three most famous children’s books. The cultural polarities at issue in Little Lord Fauntleroy ([1886] 1899), the earliest of the three novels under consideration, are closest to the tensions in Burnett’s own life as a British American. In this novel, Burnett manages to reconcile the American egalitarianism of the protagonist’s early childhood values with an almost feudal concept of noblesse oblige, and it is suggested that this conceptualisation remains imperative also in her later works. In A little princess ([1905] 2008) and The secret garden ([1911] 1968), imperial India is set against England as the primary polarity. It is suggested that in spite of an ostensible classlessness, the novels express a profoundly conservative and hierarchical vision.
