RIA The Royal Irish Academy–Royal Society International Exchange Cost Share Programme

The scheme provides funding for collaborative research in the natural sciences between two teams of Irish and UK scientists working on a single project. It is jointly supported by the Royal Society and provides marginal costs to facilitate bilateral visits between Ireland and the UK.

The opening date for all RIA grant schemes is typically early autumn and awarded grants are tenable from the following calendar year.

Archaeology Grants Archaeology Research Excavation Grants

This scheme provides large-scale grants for archaeological excavation and post-excavation research. The fund is provided by the National Monuments Service and is administered through the RIA Standing Committee for Archaeology.

The call for archaeology excavation grants typically opens in late autumn.

Archaeology Research Grants and C14 Grants Scheme

The Academy also awards a number of grants for research in Irish archaeology, excluding excavation. The Academy, in association with Queen’s University, Belfast, also offers radiocarbon dating services to be used for the purposes of archaeological research in Ireland under the C14 grants scheme.

Occasional Bursaries and Awards Eoin O’Mahony Bursary in Irish History

This bursary fund, established in memory of the genealogist and newspaper columnist Eoin (‘Pope’) O’Mahony, provides support for candidates engaged in historical research on subjects of Irish interest.

Praeger Fund for Field Research in Natural History

The Praeger Fund, in honour of the geologist and botanist Robert Lloyd Praeger, provides support for field-work relevant to the natural history of Ireland.
