Una expedición cartográfica por el Museo Naval, que es el título de esta ponencia. Una expedición en la que el rumbo nos lo va a marcar la his- toria de la cartografía náutica en España. Y para ilustrar nuestro viaje he preparado una pequeña selección de los mapas que se conservan en el Museo Naval y que nos situarán en todas aquellas tierras y mares surcados por la Marina Española. Y como toda ex- pedición, la nuestra tiene un punto de partida y un punto de llegada. En nues- tro caso será el mismo: el Museo Naval de Madrid. Y desde aquí comenza- mos sin más tardar nuestra singladura. -

La raccolta libraria descritta consta di 1219 opere stampate prevalentemente nei secoli XVIII e soprattutto XIX; la maggior parte dei volumi risultano essere appartenuti – come testimoniato da note di possesso e postille manoscritte - ai religiosi che a vario titolo ebbero rapporti con la Parrocchia di Esine fra Settecento e Ottocento. Il fondo ne rispec- chia dunque i diversificati interessi culturali che emblematicamente si intrecciano e si saldano con le fasi salienti dello sviluppo della storia e dell’evoluzione del pensiero. Il pa- trimonio documentario disponibile presso la Biblioteca parrocchiale può così essere oggetto di differenti “chiavi di lettura” a seconda che si soffermi l’attenzione sul contenuto delle pubblicazioni piuttosto che sulle caratteristiche editoriali degli stampati o si intenda in- vece approfondire la ricerca nell’ambito della storia locale. Il catalogo qui pubblicato - curato da Vittorio Volpi - è il risultato del lavoro di catalogazione intrapreso alcuni anni fa, finanziato dal Comune di Esine. Contiene le descrizioni delle opere appartenenti alla Biblioteca parrocchiale nel formato standard ISBD, con intestazioni secondo RICA e riporta con particolare ampiezza e dettaglio le note relative all’esemplare. -

DIANNE MITCHELL The Absent Lady and the Renaissance Lyric as Letter1 In a widely copied poem from the early seventeenth century, a woman’s encounter with poetic mail is imagined in terms of foreplay. “Fly paper kiss those Hands,” the male sender urges his verse, “Whence I am barrd of late / She quickly will vnloose thy bands / O wish mee then thy state” (1- 4).2 Rejecting the metaphorical bands of love in favor of the paper or silk bands sometimes employed by correspondents to secure mail in early modern England, the poet likens his reader’s unfolding of her mail to a pair of lovers’ heated fumbling with one another’s clothing. Denuded, the posted poem is subsequently kissed, fondled, and granted access to private zones such as “her Brest” (28) (the traditional location for storing love letters). “Fly paper” stands out for its erotic frankness. Yet, the conceit that routine habits of receiving, holding, and storing correspondence might facilitate intimate contact between a poem’s sender and its female reader is ubiquitous in English Renaissance lyric. Most familiar, perhaps, is its manifestation in the amorous sonnets of the 1590s, poems whose presentation as “invitations to love issued within a manuscript system of exchange” is bound up with their capacity for bodily surrogacy.3 It is no accident that William Percy refers to the poetic “writs” he sends his mistress as “liuelie patterns” (copies or models) of his “liuelesse” form (1-2), nor that, in a poem “To his absent Diana,” Henry Constable describes the inky letters of his posted sonnets as “black teares” (12).4 The famous opening sonnet of Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti, which deliberately blurs the boundary between “happy leaues” (1) and abject sender, epitomizes these deeply embodied fantasies of textual reception.5 As the lady “handle[s]” (3) or meets with papers that both emerge from and stand in for the poet’s anxiously desiring body, her touch is portrayed as enacting the erotic contact he seeks.6 This essay, however, is not about these imagined scenes of reception. -

A quaint bit of old-time history is here transcribed from Pole's "Collections for Devon:" "Bindon, in Axmouth, was sometime the dwelling of Nicholas Bach, and by him sold in Kinge Henry 4 tyme unto Roger Wike; it contynewed in the famyly, and the last of them, Richard Wike, left it unto his foure daughters, wief of Antony Giffard, Alis (Alice), wief of Hugh Barry, wief of Mark Hays, and Mary, wief of Walter Erie, which bought Giffard's part, and so the moytye (half) is descended unto Sir Walter Earle, sonne of , and Dorothie, his wief, daughter of William Pole, of Shute, Esq. There is a conflict of authorities just here which we are not able to determine. -

Anti-colonialism vs Colonialism in Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko; or, The Royal Slave 1 Prof Said I. The Sunday Telegraph Aphra Behn’s novel [Oroonoko] confronts the ownership of Africa by the British, the ownership of American land by European colonialists, and the ownership of women by men. Laural J. Rosenthal, Renaissance Drama This paper is a study of anti-colonialsim versus colonialism in Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko; or, The Royal Slave (1688). It discusses love and freedom as tools of anti-colonialism versus slavery, as a politico-socio-economic tool of colonialism. Early in the twentieth century, Virginia Woolf, an Eng-lish woman, novelist, and feminist writer of considerable amo-unt of serious literary production, and good reputation, shows a good gesture for Aphra Behn. She remembers Aphra Behn and in a frank declaration, she pays homage to her as a brave woman writer who has been deprived of a veneration she deserves, for a long time. Woolf writes: “Let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn.”2 This statement reflects a celebration of, and an attribute to Aphra Behn as a pioneer woman writer. Though, Behn’s work was immature for woman’s legal rights and social position, it is still true that it represents a social concern and a courageous stand in the history of woman’s literary writing; her writing inspired many literary imitations afterwards. Oroonoko is anti-slavery novel in which Mrs. Behn sets an axample to be followed by other women novelists to write in a new field and to fight against strongly built unjust politico-socio-economic institution. -

Scott Shapiro November 7, 2014 Attached are the first two chapters from a book manuscript that I am writing with my colleague Oona Hathaway, tentatively titled “THE WORST CRIME OF ALL: THE PARIS PEACE PACT AND THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF WAR.” This cover note is meant to help situate the chapters in the broader project. The first part describes what we call the Old World Order—a system that relied on war as the linchpin of law. The first two chapters center on Grotius and the legal order he helped establish. The subsequent chapters of this part show how war was a source of legal redress and legal rights. The legal rights to territory, people, and goods were decided by war—even ones that were entirely unjust. The second part of the book—comprised of four chapters—tells the story of what we argue is a deep shift in the legal meaning of war—the end of the Old World Order and the beginning of something fundamentally new. This shift, we argue, has consequences not just for states’ recourse to war, but for international law and the international system as a whole. The chapter that begins this second part of the book examines the “war to outlaw war”—the global movement to reject the remedial conception of war that characterized the Old World Order. That chapter ends with the signing of the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact (also called the Paris Peace Pact or Briand-Kellogg Pact). The next chapter examines the consequences that flowed from the decision to reject the legal rules that underpinned the Old World Order without first sorting out the legal rules and institutions that would take their place.
