There is no single, consistent pattern of deprivation and disadvantage across the County although wage levels are persistently low as is the gaining of qualifications. Most of Derry’s GAA communities are not affluent but have a strong tradition of investing strongly in the GAA.

What This Means for Derry GAA

Derry GAA’s planning has to continue to be needs-driven and the County also has to remain focussed in its fund-raising and wise in the management of its resources. GAA capital projects make a huge economic contribution (alone conservatively worth £2m-plus year-on-year to the Derry economy) whilst no other organisation contributes as much to local social and cultural capital. In both of these areas the GAA can do much to address the particular problems experienced by Derry city.
