NEWS RELEASE Formula 5000 Featured at Infineon Raceway CSRG Charity Challenge Races For 5th Round of Championship Series Rochester Hills, MI – (9/13/2010) – The Formula 5000 Drivers Association is Officers & Directors pleased to announce that a field of about 20 historic Formula 5000 cars will Seb Coppola be competing in the CSRG Charity Challenge at Infineon Raceway on President October 1-2, 2010. Eric Haga also returns to racing Michael Brayton reunited with his 1970 Lola T190 which he raced in 1970 and 1971 in the Bobby Brown original SCCA Continental Series. Warwick Brown Jim Dittemore Other makes include Crossle’, Gurney Eagle, Leda, Lola, Lotus, March, Steve Durst McLaren, McRae and Shadow spanning production years from 1969 to 1976. Ron Dykes The field of drivers comes from various areas of North America from places Bruce Eglinton such as: Canada, California, Illinois, Michigan, New York and Washington. Jerry Entin Howie Fairbanks Drivers will compete for trophies for top place finishes in their Class. Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

The Ex - Piers Courage, John Coombs 1967 McLaren M4A Chassis Number: M4A/2 • One of two works cars run by McLaren in 1967 for the European Formula 2 season, long before customer M4As became available. Owned by John Coombs and driven by Piers Courage while he was also a works BRM Formula 1 driver, scoring 2nd place at Zandvoort and 3rd at Hockenheim. • Bought by Courage in time for the 1968 Tasman Series, where he scored a phenomenal victory by a huge margin in the final round, beating the likes of Jim Clark in a Lotus 49. Courage also took a 2nd and three 3rds to finish 3rd in the series. • Sold to Australia at the conclusion of the Tasman Series in 1968 and raced successfully there by subsequent owners before returning to Europe in 1991. • Recently maintained by Speedsport, with Michael O’Brien taking victory at Cadwell Park in HSCC Classic Racing Cars. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1.
