Rainy days and nights in Georgia may lead to more mold It has amazed me at the number of calls we’ve re- cently received here at the extension office about mold! In my new role as family and consumer sciences agent, a big part of my job is to search for answers to people’s questions. I keep telling people, “I’m still learn- ing!” And I have to say, I’ve learned By Becky more about Collins mold in the last few Extension Agent months than about anything else! Heavy rains and high hu- midity levels for extended pe- riods of time can produce an explosion of mold. And South Georgia has had its share of both! Molds produce spores that spread through the air and form new mold growths or colonies when the condi- tions are right. “Mold is all around us,” says University of Georgia Cooperative Extension expert Pamela Turner. “It can grow on any organic material, as long as there is moisture and oxygen present.” Mold not only damages your property; it can also im- pact your health. New mold colonies can form in as little as three days, so you need to act quickly. Generally, you do not need to test mold. It is better to spend your money and effort on cleaning it up. If you have health concerns or mold has spread throughout your home, consider hiring a rep- utable firm that is trained in dealing with water damage and mold remediation. There are no licensing require- ments in Georgia, so shop carefully, obtain written quotes and do not pay in ad- vance for the work. If you need to or choose to clean up on your own, follow the EPA guidelines below for safe removal of mold: 1. Wear protective gear during cleanup. Reduce skin exposure by wearing gloves, long sleeves, long pants and sturdy shoes. To avoid K COLLINS, 2B See Page Quantity is key to spending time with your children
