In This Issue A Message from Jenn When I was in high school, working as a counselor at summer camp was the highlight of my year. During the school year, I looked forward to the following summer when I could surround myself with my camp community. I remember my friends and I created an online countdown that would tell us exactly how many months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds until camp started again. I checked this countdown frequently as I counted down the days until another spectacular summer. Many of us count down our days: B'nei ...... 2 Company Matching Gifts ...... 2 Only one hundred more days until my trip! Phased Reopening Plan ...... 2 Only eighty days until school’s out! Anniversaries ...... 3 Only twenty-nine days until I move. Lag B' ...... 3 & 10 What's Nu ...... 3 Of course, being excited about upcoming events and new chapters of life is wonderful. Yom Hazikaron & Yom Haatzmaut .. 3 Looking forward to the future may fill us with hope, joy, and inspiration. But sometimes on the Trails ...... 3 Worship Services ...... 4 when we count down days, we miss out on opportunities for holiness in the present day. We count forty-nine days as we anticipate the celebration of receiving the Torah at Sinai. What’s fascinating about this ritual is that instead of counting down, we count up! In this way, each day is valued—each day builds from the days before. This ritual helps us appreciate time, looking forward to the future while at the same time valuing the present day. There are many ways we may value our time, finding the good in each day. Setting a daily goal may help us remain focused on making each day count. 2 | April 2021 Lag B’Omer Lag B’Omer is a minor, festive holiday that falls on the 33rd day of the seven-week period between Passover and Shavuot, a period of time is known as the Omer. The Omer has both agricultural and spiritual significance: it marks both the spring cycle of planting and harvest, and the Israelites’ journey out of slavery in Egypt (Passover) and toward receiving the Torah at (Shavuot). An omer (“sheaf”) is an ancient Hebrew measure of grain. Biblical law forbade any use of the new crop until after an omer was brought as an offering to the Temple in . The Book of Leviticus (23:15-16) also commanded: “And from the day on which you bring the offering… you shall count off seven weeks. They must be complete.” This commandment led to the practice of the S’firat HaOmer, or the 49 days of the "Counting of the Omer,” which begins on the second day of Passover and ends with the celebration of Shavuot on the 50th day. Lag B”Omer commemorates a variety of historical events, including the end of a plague that killed many students of (c. 50-135 C.E.), the yahrzeit of 2nd-century mystical scholar , and a Jewish military victory over Roman forces in 66 C.E. In remembrance of these events, some people celebrate with picnics and bonfires. For information about our Lag B’Omer celebration, please see the last page of this Shofar. Source: Union for Reform
