Part II: Agroclimatic Zonewise Agricultural/Agro meteorological Advisories Northern Hill Zone MAJOR STAGE PEST & ADVISORY CROPS DISEASES General As per NOAA/VIRS/BLENDED NDVI composite ending on week no.17 (23.04.2021 to 29.04.2021) over agricultural region of Darjeeling & Kalimpong district, the agricultural vigor is moderate and as per the SPI for the period 01st April to 28th April, 2021 the region was mildly dry. In upcoming five days total rainfall of 74.0 mm is predicted for the regions of Darjeeling district and 63.0 mm for Kalimpong district regions.Irrigation, fertilizer application and spraying of agricultural chemicals should be withheld during rainfall.     DISTRICT DISASTER MANAGEMENT PLAN-2019,KALIMPONG 1 FOREWORD It is a well-known fact that we all are living in a world where occurrence of disasters whether anthropological or natural are increasing year by year in terms of both magnitude and frequency. Many of the disasters can be attributed to man. We, human beings, strive to make our world comfortable and convenient for ourselves which we give a name ‘development’. However, in the process of development we take more from what Nature can offer and in turn we get more than what we had bargained for. Climate change, as the experts have said, is going to be one major harbinger of tumult to our world. Yet the reason for global warming which is the main cause of climate change is due to anthropological actions. Climate change will lead to major change in weather pattern around us and that mostly will not be good for all of us. And Kalimpong as a hilly district, as nestled in the lap of the hills as it may be, has its shares of disasters almost every year. Monsoon brings landslide and misery to many people. Landslides kill or maim people, kill cattle, destroy houses, destroy crops, sweep away road benches cutting of connectivity and in the interiors rivulets swell making it difficult for people particularly the students to come to school. Hailstorm sometimes destroys standing crops like cardamom resulting in huge loss of revenue. Almost every year lightning kills people. And in terms of earthquake the whole district falls in seismic zone IV. Therefore, Kalimpong district is a multi-hazard prone district and the District Disaster Management Plan is prepared accordingly.

ABSTRACT The Checklist of Mammalian fauna of West Bengal has been updated after more than two and half decades to include recent taxonomic changes, new additions and distribution records for West Bengal. In this checklist, 234 species (Extant 211, Extinct 23) and 215 sub-species, belonging to 137 genera, 39 families and 11 orders, are reported. The chiropterans represent maximum number of species (75) followed by rodents (50), carnivores (48), Artiodactyls (29), Eulipotyphla (11), Primates (8), Lagomorpha (5), Perissodactyla (3), Pholidota (2) Scandentia (2) and Proboscidea (1). Relative to the 1992 version, the gain in number of species is 46 (+24.46%), that of sub-species 70 (+48.27%), genera 31 (+29.24%) and families 7 (+21.87%). Following recent molecular evidences, Cetacea is reordered under Artiodactyla in the new version. There are, however, a few records that remain unresolved, doubtful or controversial. Landslide Susceptibility Zonation (LSZ) Map is required to prevent landslide as well as the socio- economical losses of the hilly region. The availability of various Remote Sensing (RS) data and the advancement of the Geographic Information System (GIS) help to prepare the LHZ map. The integration of RS data and GIS application is adopted to generate the LHZ map of Darjeeling, India. Landsat 8, Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Data Elevation Model (DEM), and different Information maps are used to prepare six thematic layers for LHZ such as Slope, Drainage Density, Lineament, Geology, Land use & Land Cover, Soil. Thematic layers were assigned appropriate Numerical values as the weight for every factor and sub-factor in the GIS environment. The LHZ maps were produced by the weighted overlay technique. Resulted from it gives the LHZ map of the Darjeeling area.
