McEnroe, Leconte et Muster ont déjà confirmé leur venue, c’est aujourd’hui au tour de l’ancien numéro 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero et Xavier Malisse d’annoncer leur présence à l’Optima Open 2016. Les stars du tennis d’antan s’affronteront durant le week-end de l’Ascension du 13 au 15 août sur le court central du Royal Zoute Tennis Club pour le classement de l’ATP Champions Tour. L’Optima Open 2016 piqué par le “Moustique” espagnol L’Espagnol de 36 ans, Juan Carlos Ferrero, jouera lors de son premier tournoi de l’Optima Open aussi son premier tournoi de l’ATP Champions Tour. Le droitier débuta sa carrière professionnelle en 1998 et atteignit le plus haut niveau en 2002. Il remporta Roland Garros en simple et fut numéro 1 mondial la même année. Son surnom “Mosquito” (le moustique) lui vient de son incroyable jeu de jambes et de sa rapidité. Juan Carlos Ferrero a pris sa « retraite » en 2002, mais reste actif dans le milieu, entre autres, grâce à sa propre école de tennis en Espagne. Voyons si ses adversaires ont encore quelque chose à lui apprendre ! Une troisième victoire pour Xavier Malisse ? Notre compatriote Xavier Malisse (35) sera à nouveau présent cette année. En 2014, il remporta la finale de l’Optima Open contre Fabrice Santoro et l’année dernière contre le grand Pete Sampras. Le public a pu assister à une finale mémorable, la plus excitante jamais jouée à l’Optima Open et durant laquelle un Champions Tie-break décida du sort de Pete Sampras. « X-Man » l’emporta en 13-11. Ce qui n’est pas surprenant lorsque l’on sait que Xavier Malisse fut l’un des joueurs les plus talentueux de sa génération. Durant sa carrière professionnelle, il fit d’ailleurs goûter la poussière à quelques numéros 1 tels que Nadal, Federer et Djokovic. En 2002, il se hissa en demi-finale de Wimbledon et en 2004 il remporta Roland Garros en double avec Olivier Rochus. « Je me sens déjà comme à la maison à l’Optima Open où j’ai autant de plaisir sur le court qu’en dehors. C’est chaque année agréable de revoir mes collègues d’avant et de vivre à nouveau cette adrénaline. J’espère arriver cette année encore en finale. The trio of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer finished in the Top 3 ATP Rankings for the seventh time (2007-11, 2014, 2018), the first since 2014. All three players ranked No. 1 at one stage during the year and it was the first time all three ranked No. 1 during the same season. There were five changes in the year-end Top 10 from the previous season for the second year in a row, including first-timers No. 6 Kevin Anderson and No. 10 John Isner, both former U.S. collegiate standouts.
