I like it to play football by myself, to watch it on television, but also to read articles about football. The opportunity to combine my love for football with a scientific research for my Bachelor Thesis, could not be better for me. During an orientating conversation about the topic for my Bachelor Thesis with my thesis mentor Jos Bijman, I mentioned that I was always interested in the management strategies of organizations. What kind of choices an organization makes, what kind of resources an organization uses, what an organization wants to achieve and its performances. Following closely this process in large organizations is something I like to do in my leisure time. My thesis mentor Jos Bijman asked for my hobbies and he mentioned that there was a possibility to combine my interests in the management strategies of organizations with my main hobby football. In this way the topic Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie was created. The Bachelor Thesis Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie is executed in a qualitative research, using a literature study. This Thesis is written in the context of my graduation of the study Business-and Consumer Studies (specialization Business) at the Wageningen University and Research. R. KABIR 2nd SUPERVISOR: dr. X. HUANG September 2015 MANAGEMENT SUMMARY Bankruptcy and financial distress are chronicle problems for the Dutch professional football industry. Since the establishment of Dutch’s professional football in 1954 nine clubs have been declared bankrupt (four since 2010) and many others were facing financial distress last few years. Club failure identification and early warnings of impending financial crisis could be very important for the Dutch football association in order to maintain a sound industry and to prevent competition disorder. As financial ratios are key indicators of a business performance, different bankruptcy prediction models have been developed to forecast the likelihood of bankruptcy. Because bankruptcy prediction models are based on specific industries, samples and periods it remains a challenge to predict with a high accuracy rate in other settings. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the accuracy rate of bankruptcy prediction models to an industry and period outside those of the original studies namely, the Dutch professional football industry. The study draws on the information from financial statements (e.g. annual report and season reports) as publicly provided by the Dutch professional football clubs since 2010. The accuracy rate of three best suitable (i.e. commonly used and applicable to the Dutch football industry) accounting-based bankruptcy prediction models of Ohlson (1980), Zmijewski (1984), and Altman (2000) were tested on Dutch professional football clubs between the seasons of 2009/2010 - 2013/2014.

    From being a small boy, I have always been a huge fan of both football and professional wrestling and at around the age of 10-years-old, I came across a monthly magazine brought to newsagents from the makers of the world famous Sports Illustrated all about pro wrestling. It was simply named Pro Wrestling Illustrated. It was a publication I regularly read as well as Shoot and Match weekly magazines to feed my football addiction. In 1991, PWI began this new craze that instantly grabbed my attention more than no other magazine had before. They revealed the 'PWI 500'. The 'PWI 500' section in the magazine listed (in rank order) the top 500 professional wrestlers in the world that year. Counting down from 500, this revealed to me many, many talents that I have not discovered as of yet. This was released every year, and still to this day is the best selling edition of the magazine each year. I studied and read and read over and over again that edition in 1991 and I came up with an idea. What if Match or Shoot revealed the top 500 footballers in the world? Thinking back to 1991, I used to love to tune into the 'BBC Radio 1 Top 40' show every Sunday afternoon too... maybe I'm a tad obsessed with countdowns. Anyways, reflecting on the idea, I thought about it each year the 'PWI 500' was released. As years went on, I felt that this would have grown into a hugely successful plan, gaining great recognition with people in the game, possibly gained its own award ceremony on TV with the emergence and exposure SKY Television in the United Kingdom was just beginning to give to the game back then.

Voor deze mannen is de wedstrijd namelijk vaak van ondergeschikt belang. Het is hen een zorg wie er met de drie punten naar huis gaat. Dat blijkt ook maar weer in Apeldoorn. Terwijl AGOVV en Stroe bezig zijn met een heus spektakelstuk voelt het alsof er op de tribunes een reünie aan de gang is. Verhalen worden uitgewisseld waarbij hun hobby 'groundhopping' de rode draad vormt. En dus passeren namen als Barnsley, Accrington Stanley en het Liechtensteinse FC Vaduz de revue. Want deze mannen zijn voetballiefhebbers. Al lijkt 'voetbalromantici' een beter woord. Kilometervreters Ze dromen namelijk weg bij de vervallen hoofdtribune van AGOVV.

Hij ging op vijfj arige leeft ijd voetballen bij voetbalvereniging H&K, in de voormalige Gelderse gemeente Hummelo en Keppel. Zijn vader Dirk-Jan was daar trainer en ook zijn oudere broer Niek voetbal- de er. Klaas-Jan werd ingedeeld in jeugdteams waar hij op basis van zijn leeft ijd te jong voor was, maar op basis van zijn talent meer tot zijn recht kwam. Op tienjarige leeft ijd werd hij gescout door De Graafschap en ging in Doetinchem bij de jeugd voetbal- len. In 2000 maakte hij de overstap naar de jeugdopleiding van PSV. Hij werd ondergebracht in een gastgezin en kreeg op het trainingscomplex De Herdgang onder andere training van Willy van der Kuijlen, met 311 doelpunten nog altijd de topscorer aller tijden van de Eredivisie. Previous studies found evidence that this led to financial distressed situations. To improve the financial position of European football clubs, the UEFA implemented Financial Fair Play regulations in 2011. This study investigated for 11 Dutch professional football clubs the impact of: (1) player expenditures on financial distress, (2) Financial Fair Play on financial distress, (3) Financial Fair Play on the relation between player expenditures and financial distress.
