Remembrance Day

Flying Free There is a place I call my own Where I can stand by the sea And look beyond the things I've known And dream that I might be free Like a bird above the trees Gliding gently on the breeze I wish that all my life I'd be without a care and flying free But life is not a distant sky Without a cloud without rain And I can never hope that I can travel on Traffic in The Street was halted while names were read from without pain the war memorial and the two minutes silence was observed. Time goes swiftly on its way All too soon we've lost today I can not wait for skies of blue Or dream so long that life is through So life's a song that I must sing A gift of love I must share And when I see the joy it brings My spirits soar to the air Like the bird up in the sky Life has taught me how to fly The large crowd then turned to face Choir as And now I know what I can be they sang ‘Flying Free’. And now my heart is flying free Lyrics by Don Besig The Parish Council are setting up a petition to support stronger measures against speeding on Sheering Lower Road and The Street. Expansion proposals announced by UK 10 A Traditional Cup of Tea – Goodbye

Goodbye to our milk in its bottle of glass. Goodbye to the tea-leaves for tea. It’s supermar’t plastic and thin paper bags. That tradition is now history.

We don’t hear the question that used to be posed, “The milk first or after my dear?” Just drop in the tea bag and squeeze once or twice and watch the brown colour appear.

No more reading tea-leaves at base of the cup to see what the future might show, or feeding the plants with the residue bits in order to help them to grow.

Yet still in some houses with rose-tinted glass the old order runs as before. In Ritz and Savoy the tea strainer remains, and, “Would Modom like to take more?”

So though the old milkman no longer treads paths, and tea-leaves don’t clog up the drains, there are still some teapots where tea stands to brew. A thread of tradition remains.

Quickbury Class at Sheering School studied the poem ‘Silver’ by Walter de La Mare, first published In a book of children’s rhymes titled Peacock Pie , in 1913. The class then composed their own poetry entitled ‘Gold’ using the same structure.

Silver

Slowly, silently, now the moon Lily Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep; A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws and a silver eye; And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream. Friends of St Mary’s Sheering Quiz on 21 September There were eight tables for our quiz, and as usual there was fierce but good-natured competition. Eventually it came down to a tie between Sheering WI and the Carpetbaggers, and the tie break question gave it to the Carpetbaggers. It was a new experience to have the questions set by Ros Rowe instead of John Smith - but not a complete break because John’s two trusty helpers, Al and Ali, joined us to support Ros, along with Ros’s husband (another John!). We all had a fun evening, and after expenses we made £289.20 for Friends funds. (Ros and her team and the winning team “The Carpetbaggers”) News of the buildings and grounds The clock We are grateful to everyone whose generous gifts have made it possible to repair and refurbish Sheering’s war memorial tower clock. At the time of writing (early November) the renovation of the two faces is almost complete, and the broken strike mechanism is on the clockmaker’s bench. The scaffolding is in place ready for the reinstallation. By the time you read this, Sheering residents should have been able to hear the clock striking again. We have yet to confirm a date for a rededication service, but it is likely to be linked to the VE Day celebrations in early May 2020. (Look no hands, Look no clock) Exploring the Tower Most people do not venture to climb the stairs behind one of the two rare single- plank doors on the ground floor of the tower. The steps are made out of ancient roughly-cut quarter-logs leading, via what used to be an unguarded drop, to the first floor where the strike mechanism of the clock is located. Now, thanks to the recent generosity of a member of the community, there is a reassuring safety rail. A further two ladders (one at 45 degrees and the other vertical) eventually lead to a tiny trapdoor to access the roof. Not for the faint-hearted…! (Entrance to the tower stairs, before the safety rail, with the safety rail) Update on the Churchyard Extension There was a good turn-out on 31 August to look at the PCC’s then-current thoughts for extending the churchyard. Two further options were suggested for the location of the extension and the PCC is looking into them. Broken tiles ––– church and church room One of the many features of our beautiful Grade-One-listed building is the ancient hand-made red clay tiles on the rooves of the chancel and the vestry. Recently we had to replace eight of them, due to normal wear and tear. At the same time we replaced about half a dozen of the modern mass-produced tiles on the church room and a length of the guttering, some of the damage probably caused by vandalism. Fortunately Friends funds were in hand to bear the cost of almost £600.

Recent church events The church was beautifully decorated for Harvest weekend (21/22 September). On the Saturday there were stalls and teas in the church room. In church there was live music all afternoon, 19 along with a chance to try ringing the church bells, do a teddy-bear hunt and have a go at Dirty Carpets playing hand-bells. After the harvest service in church on the Sunday, the gifts of non- & Upholstery? perishable food were sent to Harlow
